Chapter 32
"uh, thanks." he chuckles, pulling out a hoodie. it was obviously picked by Mater, Sally, or Mack. someone younger and who knows his music choices, because its a Green Day hoodie. its white and covered in song lyrics from their all their different songs. "heh, its perfect." Lightning grins getting up from the couch and putting it on, except its clearly Docs size, because Lightning likes to wear bigger clothing. its huge on the man, like Docs clothing is. he grins at Doc, the hoodie actually smells like Docs cologne and after shave, so the older mans already worn the hoodie in hopes of convincing him to wear it. its nice to know that Doc doesn't mind him seeking comfort in familiar smells. he shoves his hands into the pocket happily and pauses finding something inside it. "whats this?" Lightning ask, pulling out whatever it is from his pocket.
"Mack said you might enjoy them." Doc shrugs a little.
"Green Day tickets." Lightning grins. he chuckles. "Doc you didn't have to, I would've been fine with just the hoodie." Lightning murmurs, walking over to hug him, because even if the hoodie smells like Doc, he'd rather have the real Doc. he hugs him tightly and Doc holds him, kissing his head. his hands are covered by the sleeves and the bottom of the hoodie is just past his hips, the hoodie would be slightly big on Doc, but the older probably went with whatever size he could get. Doc kisses his head, smiling. "you don't even like my music." Lightning mumbles, cuddling to him.
"hmm, well, I figured you could go with Red and Mack or something and have fun." Doc shrugs a little. he's not going to suggest himself, he's too old for that scene, and thankfully Lightning seems to understand. he knows his lover is a little two old for a concert, hell sometimes Doc was too old for the celebratory after race after parties, no way he could handle the loud music of a concert along with hundreds of screaming fans. he looks at the three tickets.
"thanks." he mumbles, cuddling him. "a lot. means a lot to me." Lightning mutters.
"I know it does kid. go, show Mack and Red." Doc smiles, pushing him towards the door.
"come on Bolt." Lightning says heading for the door. he struggles for a second with the door knob and his sleeve, but eventually runs out the door with Bolt following behind. Lightning runs straight to Reds house and lets himself inside. "Red!" he calls. Mack heads out of the bedroom.
"he's getting a shower, whats up?" Mack asks.
"what are you doing tomorrow?" Lightning ask.
"I feel like this is a trick question, what am I doing tomorrow?" Mack ask. Lightning hands him a ticket.
"this!" Lightning grins. the concert is literally two hours away, starting at about 4PM. Mack takes the ticket and reads it over, he vaguely realizes that its his bosses birthday. he smiles and hands them back. "Doc gave them to me. I have one for Red too." Lightning grins. he certainly can't tell his boss no on his birthday.
"awesome." Mack grins. "nice hoodie, I think Doc has one just like it." Mack snorts.
"I think he wore this one, probably to convince me to wear it." Lightning chuckles softly, a soft pink tint to his cheeks. Mack doesn't mention it, just smiles.
"alright well, Red'll be out in a second so you can tell him." Mack assures. Lightning nods a little, walking off. Lightning checks him over, but if Reds in the shower like Mack said, its obvious Mack hasn't joined him. he wants to ask about their relationship, but he doesn't want to upset Red by poking around. Red gets out of the shower after a few minutes and Lightning can hear Mack talking to him. "guess we're gonna have to stop making plans, he always figures it out and ends up crashing them, we're never going to have time together. forgot we signed up for full time babysitting. we better do it to, Doc'll yell at us like he did Sally if we don't." Mack snorts teasingly. Red huffs softly, rolling his eyes with a smile, and gets dressed. he heads out to the living room and looks around. its empty, not even Bolt is there, wich could've signaled Lightning was in the spare bathroom.
"Lightning?" Red ask. Mack walks up behind him. his boss is gone, he never heard him leave. Mack frowns and calls Doc.
"hey did the boss come back-" Mack ask.
"fuck off." Doc snaps, hanging up.
"what the hell?" Mack mutters.
"what?" Red ask curiously.
"Doc told me to fuck off and hung up on me." Mack frowns. Mack calls back and before he can get a single word out, Docs growling at him.
"if you didn't want to go with him, you could've just said something to his face instead of running off to talk about him behind his back. don't fucking worry, I'll find someone else to go with him. he saves you from blowing up and you can't even bother to have enough respect for him to tell him you don't want to go to his face." Doc growls, hanging up again. Lightning had come home sullen and quiet, but it wasn't hard to get what was wrong out of him. he'd over heard Mack and, though he knew he was just teasing with Red, it hurt. it hurt a lot more that either of them would realize, he thought they were all friends, but he also realized he was bothering them. he decided it was just best not to go with either of them, they wanted to spend time with each other and Lightning just keeps getting in the way. he really didn't have many friends, even after changing and becoming a better person, so he didn't really have many people he could invite to this. he honestly couldn't think of anyone who would go with him, so he shakes his head and looks up at Doc.
"you know what, with my dad hanging around, it's probably a bad idea to go to a concert anyway." Lightning says, smiling a little. the smile doesn't reach his eyes and Docs not sure if its because he's disappointed about not going or still hurt by Macks words.
"you could probably take Cal. he's just like you. he might like the same music." Doc murmurs. Lightning shrugs a little.
