TWO

Y/N walked home from a long day of work. She was so ready to just get home and collapse onto her bed. Yet she had to go pick up some flour on the way home. Looks like there will be no free time today, she thought, pulling her coat tighter around herself.
Y/N was about to enter the shop when she froze: did she just hear someone shout? She closed her eyes and listened again. "Help! Help!" somebody was crying. Y/N ran toward the source of the noise. It seemed to be coming from an alleyway. Funny, every bad thing seemed to happen in an alley.
Everybody was ignoring the cry for help, so Y/N rushed in. She was greeted by the scene of two older boys in a fight, while a younger boy swung a stick at the legs of one of the boys. The little boy was the one yelling for help, and Y/N recognized as the little boy she bought the newspaper from yesterday. She watched as the little newsie was kicked to side, sent tumbling into a stack of crates.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Y/N shouted, successfully gaining their attention. As soon as one of them turned around, she recognized him. "Hey, you're the jerk that called me stupid!" she exclaimed. Y/N slowly walked towards him when her fear grew into anger, and her anger into rage. She balled her hands into fists and threw one towards the boy's face, effectively sending him stumbling back a few steps.
He was too shocked to move for a second, then stepped towards her. He grabbed the collar of her blouse, lifting her into the air. "Put...me...down, you buffoon!" she yelled. Y/N swept her legs into his, sending them both tumbling down to the ground.
He grabbed Y/N's arm and held her up, winding back his arm. Y/N braced herself for the blow, only to watch the other boy jerk her attacker back. "Let go of her!" he shouted. Y/N was thrown to the ground and landed on her arm with a loud crack.
She felt her body go numb, and then the pain flood through her. Y/N slowly sat up, cradling her hurt arm to her chest and gasping for air.
"I'm done with you rats anyway," the boy who has attacked her spat, before running off. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god," the other boy said, rushing over and crouching by Y/N's side. "I'm so, so sorry. Are you okay?"
Y/N took a deep, shaky breath before replying, "Y-yeah, I'm f-fine. Are you okay?" She looked at his black eye. That has to really hurt.
"No, you're not okay. Can you stand up?" the boy asked. Though he was genuinely concerned, he was still a stranger and Y/N didn't trust him. She nodded her head and attempted to stand. He must have seen that it was difficult, so he extended his hand to help. Y/N hesitantly took it, and he gently pulled her up.
"I sh-should probably g-go h-home now," she said, nervous around this stranger. "I don't mean to keep you from getting home, but I'm pretty sure your arm is broken, miss. You should have a doctor check it out. I can walk you there." Y/N slightly blushed when he called her "miss" and gave in. "Fine. I'll go," she said, a little too harshly, and started walking away.
"I'm Davey, by the way. And this is my little brother Les," he said. Y/N smiled. "I'm Y/N. And," she looked down at Les, "it's nice to finally have a name for the little con-man who charged me a nickel yesterday just to find out where the circulation building is." She laughed at Les' nervous face, and Davey' surprised one. "I'm sure Les can tell you about it later," she added.
Soon, the three were talking like old friends. Davey and Les walked Y/N home, making sure she arrived at her house safely. "Thank you two very much," she said, smiling widely. But as soon as she entered her house and closed the door, her smile faded from her face.
She broke her arm! Sure, she was excited about her new friends, but she had bigger things to think about. It was gonna be ten times harder to work at the cafe with only one arm. Would Y/N be able to still provide for her family?
She checked on her sleeping mother, planting a soft kiss on her forehead. Then she climbed into the bed she shared with her little sisters, falling into a restless sleep.
