Chapter 46
"what... what did you say to him? that made him so angry?" Lightning asks hesitantly, looking up at Doc. Doc smiles at him a little resting his forehead against Lightnings gently.
"told him, you weren't his little punching bag anymore. you weren't his anything, that you're mine." Doc murmurs, leaning down to kiss him. Lightning smiles a little at him and cuddles him.
"thanks Doc." he mumbles.
"baby, I didn't do anything, that was all you." Doc smiles, standing up.
"are they done with the house yet? can we go home?" Lightning ask.
"of course baby, we'll leave in the morning. alright? I've put in a few anonymous calls to the police in Maryville, so by the time we get home, they should have them found." Doc murmurs.
"m'gonna send money to bury them... give them nice burial... but m'not gonna go up there... I can't. I promised myself I'd never go back to that house, to that town. so much happened there..." Lightning trails.
"what if we go there instead of home? hmm? just for a few days, just so you can see them put to rest? what if we go together. we'll stay just outside of town and you can go put some nice flowers on your mothers grave? how about that?" Doc murmurs.
"I dunno... I promised I wouldn't..." Lightning says hesitantly.
"we take the Hornet and we send it back to Arizona so Mack can haul it home and we fly to Ohio, long enough for them to bury your sister, and then we fly home. you've seen where I grew up, it'd be nice to see where you grew up." Doc murmurs. Lightnings quiet a moment, before he nods.
"okay." he mumbles. Doc smiles at him a little.
"alright. let me get everything all arranged alright? you just curl up here with Bolt and watch a movie. everythings going to be okay kid." Doc assures. Lightning nods a little and pats the bed gently as he lays back. Bolts immediately curled up beside him. if he could face his dad, he could face that old house.
Lightning doesn't remember the rest of the night before, he's not even sure how they got on the plane, but he's nervous and holding as tight to Docs good hand and Bolt as he can. he's so tense Docs afraid he's actually going to pass out.
"you're okay baby. it's okay we're gonna land soon Monty." Doc assures. Lightning whines quietly.
"I don't wanna be here." he says quietly.
"I know, but its okay." Doc assures gently.
"I can't do this." Lightning whimpers quietly.
"yes you can." Doc assures. "we're landing soon, you'll be fine." Doc assures. Lightning shakes his head a little, holding Smokey tighter.
"I wanna go home. how the hell are we going to get home? there's no why in hell I'm gonna be able to get a plane back." Lightning says nervously.
"just relax Monty. when we go to leave I'll give you half a xanax and once we get on the plan I'll give you another half. you'll be asleep by the time we land in Arizona and we'll get Mack to pick us up so he can carry you. you'll be alright. we just couldn't do that this time because I can't carry you like this." Doc assures, rubbing his thumb gently over the back of the younger mans hand. "its okay." Doc assures gently. "you're telling me you can drive head first into a 12 car pile up, with cars on fire, but you can't handle an hour and a half flight?" Doc ask. Lightning glares at him, pouting.
"I don't like flying. I've never liked flying. you know I don't like flying. this is why when you guys fly, I ride with Mack. I hate flying," Lightning snaps.
"shhh. its okay. 20 minutes and we land." Doc assures. Lightning looks a little sick.
"think I'd rather stay on the plane." Lightning mutters quietly.
"come on kid. its okay." Doc assures. Lightning sighs quietly.
as they get off the plane, Lightning looks positively sick. he's clutching Docs hand and Bolts leash as they walk through the airport. he had never been supported by the little town, that seemed to know his father beat him and didn't care, so he's pretty surprised to see giant signs and posters everywhere with his face or car on them with Welcome to Maryville, Ohio! home of 7 time Piston Cup champion Lightning McQueen!
"whoa." Doc mutters, looking around. "thought you said this town hated you...?" Doc ask, shocked.
"they do." Lightning mutters, holding tighter to Docs hand. "come on, this way." Lightning mumbles. he leads Doc to get their luggage, but it's gone.
"hey boss!" Mack shouts. Doc and Lightning share a confused look before turning around.
"Mack? what the hell are you doing here?" Lightning ask.
"Rust-eze sent me over. said you might need a body guard with two arms here." Mack says. "also I grabbed your bags." Mack adds. its just two suit cases, one for Lightning and Bolt and the other for Doc, with some of Bolts toys shoved into it. "this place is crazy about you. we gotta get you guys out to the rental car." Mack says.
"how'd you get here so fast?" Lightning ask.
