19. Unraveling

Last night was definitely the best moment of my life--well, best moment of my afterlife. I remembered Allison waking up this morning with a huge yet sleepy smile on her face, her hair a little messy from her sleep, but she still looked gorgeous as always. A yawn had escaped her mouth before she had remembered that she still had school; and that she slept in.

I had just sat there and laughed as she scrambled out of bed to get ready, running to the bathroom while yelling, "Shut up, Corey!" I guess it was a good thing that her parents weren't home. Actually, I wondered where they went to so early. I had heard them leave earlier, but I didn't really think much about it.

So in a couple of minutes, Allison was soon dressed and ready to go to school. She had somehow managed to touch up her bed head with a few new curls, but either way she looked beautiful. She had also grabbed her bag and yelled at me to come on, or else she would leave me here. I guess you can say I followed after her fast.

But now we were at school, sitting in her grandfathers office. I had followed her inside when he called her down to talk about something, but we weren't sure about what yet. It still baffled me that Gerard was even the school principle, but I guess hunters find a way to get whatever they want. Only I'm unsure why he would want to be school principle anyways.

"So I heard you're studying with a friend later tonight," Gerard says as he sits down at his desk, staring at Allison as if he wanted her to pour out all of the information she knew.

Allison shifts positions in her chair. "Yeah, Lydia and I are for World History. We've got a big exam coming up."

"History was one of my favorites," Gerard says with a brighter tone, rising his eyebrows. "Especially military history. Ever hear the phrase...know thy enemy?"

Allison nods her head as I raise an eyebrow. "It's from The Art of War by Sun Tzu."

"Very good. Know what it means?" Gerard says while lifting his chin, and it appeared to me that he was hinting towards something bigger.

Allison lowers her head. "In order to win a battle, one must know everything they can about their enemy."

"Right again," Gerard says, raising his eyebrows. "Your father and I happen to be having that very problem, actually. We've got an enemy that we know next to nothing. It's killed one of our own."

Allison's jaw tightens. "Oh."

"Did you hear that Jackson Whittemore didn't show up to school today?" Gerard urges farther, causing Allison to glance over at me briefly. It was like she needed help with a reply, but what was I supposed to do?

Allison's hands fall into her lap as she cocks her head slightly. "He didn't?"

"His parents called and said that they called the police," he says as a small smirk dances across his lips. I could tell that he knew something more, and he was playing Allison. "You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"

Allison sounds firm. "No."

Gerard lifts his chin. "Now, let me tell you that I know that a teenagers first reaction is to protect their friends, and I even believe that my own grand-daughter would do anything to protect her friends, even if that meant lying."

"I'm not lying," Allison says, shaking her head. If I wouldn't have actually known, I would have believed her. Instead, Gerard stands up and walks over behind Allison, placing two fingers on her neck.

"I'm going to ask again, but this time, with a small advantage," he says as he presses his fingers harder. I knew then that he was going to feel her pulse to see if it raises, indicating if she was lying or not. "Do you know anything about Jackson being missing?"

"Take a deep breath Allison," I say to her, my voice calm. "You got this."

Allison's eyes are wide as she stares ahead, terrified of the situation she was in. "No."

"Is he in trouble?" Gerard pushes farther.

Allison shakes her head slightly. "I-I don't know."

"Does this have anything to do with Scott?" he asks as well, causing my fists to clench.

She furrows her eyebrows before speaking, taking a deep breath. "No--I mean, I don't know."

"Your pulse jumped," Gerard says with a smile on his face. Allison grunts as she stands up out of the chair, turning and facing her grandfather.

"That's because you're scaring me!" she proclaims, which wasn't exactly a lie.

Gerard's expression changes, but I could still tell that something was off. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I shouldn't have used that tactic on you."

Allison brings her hand to her neck as she stares at her shoes. "Yeah, no kidding."

"You can go back to class," he says as Allison looks up at him before looking over at me. My face is blank as she walks around him and out of the room, myself following her close behind. Allison stops for a moment as she turns and looks over in the corner, and that was when I saw what she was looking at.

There was a man putting up a video camera.

Allison looks over at me as her face goes pale, knowing that Gerard had to be on to them. She glances back at her grand father for a moment before she turns and walks out of the office, scanning all of the cameras in the hallway as she passed them.

"This can't be happening," she whispers under her breath to me.

I look up at the camera as we walk past it. "What does he think he needs to see?"

"Everything," Allison says as her voice fades out, panic already starting to settle into her stomach. She pauses as she reaches the door to her class, not opening it and going inside. She shakes her head before turning around and marching away, myself having to catch up with her.

"Where are you going?" I ask, furrowing my eyebrows.

Her eyes flick up to the video camera before lowering, glancing back ahead. "To warn Stiles."

-------

"What the hell!" Stiles yells as Allison runs up behind him, scaring the living crap out of him. He clutches the phone in his hand as Allison has a determined look on her face, also out of breath from running over here.

"They know," she says, her breathing starting to calm.

Stiles furrows his eyebrows as he leans closer to her. "What?"

"They know Jackson is missing!" she yells this time, her curls bouncing on her shoulders.

Stiles holds up the phone in his hand. "No they can't. I've been texting his parents this whole time-"

"My grand father told me that his parents went to the police. Trust me, they know."

Stiles holds out the phone as he shakes his arm, making some sort of gasping sound. He hands Allison the phone before running back to the white van, opening the door and turning on the radio. We all crowd around the door as we listen closely, hearing someone speak on the other line.

