15. Rising Tide
Well, I ended up telling Allison what I had found, leading us to find a file on Gerard's keychain that was there the whole time. When I had finally reached the school that night, Scott had scared that creature off and Stiles and Derek made it out of the pool alive. Allison kept telling me that if I hadn't have told them then they could be dead, but I didn't feel like much of a hero. After all, I was the one who ran away instead of staying to help.
Before we even had a chance to plug the Bestiary in, Derek had already known what that creature was all along, making me hate him even more than I already did. That thing is something called a Kanima; but that's about all we know about it so far. When we eventually did pull up the file, we found that it was all in some other language that I sure as hell didn't know. So that was a major setback.
Allison has been trying to translate some of it, staying up way past her bedtime. I usually will stand behind her and watch, trying not to be too distracting, but we all know how big of a blabber mouth I am. However, most of the things I do say to her are telling her to get some sleep and things like that. I don't want her to work too hard.
"Have you found anything yet?" I ask her as we walk down the school hallway, heading to some class I could care less about.
Allison shrugs as she pulls out her phone, acting as if she was on the phone with someone rather than talking to a ghost. "Just some stuff about where it originates but that's about it. Apparently this thing is a werewolf gone wrong; because sometimes the shape you take can reflect the type of person you are."
I think for a moment, my mind getting lost in coming up with possibilities of who is might be. "I hate to say this, but what if it's Lydia? You did say she was bitten and didn't turn."
"I've thought of that too," Allison says, her voice distant as if she didn't want to imagine her friend being that monster. "But Lydia isn't a snake. She just can't be."
"I don't know Allison," I say, looking over at her as we walked into one of the classrooms. "What other possibilities are there?"
The second I say this, I look up and see Allison's eyes pause on someone, causing me to follow her gaze. For a moment I thought she was looking at Scott, but instead she was looking at some boy behind him. He seemed sort of familiar, but I didn't know his name.
"What about Jackson?" Allison says, her voice at a very low whisper. The boys eyes flash up for a moment at the sound of his name, which causes me to raise an eyebrow. Only I should have been able to hear Allison, other than Scott who has werewolf hearing. Maybe Allison was right.
"Get in your seats," I hear the teacher say, who happened to be the school coach. I watch as Allison shoves her phone back into her purse, walking over and sitting beside Lydia. The two exchange words as I walk over to Scott and Stiles, listening to what they were saying to Jackson.
"Hey testical left and right," Jackson says, already causing me to not like him. He seemed like a dick from the very start. "What the hell is a Kanima?"
I raise my eyebrows as Scott and Stiles turn and look at him, confused as to how he knew what that even is. Before they get to ask any questions, Coach is already yelling at the class.
"Alright listen up!" he yells, slamming a book onto the table. "Quick warning for you all. Some of you, like McCall, might want to start study groups. Because tomorrow's mid-term is so profoundly difficult, I'm not even too sure I could pass it."
I hear the whole class groan as Coach laughs, finding amusement in teenagers pain. You know, I couldn't tell if I liked this guy or not. He was funny as hell but also very...strange. I just couldn't describe it. Either way, I won't have to take this test because I'm dead. Another perk.
Coach has a volunteer go up to the board to answer a question as Scott and Stiles turn back around, wanting answers from Jackson. "Paralyzed from the neck down. Do you know how traumatizing that is?"
"Vividly," Stiles says, nodding his head.
Scott shakes his head. "Wait, why would they test you? Why would they think it's you?"
That was when I realized he was talking about Derek. "How should I know?"
"Do they think it's Lydia?" Stiles says, his voice frantic. It reminded me of what Allison had told me about him liking her.
"All they know is her name," Jackson says before I see Coach walk up behind them, an angry look on his face. "I heard they wanted to try something in Chemistry-"
"Jackson!" Coach yells while the whole class jumps at the sound of his voice. "Is there something you'd like to share with the class?"
"Just..." he says as I wait for him to answer. "Just my admiration for my-my coach!"
Coach grins ear to ear as he places a hand on his chest, feeling moved at his words. "That's really kind of you...now shut up! Shut it!"
I jump at his yelling at the end, scaring me a little bit. I hear Allison snicker behind me as I turn and slightly glare at her, finding that she was amused by my sudden reaction. She covers her mouth with her hand as she continues to laugh, only making me smile.