"its fine Doc, maybe I should just give the tickets to Red and Mack, they'd get more use. better to use two tickets instead of wasting all three." Lightning shrugs a little. Docs gaze snaps over to him.
"you're not doing that and you're not wasting them at all. call Cal, if he doesn't want to go, I'll go." Doc assures.
"Doc I love you, but these are front row tickets. these would kill you." Lightning said. Doc smiles.
"I'm willing to risk that." Doc assures, ruffling his hair gently, before kissing his head. "call Cal." Doc murmurs. Lightning grabs his phone, watching Doc walk out of the room.
"hey Cal, you busy tomorrow?" Lightning ask. "no its nothing important just curious." Lightning assures. he nods a little and hangs up. no Cal, he's in Florida.
"any luck?" Doc ask. Lightning sighs and looks up at Doc.
"uh, Doc, I really appreciate the tickets and I'm gonna feel guilty not using them... maybe I should just give them to Red and Mack... " Lightning says, looking up at Doc. Doc walks over and sits with him, pulling him close.
"okay come here baby." Doc murmurs, pulling him close. Lightning sighs softly and curls up beside Doc.
"I've never realized I don't really have any friends without the town." Lightning mutters. he sighs a little.
"thats fine. me and you can-" Doc starts. there's a knock on the door. "go hang out in the bedroom." Doc murmurs. Lightning does what he's told without question and Doc opens the door angrily. Red's standing there looking concerned.
"where is he?" Red ask.
"trying to find two people who won't talk about him behind his back to go with him to a concert for his fucking birthday. you know, you and Mack really ought t' know better. you dare call yourselves his friends." Doc snaps. Red looks confused.
"we didn't. Mack made a joke about babysitting, but it was just a joke because we spend so much time with him." Red says softly.
"if you were his real friends it wouldn't be babysitting. he's supposed to be your friend and he was really excited to be able to take two of his friends with him to a concert for his birthday. he was over joyed when I said the tickets were for you three and now he doesn't even want to go. he'd rather give you and Mack the tickets and stay home so they don't go to waste. you were supposed to be friends with him." Doc snaps. "he already thinks he a burden with the issues he's having and then you two go and talk about him like that! he doesn't even want to leave the house because you two made him think he's annoying and bothersome!" Doc growls. Red cowers back hesitantly, watching Doc. he quickly goes back to his house and shuts the door. Doc huffs and slams the door shut. it had taken him so long to convince Lightning he wasn't annoying or a burden when it came to his mental issues and now Red and Mack had probably screwed it up. he sighs and heads for their bedroom, Lightning is sitting on their bed going through the contacts on his phone, desperately looking for real friends to go with. he couldn't take Mater, he was his best friend, but he prefered country music. he could ask Sally and Mable to go, but neither of the two women really liked his type of music, they didn't mind it but Sally prefered Fall Out Boy and Nine Inch Nails while Mable rather liked older music, it was actually hitting him hard he didn't have any friends his own age. "find anyone?" Doc ask with a smile.
"there's no one to find." Lightning mutters. "besides Mater and Cal... I don't have any." Lightnin adds quietly. being an asshole in his younger years really ruined everything for him along with the fact that he'd been in hiding for so long because of Chick and hadn't had contact with anyone. Doc never meant for this to happen, he just didn't want the younger going alone.
"look, what if we just do something tomorrow together? just waste the tickets and... we could go race." Doc offers.
"no. I'm okay. my birthdays stupid anyway." Lightning mutters. Bolt nudges him with a whine. "its okay buddy." Lightning smiles reassuringly. Bolt barks and nudges him.
"we can do something, whatever you want baby. surely there's something you want to do for your birthday?" Doc ask, holding him gently.
"no. m'okay. like I said, my birthday is stupid." Lightning shrugs a little. "I mean I could go to the concert alone... or like do a contest or something and end up going with a couple fans." Lightning adds.
"no. to both of those." Doc frowns. "I don't want you going alone." Doc murmurs. "I'll go with you baby. I know you want to go." Doc assures.
"I don't want you there. you're going to get hurt or bumped and it's going to be loud." Lightning says. Doc holds him gently.
"okay baby, well, what do you want to do Monty?" Doc ask softly. "there has to be something you'd like to do for your birthday." Doc murmurs. Monty shrugs a little.
"I dunno." he mumbles. Doc frowns and gets up grabbing his phone to walk out of the room. Lightning watches him go and sighs. "I don't want to celebrate my birthday Bolt. whats the point of this? my friends think I'm a burden and Mack... he things I'm annoying... too much enthusiasm. I know what he means by that. I'm not stupid. I wonder if Cal thinks I'm a burden too." Lightning sighs. Bolt licks his face watching him.
"hey baby, would you mind if Maddie goes with you?" Doc ask, leaning against the door way with his phone to his ear.
"not if she likes the band." Lightning says. Doc nods once at him and walks away again. he comes back after a few minutes.
"alright you're going with Maddie, she doesn't really like the band, but. you can use the extra ticket to give Bolt his own seat. I'll drive you." Doc murmurs.
"you're just going to end up sitting in a car for hours." Lightning says.
"Smokey is driving Maddie, he says she's hard to ride with or something, so me and him will talk." Doc says.
"why doesn't Maddie drive?" Lightning ask.
"she hates driving." Doc shrugs. Lightning nods a little and cuddles to Doc.