"its only a four hour flight, did you know you can mack that in 45 minutes on a jet? I didn't." Mack snorts a little. "come on." Mack says leading the way to the rental car. Lightning tightens his hold on Bolts leash.
"well I'll be a sonuva bitch." one of the security guards snorts, walking over. "little Montgomery Fallen, though I suppose you go by Lightning McQueen now hmm?" he snorts. Lightning looks over blankly.
"sorry do I know you?" Lightning frowns.
"how many times did I catch you stealing from that corner store down the road from your dads house?" he smirks. Lightning looks confused a moment before his eyes widen some. a small smile appears on his face.
"officer Douglas." Lightning mutters, letting go of Docs hand to shake the officers.
"eh, just Will now kid." Will chuckles.
"Will thats Mack my best friend and bodyguard, this is Doc my crew chief." Lightning says. "hey Mack you remember that one rookie cop I told you about?" Lightning ask.
"yeah." Mack says, looking over.
"this is him." Lightning chuckles.
"not a rookie anymore kid." Will smirks.
"I ain't a kid anymore. I'm almost 30." Lightning snorts. he looks around. "whats all this crap?" Lightning ask. Will shrugs.
"all this stuff went up when it got out just exactly who you were." Will says. "I think they think people will want to visit more if they know its your home town." Will adds.
"works for Thomasville." Doc mutters, looking around.
"Thomasville has one sign, there's hundreds just here in the airport." Lightning mutters.
"yeah and you haven't even see the rest of the town... you here to see your dad or something?" Will ask. Lightning frowns.
"no, I'm here to help them find the bodies of my sister and step mother whom my dad buried under that old porch." Lightning says.
"Emily right? little 8 year old who went missing after her mother went missing... how do you know where their bodies are?" Will ask confused. Lightning frowns again, holding Bolts leash tighter.
"his asshole of a father finally came clean on his death bed." Doc says. Will looks shocked.
"Elliots dead?" Will ask.
"yeah, serves the bastard right." Lightning mutters. "come on guys." Lightning mumbles walking away. Mack and Doc follow him quickly.
"so who was that?" Doc ask.
"Officer William Douglas. he used to catch me stealing snacks from the store, but instead of turning me in, he'd pretend I was gonna get in trouble, then let me sit in his patrol car and warm up or cool off depending the weather, while I ate. he tried to have something done about my dad and almost lost his job for it. he's how I made it so far so fast. he took a week vacation and drove me as far away as he could before coming back." Lightning explains. Bolt wags his tail happily, keeping pace with his beloved owner. "I just hope we don't run into anyone else. lets just get this shit done and go the hell home." Lightning mutters, patting his pockets for his wallet. "I do want to stop by that store though, if its the same owner, I owe him some money." Lightning adds. Doc smiles at him a little and nods.
they head outside and get in the rental, though Macks sitting in the back and Doc is in the passenger seat. Lightnings driving because he's the only one who know the area. the town hasn't changed much since he was a kid and he's silent as they drive. he keeps the passenger window down and keeps checking on Doc silently as he drives, he doesn't want the older man getting sick.
the car pulls up to a nice house at the end of the road, surrounded by trees.
"the only thing he was good at besides drinking and beating me, was hiding it." Lightning mutters, looking at the house. they've got a crew out there getting ready to pull up the back porch.
"how are we getting in?" Doc ask, looking over. Lightning smiles a little and shuts the car off, getting out. the other two get out and watch him. they leave Bolt in the car with the windows down a little.
"don't judge me." Lightning mutters. the other two look confused and Lightning sighs. he grunts getting into a handstand to look at the trees.
"what are you doing?" Doc ask.
"looking." Lightning mutters. he stands himself up dusting off and walks over to a group of trees. "kept losing my spare key, so I hid it where only I could find it." Lightning explains. he reaches into the trees.
"how do you know its there?" Mack ask.
"because when you turn the trees upside down, they look like a train." Lightning mutters. he shrugs a little pulling the key on a chain out. "I was six, give me a break." Lightning adds. he heads over to the house, with the other two following behind. he smiles at the little concrete porch. it's got four hand prints on it. "those first two are mine and my moms. the other two are Emilys and Mikealas. he added extra concrete so it would make it look like he cared about them, but to me, it just looks like a kill count, only I got away." Lightning says, walking over to the door. he takes a shaky breath, swallowing. he carefully unlocks the door, slowly letting it swing open, staring into the house. he sighs and slowly walks in.
"Im surprised this house actually looks nice." Doc mutters.
