Y/N spent almost entirely two days, running on less than an hour of sleep, tending to her little sisters. They had no energy to get out of bed, but the medicine helped the two a lot.

Y/N fell asleep sometime the next afternoon, because it was dark when she woke up. She lifted her head up from the bed and immediately jumped up when she saw that her sisters were missing from the bed. She gasped in shock and fear and stumbled around in search for them. There was a sharp piercing pain in her head and her stomach was nauseous, but she had to find her little sisters.

Suddenly, Y/N froze and listened. She heard giggling and someone running around. She ran down the stairs, almost tripping several times since the floor looked like it was spinning. Nobody was in their bunk, but she could shouting from downstairs.

She peeked down the stairs to see the bottom floor crowded with newsboys of all ages. After scanning the crowd, she saw Beth running around holding a pair of glasses, with a tall blonde boy chasing her around playfully. Sue was riding on his shoulders, laughing her face off. "Give me my specs, ya lil' rascal," he said, resulting in her giggling furiously.

Y/N wanted to yell, to run down and save her sisters from these strangers. But the voice of Jack came back into her head. "They'll be fine. Trust me." Something inside told her that she could trust these boys with her little sisters. Inhaling deeply, she slowly and silently backed up from the stairs.

She regretted taking that deep breath though, because it really tickled her throat. She held a cough in until she made it back to the small bed. However, once Y/N started coughing, she couldn't stop. She coughed until her throat felt raw, and she felt faint, so she decided to try to sleep. Almost instantly, Y/N fell into a deep yet restless sleep.

~~~~~~~
Beth was happy. Actually happy. She was young, and didn't fully understand how tragic her mother's death was. She just pushed the sadness and grief she felt for the past few days to the back of her head and focused on how happy this moment was.
Beth had met several boys, all with funny names like Finch and Racetrack. But her favorite was Specs. She thought he was fun and nice.
After a while, the older boys grouped together for different card games. Beth and Sue met a boy named Les who was only a little older than them. They had so much fun with him too! They played tagged and hide and seek until Sue was so completely exhausted.
Beth, being the good big sister she was, grabbed her little sister's hand and led her upstairs. They found their way through the dark room full of beds to the very back corner where their bed was. Y/N was fast asleep on the bed, coughing like crazy.
Beth was a little worried, after all, she knew that coughing like that usually is bad. She poked her big sister and whispered, "Y/N?" No response. She shoved her sister and said louder, "Y/N!" After no response, Beth's calls and pushes became louder and more desperate.
Memories from a few days ago started flooding back to Beth. She thought of when her mother had just died, when Y/N had ran out of the room and Beth started weeping, desperately trying to wake her mother up.
"Ma? Ma!" she cried, gently shaking her mother. She repeated her cries only to fail, repeating and repeating this useless cry until the doctor came and pried Beth off of her dead mother's body.
Beth grabbed Sue and ran as fast as she could out of the room and down the stairs, gulping down air to prevent herself from crying. They came stumbling down the stairs and around a corner when they crashed into a boy on a crutch.
Quick as lightning, he was back up on his feet (A/N: or should I say foot) and helped the girls up.
"You goils okay?" Beth, without a doubt that this random stranger would know her sister, said, "It's. Y/N. She won't. Wake. Up," gulping for air between each word. A look of dread passed over the boy's face but he quickly replaced it with a calm mask.
"Could you's bring me up to 'er?" Beth nodded and tried to remain brave as she led the boy up the stairs. "My name's Crutchie, by the way," he said, hoping to cheer them up. Beth just stared straight ahead, but Sue giggled. He smiled down at her and agreed, "Yeah, it's a pretty silly name, but just as good as any other." When the two girls didn't say anything else, Crutchie just kept silent.
Once they got to where Y/N laid fast asleep, Crutchie felt her forehead and looked at her nervously. Beth could sense his anxiety and couldn't help but break out in tears.
"Ay, please don't cry. It's gonna be alright. Ya know Jack?" After seeing her nod, the boy added, "I'm gonna get 'im, and everything's gonna be okay." He quickly hobbled out of the room and Beth flopped down on the floor in sorrow.
The happy feeling was gone.
~~~

Crutchie bit his lip as he felt how scalding hot Y/N's skin was. He tried to comfort the two girls the best he could without showing his own nervousness, and rushed out as quickly as he could to fetch Jack.

"Ay Jack?" he tapped on the boy's shoulder. "Something's wrong with Y/N. She's really, really sick and I don't know whatta do." Jack swiftly stood up and followed Crutchie back up the stairs.

~~~
Davey was sitting at the table when Jack and Crutchie left, and he couldn't help but notice how concerned they both looked. He followed Jack silently, not knowing what to ask.
They entered the pitch black room full of beds, and Davey felt his heart drop when he saw Y/N's frail form curled up in the bed. "Jack, you didn't tell me Y/N is here," he whispered fiercely.
Jack jumped in surprise and turned around to face his friend. "I didn't know you two know each other," he replied before turning back to Y/N and crouching by the bed. Davey watched as he felt the girl's forehead and seemed to be in deep thought.
"Do ya know if ya siste' has any of the medicine left?" he gently asked the little girls. The oldest girl paused for a second before nodding, and Jack stood up to face Davey and Crutchie. "I think we ought to let 'er sleep, then figure out what to do."
"Ay goils, you's can 'ave my bed tonight," Crutchie said, leading the two to the other side of the room. "I'm gonna go back down," Jack started walking towards the staircase before turning back to Davey. "You coming?"
"I think I'll stay up here," Davey said, thankful that the dark covered up his red face. Jack nodded and disappeared, and soon the entire room was silent. Crutchie was back downstairs, Beth and Sue were fast asleep, and Davey was anxiously watching Y/N sleep.
He thought she was absolutely beautiful. The way wisps of hair surrounded her face, slightly curled from the humidity. The way her lovely eyes were closed and how she rested her head on top of her hands. He noticed how her arm was still in its cast and thought of the day when he first met this girl, allowing the warm memory to envelope him.
He snapped out of his thought when suddenly he heard something, and watched Y/N shift uncomfortably. Davey quickly grabbed a small bench and pulled it up next to the bed. He noticed how she was curled into a small ball, her muscles tense and hands balled in fists. Y/N's face was in the shape of a scowl, and she looked like she was in pain.
He wanted to do something to help, but he didn't know what to do. Then, in a moment of inspiration, he remembered what his mother used to do to get him to fall asleep when he was sick. Davey reached out, ever so slowly, until his fingers gently grazed Y/N's forehead. Then, he cautiously stroke her forehead, running his fingers through her soft hair.
He continued this for quite a while, but however long he sat there stroking Y/N's hair he didn't know. It worked, though. Y/N was less tense, her hands weren't in fists, and she didn't look so angry. Davey smiled at her, glad that his idea worked.
Suddenly, he heard snickering behind him. He swirled around and saw Les standing just a few feet behind him. "What?" he whisper/shouted, his face burning with embarrassment.
Les glanced at Y/N and teasingly replied, "You know, Davey, you know." After a moment, he added, "I just wanted to see how you're doing. Don't worry, I'll leave you two alone now." He ran out of the room before Davey could say or do anything.
Davey felt his face heat up, but he turned back to Y/N and continue stroking her hair. It seemed to relax her, and soon she didn't look like she was in too much pain.
Davey felt a grin break out on his face, feeling happy to just be in that moment. That moment didn't last long, though, because within a few seconds Y/N was moving a bit and her eyes fluttered open.