"How do we know it's not her?" Scott says, bringing Stiles closer to him.
Stiles holds out his hand. "Because I looked into the eyes of this thing and it was pure evil. When I look into Lydia's eyes, I only see 50% evil...maybe 60...40% on a good day-"
"Stiles, that's not a very good argument," Scott says as Stiles sighs, knowing that he didn't have good proof. A part of me told me that Lydia couldn't be the Kanima, but all of the signs pointed at her. It just made the most sense.
"Lydia," I hear coach say, pointing at her raised hand. "Get your butt up here."
Lydia nods, but I could tell something was off. Allison and I watch with suspicious eyes as she walks up the board, almost looking as if she was being mind controlled. The room is silent as she picks up a piece of chalk, her tiny hands trembling. I listen to the screeching sound of the chalk against the board as she begins to write, but it was something I've never seen before.
EMPLEHENOEMOS
I glance back at Allison as she stares at the board, utterly confused at what her friend was writing. A part of her looked curious yet broken at the same time. I knew that she was broken inside for what that man had done to her friend; basically turning her insane. Lydia literally went from the top to the bottom in a matter of days, and she just kept making herself look crazier and crazier.
Lydia slowly turns and faces everyone as she sobs, her hand trembling so much that she dropped the chalk. She looked utterly petrified; almost like how she had heard me the first time in the woods. I wanted so much to help her out, but I couldn't.
"Lydia?" Coach says, snapping her from her daze. "Anyone else want to try answering? This time, in English?"
The class laughs as I look back at Allison, seeing the upset look on her face. I didn't blame her. Lydia was literally losing her mind and the rest of the class thought it was hilarious. It reminded me of when it used to be like that for me in school as well; except I wasn't losing my mind. At least, I hope I wasn't.
"What is that, Greek?" Scott asks, staring at the board as Lydia looks back on it as well.
Stiles holds out his phone. "Actually, I think it is English."
I look down at his phone as he shows Scott a photo of the board, at first not peaking my interest. But then Stiles reaches down and pressed the flip button, causing the photo to do a mirror effect. My eyes widen when I see that Lydia had written something; and it was in English.
Someone help me.
------
"Please tell me that didn't just happen," Allison says as we step into the hallway, pulling out her phone again to make it look like she was talking to someone.
I walk beside her as we squeeze through the other teenagers in the hallway. "It just happened, but I'd like to imagine that it didn't."
Allison shakes her head. "What is going on with her? Either she is something supernatural, or maybe she is just straight up losing her mind."
"I think that's the least of our worries right now," I say, looking down the hall and seeing Erica and Isaac walk into Allison's next class.
Allison looks up at me. "This should be interesting."
Allison starts to walk towards class before I hold my arm out, stopping her mid walk. "Are you sure you want to go to class? I'm sure you can skip-"
"Corey," Allison says, a faint smile on her face. "I have to go to class. Plus I need to protect Lydia and help Scott and Stiles. I can't just leave them."
I sigh. "Well yeah, but I don't want something else to happen-"
"I'll be fine," she says again before shoving her phone into her purse, walking down the hall until she reaches the room. I follow after her as we both step inside, seeing Scott and Stiles sitting on each side of Lydia while Erica and Isaac sat behind them. I watch Allison take a seat next to an unknown girl who was seated at the table next to Scott.
"Einstein once said that two things are infinite. The universe and human stupidity, but I'm not sure about the universe. I myself have encountered infinite stupidity," the teacher says while patting Stiles' back. "So, to combat the plague of ignorance in my class, you're going to combine efforts with a group of experiments. Let's see if two heads are indeed better than one. Or in Stilinski's case, less than one."
I roll my eyes as Allison covers her head with her hand, feeling the tension that was in the room. Stiles stares at the table with a pissed off expression as Lydia sits there, confused as to what exactly was happening. Besides, two of the schools "losers" were sitting beside her for a reason unknown to her.
"Erica, take the first station-" the teacher starts to say before hands shoot into the air, begging to be her partner. "I didn't ask for volunteers. Put your little slimy hormonal hands down...Erica you can start with Mr. McCall."
Scott's eyes widen as Erica smirks, knowing that she just won the first point in this game. I glance back at Allison, who's face had gone white once the teacher had said this. She didn't look jealous; more worried than anything else. She stares at the table for a moment before she looks up at me, an almost panicked look on her face.