"its always looked like this. he was afraid if it didn't look nice, everyone would realize I wasn't a liar." Lightning mutters. he shoves his hands into his pockets swallowing hard. its obvious his father hasn't changed anything. "my room was this way." Lightning says, heading upstairs. "can't tell you how many times he threw me down these stupid things." Lightning says. he pauses and turns half way up the stairs, with a half smile. there's a gap in the stair railing. "Emily got her head stuck between the rails here and he was so pissed the fire department cut the rail to get her out." Lightning chuckles. he heads up stairs and turns left. there's an old torn and dirty sign on the door to his room, that would've been way out of his reach when he was a kid, alerting everyone that he was a gay kid and deserved to be punished.
"well thats nasty." Doc mutters at the note.
"everytime Emily or Mikaela took it down, he'd put it back." Lightning says, wrenching the door open, there's no door knob so it wasn't like he could hide in there. "he added the door when I was 10 and CPS lady told him he had to have it or he's lose me, before the door he'd tape it to my wall. I was a kid and I deserved privacy." Lightning says. the room is pretty bare. there's an old dirty matress in the corner of the room with an old blanket laying on top of it. there's not a sheet on it. there's a small plastic three drawer cabinet with some old clothes in it to the side. there's no door on the closet, but its empty. "this was my room." he mutters. he walks over to the closet and crouches down, pulling part of the carpet up, along with some of the floorboard. he pulls out a small box and smiles a little.
"this is pretty bland." Mack says.
"whats that kid?" Doc ask.
"stuff I didn't have room to take with me, but didn't want him to find in case I ever came back." Lightning says. he pulls his keys from his pocket and unlocks the little box. he opens it. there's not much in it. just a few items. there's a picture of him and his mother, him as a child, him and Emily, then him, Emily, and his stepmother. there's a couple of old NASCAR trading cards in there. Doc can't tell who they are, but he wouldn't be surprised if his card was in there. there's an old t-shirt thats actually signed by Strip back when he was a rookie. he pulls the stuff out of the box and hands the cards to Doc. "be careful with those. my mom went through alot to get those for me." Lightning mutters. Doc takes the cards and flips through them gently. he's got all of Docs old friends, but Docs card isn't actually in there.
"these are in great condition kid." Doc murmurs softly, smiling.
"had to put your card somewhere else after my dad destroyed a 3rd one." Lightning says, pulling a key from the box. he gets up and walks over to the old matress, moving it out of the way, before pulling at the wall trim. it pops off easily and he pulls out a second box. he opens it and pulls out an old tape, an old poster, and a singular trading card. he hands the stuff to Doc. "hold that stuff. I just want to grab my stuff while I have the chance." Lightning mutters. Doc takes the stuff and chuckles a little. unlike the other cards, his card is worn and old looking. its crinkled like Lightning carried it in his pocket a lot as a kid. the tape is labeled FHH wreck of '54 with a note on it, from who Doc assumes is Lightnings mom, that says make sure to keep this hidden! had to have a friend get it for you! he smiles a little.
"hey boss, I thought you had thsi car in your pocket when we met?" Mack ask, confused.
"I had two. thats the last one my mom got for me before she died, so I put it in a box to keep it safe. Mikeala got me the one I carried around." Lightning explains. he looks gets up out of the floor putting his stuff back into the boxes. "thats all I put in here." Lightning says. he walks past them and down the hall to another door. he opens it and walks in with Mack and Doc following behind.
"the bathroom?" Mack ask. Lightning nods.
"yeah. I was terrified of the bathroom as a kid because he'd tried to drown me in the bathtub a few times, so I knew it would be the last place he ever looked." Lightnings says, crouching down to get under the sink. he comes back out with a small bag that had been taped to the bottom of the sink.
"whats that?" Doc ask. Lightning frowns a little.
"I don't remember. its a key, to something." Lightning frowns a little, confused. "I can't remember." he mutters. "but it was important enough that I hid it here instead of in my room." Lightning mutters. he puts the key in his pocket. "thats it. thats all I have here." Lightning says. he grabs his stuff from the other two and heads out of the house.
"Montgomery Fallen. what the hell are you doing here kid?" a man scoffs. Lightning looks over, blinking.
"getting my stuff I wasn't allowed to grab when I was a kid. who the fuck are you?" Lightning ask.
"still holding on to that 'my dad beats me' thing?" he snorts.
"my dad did beat me. so fuck off." Lightning huffs, putting his stuff in the car. "what are you doing here?" he asks.
"supervising these 'bodies' we're supposed to find. got an anonymous tip off. did you bury these?" the man scoffs.
