10. Comfort Zone
It ended up taking Allison two and a half hours to break free. I just ended up sitting there and watching her, offering to try and help every time she groaned in anger. However, every time I tried, she told me no and gave me the same reason why. I wasn't sure how I felt about her saying that she wanted to be a hunter, but I didn't let it bother me too much. I knew that she would do what was right in the end.
As she tried to cut through the rope, I sat on the burnt floor and tried to figure out what my trigger could be. I tried using anger again, but that didn't work. I tried a lot of emotions, but none of them worked either. Maybe it was because they weren't true emotions, but I hope that I'll figure it out soon enough. I have a feeling that I'll need to learn soon.
"You have to climb that?" I say, looking up at a huge rock wall centered in the middle of the school gym.
Allison shrugs. "Shouldn't be that hard."
I raise an eyebrow as she struts away, looking over her shoulder slightly at me. I cock my head slightly as she smiles, causing me to notice that she was doing that strut on purpose. My eyes trail down to her butt before I quickly look up again, trying not to fall for her little plan. She laughs as I roll my eyes slightly, smiling along with her.
She smirks until she walks into someone, the smile on her face disappearing. I cross my arms as I walk closer, seeing a boy that I haven't seen yet. Allison looks up at him with wide eyes as he furrows his eyebrows.
"What were you laughing at?" he says, looking back towards me.
Allison flusters. "I-I was laughing at something someone said."
He looks suspicious for a moment before he shrugs it off. He nods before cocking his head slightly. "I'm Matt by the way."
Allison smiles faintly as she backs away from him, looking a little awkward. "I'm-"
"Allison," he cuts off, smiling at her. Some type of hatred rises in me as he stares at Allison, clearly having a huge crush on her. Allison seems a little creeped out before he speaks quickly. "I only know because I heard that Scott kid talking about you at Lacrosse practices."
Allison raises her eyebrow. "What's he been saying about me?"
He shrugs. "Just about how good of friends you two are."
I walk up and stand behind Allison as I stare at this Matt character, noticing that his forehead was starting to sweat. "Oh, well, we are."
Matt nods before rubbing the back of his head with his hand. "Yeah...Hey, I was wondering if maybe you'd-"
Matt gets cut off as Coach yells. "Allison and Scott are up! Come on, we don't have all day!"
Allison nods towards Matt before running off towards the rock wall, clipping the hook onto the harness around her waist. Scott comes from the crowd as he clips the hook onto his harness as well, looking over at Allison and smiling.
"Ready to do this?" he says, sounding a little cocky.
Allison tugs on her harness for a moment. "I am, are you?"
Scott raises his eyebrow. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Allison laughs. "I mean, are you ready for a girl to beat you?"
"Excuse me?" Scott laughs. "I'm the one with heightened abilities here."
Allison smiles before placing a foot onto one of the rocks. "Yeah, but I've had training, and I'm pretty sure that I can beat you any day."
Scott laughs. "Oh really now? I guess we'll just have to see about that."
I look over and see Coach start his stopwatch before Allison and Scott are off. Allison gets a head start as she quickly and carefully places her hands and feet onto the rocks, getting farther up with every second. For a few seconds, she looked like she was going to win before Scott catches up quickly, practically jumping from each rock to the next. I had to admit, he did have some crazy awesome coordination.
I smile at the two before I look over and see Matt watching them climb the wall, practically drooling. I raise an eyebrow before walking around and facing him, following his eyes to see that he was staring at Allison's butt. I narrow my eyes in frustration, wishing that I could deck the guy in the face. He seemed like a total pervert and a creep.
I turn and look back up at Allison and Scott to see Allison reach out with her foot and knock Scott's hand away, causing him to lose his grip. His feet slip before the next thing I know, he was falling to the mat below. My shoulders raise slightly before someone tightens the rope, catching him barely from hitting the ground. He lets out a breath of relief before the whole class erupts into laughter.
"Way to go McCall!" Coach says, grinning. "Looks like you got some slick hands!"
Scott groans before I look back up at Allison, seeing her laughing. She touches the top of the rock wall before slowly lowering herself to the ground, glancing over at me before back at Scott, helping him get unharnessed.
"What was that you said about winning?" Allison mocks as the two of them walk back into the group of teenagers.
Scott rolled his eyes. "You cheated."
Allison laughs before playfully punching his arm. "It's called bending the rules."
Scott scoffs before I look over and see Stiles step up to climb the wall, a girl standing next to him. Her hair was matted and she was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie. Stiles glances over at her before turning to the wall, climbing up it with ease. The girl looks up at it before slowly starting to climb up it, her arms and legs a little shaky.
"Who is that?" I ask, turning to Allison. Allison turns and looks up the wall before whispering under her breath.
"That's Erica," she says as Scott turns to her.
"What did you say?" he says, furrowing his eyebrows.
Allison fake smiles. "Huh? I didn't say anything."