The class soon gets their first partners before they scatter around the room, sitting with one another. I myself stayed standing in the front of the room; mostly so I could get an overview of what was happening. Besides, no one could see me anyways. Plus, I needed to keep an eye on both Allison and Lydia, just to make sure they both were alright.
Scott and Erica stay quite for a while before Scott quickly leans towards her, anger written on his face. "Whatever you're thinking about doing, wait. Give me a chance to talk to Derek."
Erica raises an eyebrow before sticking her face closer to Scott's as well. "How about you talk to me instead."
Scott scans Erica up and down before leaning away, clearly looking as if he was holding himself back. Erica smirks as she leans back, knowing exactly what the case was.
"It's funny that you two claim to not like one another," Erica says, making my blood boil. "You two clearly want to be all over each other."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Scott grits, glaring at the blonde snob in front of him.
Erica's face contorts into desire as she places her hand on Scott's thigh, raising her eyebrow. "I don't know about Allison, but if I were her, I'd be wanting you all the time."
I grind my teeth as I watch Scott tense up, not clearly sure of what he exactly wanted. I could tell that he was somewhat liking what Erica was doing, but then again something was holding him back. And I knew exactly what that something was.
Before I know it, Scott is grabbing Erica's hand and lifting it upwards, getting her off of him. His eyes flash gold for a moment as he snarls. "Get your hands off of me."
"Make me," Erica snarls, her eyes turning gold as well. For a moment there I was worried that they would actually start fighting, but instead the teacher rings a bell and tells everyone to move to their next stations.
I look up and see Allison say something to Lydia before she leaves, walking over to another station. For a moment I was relieved, but that was until I looked over and saw that Isaac was sitting with Lydia. Not only was this enough, but Erica was with Allison.
I run over to Allison and Erica, my eyes wide. "Don't say anything Allison-"
"What are you going to do to her?" Allison asks, ignoring my comment.
Erica places her finger on her chin before looking at Allison, her eyebrows raised. "Don't you think the better question is what she's going to do to us?"
I glare at Erica as she looks around the room for a moment, her eyes landing on Scott. "I have to say, you guys would be cute together. But you know, I've always had this feeling that I'm a little psychic. I just don't think it's ever going to happen."
My fist clenches as Allison keeps her mouth shut, clearly looking as if she was biting her tongue to keep her from saying something stupid. "Don't listen to her Allison-"
"I really do think him and I would make the better couple," Erica urges, a smile on her face. "Besides, how could a werewolf and hunter stay together?"
"Do you think you're hurting me?" Allison says, scoffing. "You'd have to do more than slide your hand up his thigh."
Erica snarls. "Would you like it to be your thigh?"
All I see is red when I see Erica place her hand on Allison, her claws extended. My breathing increases as her nails slightly dig into her skin, but not drawing any blood. I wanted nothing more than to beat the living shit out of Erica, but I knew I couldn't. At least not here and now.
"Girl fight Allison?" Erica says, her eyes glowing yellow.
The tension grows as Allison grits her teeth. "Bring it on, bitch."
The bell dings again, drawing Erica away from Allison. The two have a hardcore stare down before they face the front of the class, looking over at Isaac and Lydia. My hearts thumps in my chest as I stares at Allison, shaking my head in worry for her. She just challenged a werewolf; one that was snobby enough as it is. I can't even imagine what she just got herself into.
"Time. Now if you catalyzed the mixture correctly, you should be looking at a crystal. Now, for the part of the experiment I'm sure you'll all enjoy, you can eat it." My heart stops at the last sentence, causing me to look over at Lydia and Isaac.
Allison and the rest of us watch with wide eyes as Lydia grabs the rock candy, a sticky substance dripping off of it. I knew immediately what it was. It was Kanima venom.
"Lydia!" Scott yells suddenly, standing up from his seat. Lydia looks back at him, a confused look on her face.
"What?" she snaps, clearly angry that he just disrupted the whole class by shouting her name.
Scott looks around for a moment before sitting down slowly. "Um, nothing. Never mind."
Lydia shrugs before taking a huge bite of the candy, causing me to cringe. We all watch as she eats the candy away as if nothing had happened, not being affected by the venom at all. I gulp after I knew what this had to mean.
Lydia was the Kanima.
