Chapter 8
When Cress got the comm from Iko and Cinder that she and Thorne were needed to help solve an emergency on Luna, she and Thorne rushed to help. They knew that Cinder was bound to find a few weird things Levana had done when she became queen.
But a Cress look-alike was especially odd.
Thorne stared at the woman that shared a face with Cress, and then back to Cress. He did this a few times before asking, "Is she using a glamour, Cinder ... or Cress? Whichever one of you wants to answer."
Near shock, Cress whispered, "No .. she has my face."
The woman in question seemed uncomfortable, but did not blush or redden. The cloak she wore was stretched over her shoulders and she kept her hands out of view behind the fabric. While her face was the exact same shape as Cress's and she had her eyes and hair color, she was much taller and her figure was more full.
Not to mention, she had a gigantic Lunar Soldier right behind her. Which was quite the stark difference from Cress and Thorne.
Holding down the full capacity of her alarm and disarray, Cress asked the question she hoped both Thorne and everyone else was thinking. "How exactly does she have my face?"
Cinder smiled weakly and stepped up to Cress, sort of ignoring Thorne. "Umm, she's kind of ... well ... this is Goldinia. We just found her."
"What do you mean found her?" Thorne asked, as confused as Cress. "Aren't there only about seven people in the whole world who are supposed to look a lot like you? Not like a carbon copy, I might add. How did you just find her?"
Cinder rubbed the back of her neck while the woman with Cress's face seemed interested in the floor. Her eyes roamed ever once in a while, but never came to meet Cress's. The Lunar Soldier at the woman's side placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, and she seemed grateful.
While Cinder was explaining to Thorne how they'd found her, them woman watched three of the coffins next to her with regret in her eyes. Cress looked at them, seeing each one housed a body. One that was sleeping, and would never rise to wake again.
It occurred to Cress that the woman knew those people, or that they could have even been her family. A wave of pity washed over her.
While Crescent recognized that the woman looked a great deal like herself, she couldn't help but notice that the woman had a resemblance to the men in the coffins. That Cress did as well. Two of them were Lunar Soldiers, and must have been twins with how much they looked alike. Aside from the scars and cuts that they did not have in the corresponding places on the other, they had the same faces, hair, and builds.
The other man's hair was more platinum blond that the others, while he shared similar features to them all. Close facial structure, though he was more lean and elegant than the others. He had the same uniform as Jacin, so he must have been a guard when he was alive.
It then occurred to Cress, that the reason why Cinder called Cress and Thorne here to meet this woman, was because Cress was related to her. She had such a resemblance to her that this was either a crazy coincidence or a relative that had been lost through an unfortunate series of events.
Out of pure curiosity, Cress inquired without thinking, "Are you my sister?"
The woman seized up, as did the soldier behind her. Thorne gave her a questioning face, like "Are you serious right now, Cress?".
Cinder was the one to finally give Cress so sort of response after some silence. "According to the DNA test results and the files I checked on Dr. Erland- Um... who was also Dr. Darnel, yes. Goldinia is your sister, Cress."
Goldinia looked like she was going to bolt. The man behind her took her hand and lightly squeezed, just as Thorne did when Cress was nervous or afraid. He was giving her some strength to stay, to face her eminent fear. Which must have been facing Cress, telling her that she was alive.
That the rest of their family is dead.
Somehow, a tear formed and fell down Cress's cheek. From joy or crushing agony, she did not know. She had a sister, but three brothers she would never meet. Her father was dead, but her family had still grown. There was buckets of reasons for Cress to be celebrating and mourning.
The last time Cress found out she had a family, they were doomed to be parted for the rest of her life. She lost them moments after they told her of their relation, and telling her that they loved her. She hadn't been able to say it back. For the passed year, it had eaten her up, knowing that she'd lost something she may never have again. Though her friends were a family she'd been searching for her whole life, she still dreamed of having her own.
And just because Cress didn't know Goldinia, and couldn't tell her that she loved her, didn't mean she couldn't try.
Tears streaming down her face, she flung herself at Goldinia and threw her arms around her. Making Goldinia stumble back. There was a brief moment of surprise, but is was quickly dissipated by Goldinia pulling her arms out of Cress's hold. Cress thought Goldinia was about to push her away.
Instead, Goldinia embraced her with such ferocity, such joy, it made Cress cry harder. So hard that she couldn't hear Thorne's questions about her sister, or see the man's weak smile. Not even Scarlet and Wolf's entrance to the room. She was so wrapped up in the idea that she had a sister. A sibling that she could bond with and love for the rest of her life. One that cared about her enough to hug her back. One that she could find common interests with.
One that could change her life.
...................
Goldi only wanted to make Crescent happy. She thought that would mean leaving her to continue on with her life.
Apparently, Crescent had other plans.
Getting tackled by Crescent was indeed a surprise. Goldi guessed Crescent had a more vast and caring heart than she'd suspected. Goldi was so jubilant she could have run all the way to Earth. Cad was right, Crescent could care about her and could want her to be a part of her life. The thought made her nearly incapable of containing her happiness.
Two more people entered the room, and her retinal scanner would not allow Goldi to ignore it. One was a female redhead, the other a tall male that was so large in size he must have been a Lunar Soldier. Goldi had no desire of focusing on those two right now.
She only wanted to think of Crescent.
She'd grown up, and if Goldi's retinal scanner had done the math correctly, Crescent was sixteen. She was practically an adult already. How had time flown by so fast?
Not only that, but the guy who'd come with her – Thorne or whatever – had to be a chaperon or guardian. Or maybe even a ... boyfriend. Goldi made a list in her head of questions to ask this man about his personal relation to Crescent. Then again, it could have been Crescent's choice to be with this person, and she deserved whatever she wanted. So Goldi would have to go easy on him.
That is, if Crescent cared for him that much.
Goldi felt Crescent's tears soaking through her shirt, and her instincts long dead were revived. Her pressed one hand to the back of Crescent's head and held her tightly. Out of pure habit, she hummed the tune of a song she hadn't thought about in years.
Like clockwork, as the song went on, Crescent's tears became fewer. The last time Goldi had held one of her siblings to console them as they were upset or afraid, was when Corvus and Cygnus were with her. Hiding from the Thaumaturge that was sent to take them away from their family.
Darien taught her that song, and since that day, she'd sung it whenever someone she loved was distraught or sad or afraid. She'd even sung it to calm Darien when their father died – supposedly. Or when she was running away with Crescent, and the poor baby could not stop crying to save her life.
At the memory, Goldi held Crescent tighter. Not matter what, she was never going to allow Crescent to be taken from her again. She would never allow her last bit of family to be ripped away from her. She would rather die first.