"I was fucking six. I didn't kill anyone." Lightning glares. "my dad abused me, raped my sister, and murdered both her and her mother." Lightning says.
"your still the scrawny little fag I remember pushing over on the playground.
"watch how you talk to him." Doc snaps. "do you have any idea who he is? because his lawyer can get you sued for defamation of character." Doc snaps.
"and who the fuck are you?" the man glares. Doc growls getting in his face.
"Doc Hudson, the man whose about to beat your ass if you get in his face again." Doc snaps. the man gets quiet and huffs a little, turning away.
"we've got something on the radars!" someone shouts. Lightning looks over.
"please be her." Lightning murmurs softly. Doc grabs him gently and pulls him into his chest so he doesn't have to see.
"don't look at that kid." Doc mutters quietly. Lightning shoves away, walking over to them. there's a bear laying in the dirt.
"we'll... we'll have to get them back to the lab to know for sure who they are." the man frowns. Lightning swallows hard.
"Timmy... its her. its Emily." Lightning mutters.
"how the fuck do you know?" the man glares.
"thats Timmy, I have Tommy at home in Radiator Springs. she never went anywhere without him after she found him in the closet. he was my moms matching bear. I gave it to her. thats Emily." Lightning mutters.
"okay kid, come on. you've seen it. they'll let us know in a few days. lets go stay in a hotel. I rented a room for us. we'll wait for the funeral." Doc says. Lightning shakes his head, watching them.
"I wanna go home." Lightning mutters tearfully.
"you don't want to stay for the funeral?" Doc ask. Lightning shakes his head again.
"I wanna get the hell out of this shit hole." Lightning mutters. "I just want to go home. I can't be here any longer." Lightning says shakily.
"come on. I'll see if I can change our flight for today or maybe tomorrow." Doc murmurs.
"boss hey, lets get to the hotel and relax okay? lets at least wait for them to confirm the identities." Mack murmurs.
"hey we got three more over here!" a voice shouts. Lightning looks over blankly.
"your dads a serial killer." Mack mutters.
"come on." Doc says, pushing Lightning into the passenger seat of the car. he hops in the driver seat while Mack climbs back into the backseat. Lightning curls up, hugging his knees.
"I was right. she's dead. they both are." Lightning mutters quietly. "I knew he was a fucking monster, but no one would believe me." Lightning adds, looking out the window. "how many fucking people has he killed all these years?" he mutters.
"kid don't focus on that. its okay." Doc murmurs softly. Lightning leans against the window of the car silently and Doc sighs a little, meeting Macks gaze in the rearview. Mack frowns at Doc, looking just as worried as the older man.
"I don't want to be here. I promised I'd never come back and here I am. the only fucking people who ever cared about me as a kid right under my feet." Lightning says tearfully. Doc sighs a little and drives them to the hotel.
Lightning is silent as they get to their room, Macks got his own room since Rust-eze flew him out unexpectedly. Bolt whines watching him and cuddles to his side.
"stay with him, let me see if I can get us on a flight tomorrow. we weren't supposed to leave for a week." Doc mutters. Mack nods and walks over to the bed to sit with Lightning on the bed. Doc walks out of the room. Mack looks over at Lightning.
"hey Boss? you okay?" Mack ask softly.
"do I fucking look okay?" Lightning snaps.
"you don't want to stay to make sure they get buried properly? beside your mom?" Mack ask.
"I want to go the hell home." Lightning says.
"I know, but I know you want to make sure they get treated right for once, right?" Mack ask. Lightning jumps up off the bed. Bolt follows him.
"leave me the hell alone Mack! you don't understand a damn thing! you have no idea what went on in that house! what I fucking went through! how much I hated them as a kid for thinking they ran off and left me behind! you have no idea what happened to me! what evil this town holds! you don't know and you can't know because you have no fucking idea what I went through in that house! what he did to me! what he did to them! you've no idea what I've seen! what he probably did to them! I want to go home! I don't want to be here! its a nightmare! this whole town! every minute here is a fucking nightmare! I never want to step foot in this state again, let alone this fucking town! I don't want to be in this hotel! I don't want to be in that house! I don't want to see these idiots who knew what was happening and let me suffer! I don't want to be in this town! I don't want to be in this state! and I won't sleep here! I'm going home if I have to fucking hitch hike to get out the way I did 13 years ago!" Lightning shouts. Mack sits shocked watching him. he's pacing the room like a mad man. he doesn't want to be here. the weight of being back in this awful town is crushing on him.
