09. Trigger

"What was that thing?" I ask as Allison drives down the road, heading towards the gas station. Allison doesn't look over at me as I push her more. "We have to talk about this sometime."

Allison sighs. "If we talk about it, then that means it's our problem to deal with, and I don't know if I can handle it."

"Allison," I start leaning towards her. "It came after you. I'm sorry to say, but you're already dragged into this; whether you like it or not. It's not something you can just ignore."

Allison shakes her head. "Why not? It's not like it hasn't killed anybody?"

I lean back. "What if it has?"

Allison furrows her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

I lick my lips. "What if it wasn't Lydia who killed that ambulance driver the other night? What if it was that lizard creature?"

Allison starts to say something before she pauses, sucking in a breath. She ponders for a moment before nodding her head. "That would actually make sense. They did find claw marks on the body; which were very unwerewolf like."

I nod my head. "See? This thing has killed people. We can't let it kill anyone else either."

Allison nods her head. "Yeah, but we don't even know what we're up against. You saw that thing. How are we supposed to figure out what it is or what it can do?"

I shake my head. "I don't know, but I do know that we need to prevent it from killing anyone else."

Allison is silent for a moment before she glances over at me. "Since we're on this topic, care to explain to me how in the hell you were able to block it when it lunged at me?"

"I don't know that one either," I say, staring at the road. "All I wanted to do was protect you, and I did."

Allison is silent for a moment. "I can protect myself, Corey."

I sigh. "Allison, I know you can, but what happened the other night scared me half to death. All I could think about was you getting hurt and that I wouldn't be able to do anything to help."

"But you did," Allison says. "You distracted it long enough somehow for Scott to come scare it off. I don't know how you did it, but we need to figure it out. What if it's something like a trigger? Like what werewolves have?"

"Huh?" I say, furrowing my eyebrows. "What do you mean like a trigger?"

Allison takes a turn. "I mean, Scott told me that the trigger for werewolves is anger. It makes them stronger; more powerful. What if you're able to do more things when you focus on something like that?"

I shake my head. "Focus on anger?"

"Or something else," she says, thinking for a moment. "Maybe something like fear or courage."

I sigh. "Well, I'll try that next time when you're being attacked."

Allison laughs. "You probably won't have to wait long until then."

Allison pulls into the gas station, which looked a little mysterious to me. There wasn't a single car there and the lights were flickering strangely. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand.

"Where is everyone?" I say as Allison parks the car.

She shrugs. "Who knows. It is getting pretty late."

She starts to get out of the car as I look inside the gas station. "Isn't there at least suppose to be someone inside?"

Allison puts in some money before looking at me. "Calm down, Corey. What do you think is going to happen? I'll get kidnapped?"

I look around. "That's very possible."

Allison laughs. "I'll be done in a few minutes. Calm down and wait in the car if you have to."

I shake my head. "No way will I leave you out here alone."

Allison rolls her eyes as I watch a motorcycle pull into the gas station, a dark colored man riding it. He pulls up and parks the motorcycle before taking his helmet off, looking over at Allison and smiling. She returns the favor as the man proceeds to fill his motorcycle up with gas, no longer acknowledging that we were here.

"Creeper," I say, intensely staring at him. I was watching each and every little move he made; for the fear that he would suddenly spring and hurt Allison.

Allison rolls her eyes but doesn't say anything; probably since she didn't want to look like a person who hears voices in her head. I didn't blame her.

The man fills his motorcycle up with gas quickly before getting back onto his bike, nodding towards us before placing his helmet back on. He starts the bike again before taking off down the highway, breaking the deathly silence we had heard not too long ago.

"You can breath now Corey," Allison laughs before taking the gas nozzle out of her gas tank. After she says this, I did realize that I wasn't breathing; probably to absorbed in watching the man.

I suck in a breath before rolling my eyes, Allison laughing at me. I was about to fire back a comment before the lights suddenly go out, plunging us into darkness. My eyes scan our surroundings as Allison places the gas nozzle back.

"This really is a scene from a horror movie," I mutter, shaking my head. "Can we please get out of here now?"

Allison shakes her head. "Yes Corey. How are you the scared one and you're already dead?"

I look around as Allison gets into the drivers seat. "I'm not scared about me. I'm scared for you-"

"What the hell?" Allison says, her eyes wide. "My keys are gone!"

My heart starts to race. "Come on. You probably dropped them or something."

Allison gets out of the car as we both scan the ground, not seeing her keys anywhere. I kneel down on my hands and knees and look under the car as well; not seeing anything but concrete.

"Where could they-" Allison starts to say before she cuts off. I furrow my eyebrows before I look back up, my heart stopping at what I see. There was a man with a black ski mask on standing there holding a bag over Allison's head.

"Allison!" I scream as Allison fights from the man's grasp. I hear her gasp for air as I stand, trying to figure out what to do. Allison's words about a trigger run through my mind again as I focus on my anger, wishing that it would work.

My eyes flash open, anger coursing through me. I yell before reaching to punch the man, but my fist just flies right through him. I stare at my fist for a moment, all hope fading from me. I try to punch the man again as Allison fights, but it just goes though him once again.