"Everyone report to Beacon Hills preserve and wait for further instruction from Sheriff Stilinksi."

Stiles looks back at Allison, taking the phone back before he runs around to the other side of the van, getting into the drivers seat. Allison glances back at me with wide eyes before she gets in herself, shutting the door and looking over at Stiles.

"Where are we going?" she asks as Stiles dials something on the phone.

He throws the phone out of the window. "Somewhere far away from here."

I hear the phone dial before I realized that I wasn't in the car, and Stiles was already staring to pull away. Allison stares at me with wide eyes before I jump towards the van, knowing that I'd at least go through one side of it. I open my eyes again when I see that I was in the back part of the van, where Jackson was now sitting handcuffed.

"What the hell Stiles!" he yells as Stiles speeds down the road, which was very very bumpy. "I swear to God, I'm going to kill you!"

Well, that's not a good thing to hear from someone who is a Kanima.

Jackson tugs some more on the handcuffs as he screams loudly, clearly irritated with what was happening. I could tell that he must not believe Stiles about him being the Kanima, since he clearly didn't care if he were to get out and hurt someone. This guy really did seem selfish.

It takes awhile before the van stops again, and that was when I finally got out and saw that we were in a different part of the woods. You could see the ocean and a huge cliff, along with a vast expanse of trees. I look over when I see Allison get out of the van, a relieved expression going across her face when she sees me. I guess she might have thought that I didn't make it in the van before Stiles had pulled away.

My head turns towards another direction when I see a car pull up, it being Scott. He gets out quickly as he walks over to Allison and Stiles, a worried look on his face. The three of them huddle up, and that was when I knew that they were going to have a serious discussion.

"If Jackson doesn't remember being the Kanima, he sure won't remember stealing Danny's tablet," Scott says, referring to the tablet he was trying to get that had footage of Jackson on the night of the full moon on it.

Stiles shakes his head, clearly frustrated. "Why would he steal the thing if he doesn't even know what's on it?"

"What if someone else took it?" Allison says, placing her hands on her hips.

Stiles extends his arms. "Then somebody else knows what he is."

"Which could mean that someone is protecting him," Scott says, too much enthusiasm behind his words.

Allison nods her head. "Yeah, the Bestiary says that the Kanima seeks a friend, right?"

"Okay so wait. Someone watches Jackson take a video of him turning into the Kanima and then erases part of it so he doesn't know? Who would do that?" Stiles says as we all think.

Allison takes a deep breath. "Somebody who wanted to protect him?"

"Wait there's something else," Scott says while holding up a finger. "You said that you looked it up online and it said that the Kanima only goes after murderers, right? What if that's actually true?"

Stiles shakes his head. "It can't be. It tried to kill all of us, remember? I don't know about you two, but I haven't murdered anybody lately."

"I don't think it was actually trying to kill us," Scott says as I try to think of any possibilities, but I come up with nothing.

"It did just go right past us at Issac's," I say to Allison, causing her to nod briefly.

Scott looks over at Stiles. "It didn't kill you at the Mechanics Garage."

"Well yeah, but it tried to kill me and Derek at the pool," Stiles says with a blank face.

"Did it?"

"It would've. I was waiting for us to come out!" Stiles exclaims.

Scott looks off into space. "What if it was trying to keep you in?"

Stiles' eyes widen. "Why do I feel so violated all of a sudden-"

"Because there's something else going on, but we don't know what it is. We don't know what is going on with Jackson, or who is trying to protect him, or-"

"Know thy enemy," Allison says, her eyes staring off into space before she notices that Scott and Stiles are looking at her, waiting for her to explain. "Something my grand father said."

"Alright, I got it. Kill Jackson--problem solved," Stiles says with too much enthusiasm.

Scott sighs. "We aren't killing him."

"Why not? It would be so much simpler..."

I furrow my eyebrows as I look over at Allison, coming up with a possible plan. "Maybe you guys could set a trap for whoever is protecting Jackson. You know--make him come out from hiding."

Allison nods her head as she looks at me, forgetting about her surroundings. "That could work, Corey. Or you could just follow Jackson around-"

Allison cuts herself short when she realizes that she was talking to me, meaning that it appeared to Scott and Stiles that she was talking to air. She slowly turns and looks back at the two boys, who were staring at her with confused looks.

"Um, Allison?" Stiles says while pointing towards me. "I don't know if you realize, but you're talking to a tree."

Allison opens her mouth to speak, her words fumbling. "Y-Yeah I know. I was uh...um-"

"Corey..." Scott fades out, staring at Allison as if she had just confessed her deepest sins. "I've heard you say that name before."

Allison doesn't say anything as she looks over at me, panic written across her face. Stiles and Scott stare at her with betrayed looks, clearly wanting her to explain herself.

"Is there something you need to tell us?" Stiles says while crossing his ams. "Please don't tell me you're going insane like Lydia."

"I'm not, I swear-" Allison says, but that was before a loud sound cuts her off. All of our heads whip towards the van when we see the doors go flying off, landing into a tree before falling to the ground. My heart stops when I hear the shriek of the Kanima, followed by a blur jumping out and running towards us.

I don't have time to react before blood goes flying up onto the trees around us.

--------

cliff hangers are so fun yay

So...Scotty and Stiles are finally suspecting something off with Allison. Should Allison tell them what's really going on, or keep Corey a secret? (her dirty little secret muhaha.)

Don't forget to comment and vote lovelies. Thanks so much for reading <3
