Dante was in the middle of collecting the black goo when he suddenly felt it – the eerie feeling that appeared and caused him to feel very uncomfortable.
As a siren, he was very in tune with the smallest change in his surroundings, and this time, he could feel that something in the air had changed for the worse – like something had woken up from its long slumber and ready to pounce on the remaining lives on the island.
He tried to dismiss the bad feeling when he heard someone enter the lab. He saw that Azusa was the one who entered and she was dragging the unconscious Toru with her.
"Did the talk not go well so that you have to drug him?" Dante quirked his eyebrow in question.
"You have to leave. Now. And please take him and restore his memory later." She ignored him and put Toru down on the chair and looked around the lab. "Where's Kai?"
"He's already there to talk to Dottore, but Dottore opens this portal until we all leave. What's the matter?" Dante became alarmed with how serious Azusa looked.
"You remember when I first came to the island and discovered traces of something unusual? Like a human but not exactly a human, but also not a monster or a demon? And after that we could not find anything?" She looked so worried that Dante became worried too.
Azusa was not someone who exaggerated stuff, and when she said she was worried, Dante believed that it must be dangerous. Hell, she could even control the whole village and their surroundings for the whole week – which he knew would be draining her energy faster than she could ever recover from. Thanks to Kai's help with the vitality serum, she was able to maintain the summons for this long.
But Dante also could see that she was already at her limit, and he wanted her to finish this as soon as possible.
"I just found out what it was. You know the reason we could not find the creature inside the room there?" She pointed at the prison. "It's because someone – accidentally or not – had let it escape and caused chaos on the island before someone – whoever it was – was trying to cover it with the fire that killed the residents." Then she pointed at the black goo with red-orange veins. "And I think that stuff was its excrement."
Dante quickly let go of the black goo that he was touching and wiped his hands on his pants.
"Nice. Could you at least tell me that before I touch it?" He shivered lightly, but Azusa did not laugh. Instead, she shoved Toru to Dante and pushed them into the portal.
"Go. Now."
"Wait, what about you?" Dante paused before he fully entered the portal.
"I'm going to look for Azuma first. He was moving south of here to find out about the strange statues that scattered all around the island. He thought it might have something to do with the demon and everything that happened."
"Got it. Don't take too long. I just felt a bad vibe in the air and you know what it means."
Of course Azusa knew what it meant.
It meant that they were running out of time.
Azuma watched from behind the thick tree trunk as the statue broke down one by one and the black smoke merged into one.
He only had basic training as an onmyouji before he ditched it because he preferred a more straight-up approach – which meant that he preferred using direct violence rather than the more complicated one.
He just hoped that his power was enough to terminate this one.
At least he knew that the rune that was engraved into the guns and the bullets were strong enough to destroy evil spirits – he had seen Noah do it.
However, after they merged, they didn't even look his way and left right away in a way that Azuma deduced that their metamorphosis wasn't complete yet.
Unfortunately, the direction that they took was to the north – where the secret lab was located.
Was something left there?
He quickly tried to reach Azusa via her comm device, but only remembered that she didn't wear it, then he cursed out loud and ran back to the direction of where his sister was.
After Dante took Toru with him, Azusa gathered all the shikigamis that she summoned and she felt more like herself again. It might take a while for her power to be back to normal, so she decided to get out of the lab to find Azuma first.
Outside, the weather was different from before when she entered the cave for the first time. But this was the actual weather of this forsaken island, she was just adjusting it to fit the stage.
She never met Toru's family in real life because they met after the tragedy struck. Of course after Toru opened his heart to her, she got snippets of his life on the island, and how everything happened in a flash, and how he regretted not giving more time to his father.
When she got pregnant, Toru was so happy and so sad at the same time, because he knew that his father would love to meet their daughter. Their lovely and beautiful daughter. And the thought probably filled his mind because he was not supposed to be on duty the night Dante and the others were sorting out the supernatural children's kidnapping case.
When he somehow got the temporary amnesia, she had this crazy idea for Toru to say goodbye to his family and friends, so she decided to do some quick recon on the island before she summoned most of the key figures and immersed herself in her role before Toru was sent there.