I stop fighting when I see Allison's body fall still, the man in the ski mask catching her before she hit the concrete. I scream at him to stop, to let her go, but I knew it was no use. He couldn't hear me and I couldn't stop him.

"Allison!" I yell as the man drags her back to a black SUV that I didn't notice before. "Allison, you have to wake up! Come on!"

I felt utterly useless as the man opens the back door, placing her in the seat and shutting the door. I walk through the door as I sit next to Allison, tears forming in my eyes. I hated just sitting here watching this man take her away. If only I was alive, I would beat the tar out of this guy.

The man walks around the SUV before getting into the drivers seat, starting the engine before tugging at his mask. I watch as he pulls it off, revealing the same man that was on the motorcycle here a few moments ago. Anger rises in me as he looks back at Allison, making sure she was still passed out before he drives off down the road.

Everything seemed so confusing as I look back at Allison, seeing that the bag was still over her face. I reach for it to take it off, but my hand just passes right on through. I furrow my eyebrows before I go to grab Allison's head, but it passes right through her. This wasn't right. Her and I were able to touch before, why not now?

All I could do was wonder as the man drove Allison away.

The car slows to a stop before I look out the window, seeing that we were in front of some type of burned down house. It looked vaguely familiar for some reason, but I couldn't remember why. It must have been that house I saw in the woods the other night when I found Lydia.

I watch with narrow eyes as the man gets out of the SUV, walking around and opening the back door. Anger rises in me as he reaches up and grabs Allison's ankles, pulling her out gently. I just watch as he flings her over his shoulder, leaving the bag over her face. I follow after him as he carries Allison up to the house, which looked like was falling apart.

"Mr. Argent?" the man says as I furrow my eyebrows. I step inside and look around, seeing that this place must be a couple of years old. I widen my eyes when I see Allison's father there; taped down into a chair.

The man holding Allison walks forward and places Allison into another chair that was straight across from him, bounding her hands in rope behind her back. I just stood there and watched him do so as I felt utterly weak. I wanted to help desperately, but I couldn't.

The man makes sure that Allison is secure before he walks around behind her, wrapping his hand around the bag and lifting it upwards. My heart sinks when I see Allison's face; wet with tears and slightly red. Her hair was sticking up in different directions, but she still managed to look bad ass. The man grabs a piece of cloth before shoving it into her mouth, causing her not to be able to scream.

My heart races when I see her eyes start to flutter open, a soft moan coming from her lips. I race towards her and kneel beside her as I shake my head, tears forming in my eyes again. I tried to unwrap her hands from behind her, but I still couldn't touch her for some odd reason.

Allison's eyes snap open as she scans the room, seeing her father bound to another chair as well. Chris screams, but the shirt shoved into his mouth muffles it. He fights in his chair as well, not getting anywhere.

"Allison," I say as her eyes flick towards me. Her eyes wet with tears as she shakes her head, trying to say something but not coming out. "It's the guy from the gas station, okay? I'm trying to-"

I get cut off as something echos through the house. I listen for a moment before I recognize the voice. It was Derek.

"Ever wonder what happens when a hunter gets bitten?"

"Ever wonder what happens when you get bitten?"

I look up at Allison, furrowing my eyebrows. How and why was Derek here talking to them when the man from the gas station was the one who kidnapped her?

"What do you think your father would do?"

"What do you think he'd have to do?"

"When all it would take to change everything is one bite."

I start to question what he says before I look over and see Chris break free. I was happy for a moment before he stands up, looking at Allison as if she was meant to be in this chair. He holds up a remote before pressing pause, stopping the voice that was echoing throughout the house.

"Dad?" Allison muffles through the piece of cloth as he walks forward, ripping it out of her mouth. She stares up at him with wide eyes. "What are you doing?"

"Training," he says, throwing the cloth to the floor. Anger rises in me as he says this, acting as if this was just a practice run. "First lesson is for you to get out of that chair."

I watch as the man who kidnapped Allison walks behind her and places an arrow head in her hands, nodding towards her before exiting the room. I shake my head as Chris steps forward, staring at the arrow.

"Care to tell me about how you betrayed one of our own for a werewolf?" he says, glaring at Allison.

Allison shakes her head. "He was going to kill him-"

"That's the kind of hard choices hunters have to take," he snaps, looking at her as if she was a piece of garbage. "The women of the Argent family are meant to be leaders, not cowards."

I glare at him as he turns walk out. He stops for a moment before holding his phone up in the air. "Use that arrow to get out of that chair. Your time starts now."

He presses a timer on the phone before walking out of the house, leaving Allison here behind alone. A tear falls down her cheek as she shakes her head, not believing that this was happening. She looks down at me before she starts to move the arrow head back and forth across the rope.

"I can try and untie you," I say, standing up and walking around behind her. "I just need to find my trigger-"

"I need to do this," Allison says, her voice frail and weak. "I need to do this the right way."

I shake my head. "Are you kidding? I could help you get out of here sooner and you're telling me no?"

Allison nods weakly. "Yes. I need to do this on my own or else I won't ever learn."

"I thought you didn't want to be a hunter?" I say, her words ringing in the back of my mind from the first day I met her. She licks her lips before speaking softly and sternly.

"Now I do."

How did I turn a 10 minute scene into a whole chapter? Idek