Scott nods before turning back to the wall, myself doing so as well. I watch as Stiles lowers himself back down to the floor, turning around and holding up his arms as if he just accomplished something major. I laugh slightly before I look back up at Erica, seeing that she was frozen in place.
"Uh, Allison?" I say while pointing up at her. Allison follows my finger before she runs forward, walking over to Coach with a concerned look on her face.
"What's wrong with her?" Coach says, looking up at Erica.
Allison looks up. "Coach, she's epileptic."
Coach widens his eyes before looking back up. "Why doesn't anyone tell me these things. Erica, just let go of the wall and we'll lower you down safely. I promise we'll catch you."
Erica looks hesitant before she slowly lets go of the wall, grasping the rope for dear life. A kid lowers her to the ground before she stands, taking the harness off around her waist. A few snickers come from the crowd of teenagers as Erica notices, turning and running off towards the hallway. I hear her sob before she dissapears around the corner, leaving the gym.
"You all should be ashamed of yourselves," Coach says, shaking his head. "Go think about how crappy you are while you change."
The class continues to laugh before they all turn and head towards the locker rooms. Allison looks off to where Erica ran off before she shakes her head, glancing over at me.
"I feel so bad for her," she whispers to me. "Maybe I should go check on her-"
"Just leave her alone for awhile," I say. "She probably wants to be alone right now anyways."
Allison sighs before nodding her head, turning and heading back towards the locker room. A part of me wanted to go check up on Erica myself, but I wanted to give her her privacy. I knew what it was like to be laughed at, and it did not feel good.
I turn around and see Allison disappear around the corner before I walk over to the bleachers, deciding to just sit and wait for her to change out here. Besides, it would be a little creepy if I followed her into the locker room. I mean, I have already seen her shirtless, but I wasn't going to dare to fuck up like that again. I still curse myself over that.
As I sat there, I kept thinking about everything that was going on. I mean, there's the lizard creature out there threatening people's lives, people like Allison, and there was her grandfather that we had to worry about. Plus the fact that she agreed to help me come back and to find Jade, but I knew that we were going to have to put that on hold until all of this stuff was over with. And for some reason, I was okay with that. Maybe it was the fact that I would get to spend more time with Allison or maybe that I liked not having to worry about dying, but whatever it was, I was okay with staying dead for awhile.
Speaking of Jade, I still wondered about her. I haven't seen her or heard from her, and I was starting to wonder if she was even in the same world with me, if that was even a thing. Then I wondered what that dream thing was whenever Lydia screamed. I knew it couldn't have been real, but it sure seemed real. I wonder if maybe Lydia's scream triggered it; maybe I should test that out sometime.
I must have lost myself in my thoughts, because when I looked back up, I saw Erica up on the rock wall. My eyes widen as she starts to shake, looking like she was going to fall; and she wasn't wearing a harness. I start to take off towards the rock wall, hoping that my trigger thing would start working right about now. I needed to go get Allison, but I knew I didn't have enough time to do so.
My heart races as I stand underneath Erica, prepared to catch her if I could figure out how. I close my eyes and focus this time on fear before I hear Erica let out a gasp above me. I look up to see her let go of the rock wall, falling to the mat below. I take a deep breath, hoping that my trigger worked as Erica fell towards my outstretched arms. I thought for a moment that I was about to catch her before someone else is there, catching her as I stand still.
It was Scott.
I widen my eyes as Scott lowers her to the ground, Allison and Stiles running up from behind him. I stand back as Erica shakes on the floor, seeming to be having a seizure. Allison kneels beside Scott as she grabs Erica's hands, trying to hold her still. She looks back up at me quickly, a sad look on her face.
I shake my head. "I'm so sorry. I should have been paying attention-"
"How did you know?" she asks Scott, cutting me off.
Scott shakes his head. "I felt it."
I turn around when I hear Coach and the rest of the class come running out, staring at Erica in confusion. Coach orders Scott and a couple of other boys to carry Erica out and to the nurse before they do so, leaving the rest of us standing in the gym.
After everyone calms down a little, Allison turns and faces me. "Did you not see her climb the wall?"
I shake my head. "I-I wasn't paying attention. It was my fault."
Allison shakes her head before resting her hand on my shoulder. "It wasn't your fault. She's fine; that's all that matters."
I nod before my eyes trail to my shoulder, looking down at Allison's hand. "Wait-you can touch me again?"
Allison furrows her eyebrows. "Huh?"
I stare at her hand. "Last night I couldn't touch you when I tried to get the man away from you. No matter what I did, I couldn't do anything to help."
Allison furrows her eyebrows. "That's weird. Maybe there's something you have to do to touch me?"
I sigh. "Most likely, since that's the way everything else works on this side."
Allison laughs, her nose crinkling up. "We'll figure it out, Corey. I promise."
She smiles at me before she removes her hand from my shoulder, turning and running off towards where they took Erica. I stand there and smile for a moment before taking off after Allison, thankful to have her here to help me.