Anyway, somehow, something did not really click in this story.
For example, how could the monster escape confinement? It was the highest grade one when she saw it. But most importantly – who was the person that confined the monster here on the island?
She could feel the air here was different, like this place was actually out of this world instead of being a part of the normal world.
And secondly, she just had a thought that maybe someone had released the monster on purpose.
But what for?
Surely it was dangerous and no sane person would let it go.
Unless…
She suddenly heard the familiar sound behind her and she turned around to see Azuma was coming to her direction in a hurry while his voice was contorted and he said something, but she could not hear it.
Strange.
Why couldn't she hear what he said?
Then Azusa saw Azuma pointed to the direction behind her while looking panicked and taking out his gun – and then she realized that the air was actually feeling muffled because the monster was near and it caused the distortion in her surroundings.
She turned around to see a huge black shadow was looming behind her, and she could feel that this one was actually the culprit behind all those tragedies.
Instead of a monster, this was more like an apparition – a ghostly creature without a body – and she finally understood why everyone in the village died.
Not because this one killed them, no. It was because this creature was a condensed version of the seven deadly sins that would easily influence people to do the darkest things that they had imagined within their mind. Things that should only stay inside the deepest, darkest part of their heart.
She finally understood why everything happened and how she was also being influenced to set up this grand scale stage for Toru. Because a part of her felt that she was capable enough to pull this out – a part that had so much pride in herself and her ability.
Pride.
She bet her life that Chiaki had also been influenced by Lust, so she did what she did. Or she was probably just pure evil.
Azusa remembered that there had been a talk about the development of a high end resort on this island and that a wealthy businessman was trying to make the people sell their land to him.
Greed.
And everything that those people did only fueled this… thing more. It was probably in its dormant state before she did her thing to this island, and the resuming of the people's sins resulted in its resurrection.
Azusa knew that this was probably too late for her as she took out her shikigamis to make a kekkai around the black fog to restrict its movement, and with her other hand, she drew a series of complicated runes to open the portal.
"Azusa! What are you doing?" Azuma came and he tried to get close to his sister, but Azusa pushed him back.
"Stay away. I opened the portal for you, quick go inside." She finished the last of the runes while imagining the place that she wanted to go.
Home.
"What? I'm not leaving you!" Azuma looked so angry that his sister could even think that he would leave her alone. They were together since they were inside their mother's womb and there was no way Azuma would leave his sister alone with the monster. No fucking way.
"Listen. I need you to go first before I let this entity go. I can't restrain him while moving. You go first and I will be right behind you. Please, go."
Azusa had never lied to her brother before, but she thought that there would be a first time for everything. Unfortunately this was also going to be the last, and both of them knew it.
She smiled as she spoke again to Azuma.
"I promise I will return to you guys, besides, you know Arisu and Toru need me, right?" She tried to reassure Azuma but her brother could see through her lies.
"You know you're lying to me, and I will not leave unless you come with me." He pointed the gun at the creature.
"No! You can't do that! The rune bullet will damage my kekkai and I won't be able to contain him anymore!" She screamed at her brother and Azuma looked at her with anger in his eyes.
"We live together, we die together. Arisu will be fine since she has her dad, and Toru has everyone to help him. But you know I can't leave you alone like this. We've been together ever since we were created and I will definitely not leave you alone."
Azusa almost cried when she heard her brother's words. True they were very close and had their disagreement just like any other siblings, but this time, she knew that she had to save him.
"I love you too, brother." She smiled as the portal was opened behind Azuma. "Tell Arisu and Toru that I love them."
Azuma's eyes widened when Azusa suddenly pushed him back with such force by the shikigami she hid exactly for this purpose, and after he was safe, she quickly closed the portal and faced the black fog.
"Now, it's just you and me, pal. Let's continue til one of us can't go on anymore and I hope it will be you." Azusa took out a bunch of paper dolls and chanted a spell to make them surrounded the black fog. "I never fought directly against some creature like you before, but I guess there is a first time for everything, huh?"
With every bit of her strength, Azusa covered the black fog with her shikigamis and chanted a sutra to get rid of it.
