Chapter 35
Mavis grabbed my hand, and I felt Biana's gaze boring into us. I felt a twinge of guilt, but immediately shook it off. She chose reputation over me, and I shouldn't feel guilty about moving on.
"So what do you plan on doing for the final semester project?" She asked looking up at me.
My heart raced a little, "It's a surprise."
"Oh really?" She asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yep!" I said popping the 'p' with a big grin.
"Okay Mr. Secrative," she giggled. "I got to get to class, see you at lunch?"
I hesitated, "Actually I was planning to sit--you know what? Never mind. Yes, I'd love to see you at lunch."
I didn't want her to sit with Sophie and all of them. Might as well spare the drama, and save Biana a breath.
It's time for me to change and meet people who'll actually appreciate me for me.
~~~
Biana POV:
I skipped the last few minutes of my last class, in order to sit down first at our table. I had to talk to Dex, had to apologize. It hurt so much seeing him smile at Mavis, he had that little twinkle in his eye he got when his brain was solving a problem or planning something special.
I kept raking my fingers through my hair, and I bit my lip nervously when he entered the room. I gave him a weak, shy wave that diffused when I saw him laughing with Mavis. He looked so happy, and I didn't want to ruin that.
So I didn't wave him over, and felt my heart shatter when he sat down next to Mavis; not giving me a second glance.
"Hey! You're hear early, where's Dex?" Sophie asked searching the cafeteria.
"Sitting with Mavis, his new friend. He seems to be enjoying himself," I said stabbing the plant salad on my plate viciously.
"You okay?" She asked softly, resting a hand on my shoulder.
"Does it look like I'm okay Sophie?" I snapped, throwing my fork onto my plate.
"Bi--"
"I've got to go, some paper I forgot to do or something," I said standing up and rushing out of the room.
I ran outside into the courtyard and leaned my body against the railing, shuddering at the cold breeze. I let out a shaky breath as I felt a few tears fall down my face, but didn't care enough to wipe them.
"Hey? You okay?" A voice called out.
I tensed, and wiped the tears, turning around to face Tam.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine. Just needed some fresh air," I lied with an easy, well practiced, fake smile.
He gave me a look, and said, "Come here."
"What?"
"Come here, I'm not asking again," he said ushering me closer with his hands.
I stepped forward, and he gave me a tiny hug. However, it was very awkward and not so much comforting.
"Feel better?" He asked.
Surprisingly, I did.
"Yeah," I sighed sinking deeper into his arms.
"Okay, that's enough," he laughed shakily, pushing me away gently.
I frowned.
"Well, I used shadows to manipulate the sun and give off a warm heat that makes people happier. And warm and fuzzy, that kind of thing. Too much makes you giggle and laugh at everything. Tried it out on Linh once," he shuddered.
I laughed, "Thanks Tam. I needed that. I didn't know you had it in you to hug people." I teased.
"Only a select few," he whispered, which sent a shudder through me.
FEW DAYS LATER
"Hey Mav," I said kissing her cheek.
She smiled, "Hey. Missed you yesterday. Where were you?"
"Working on my project," I smiled.
"Still won't tell me?" She teased.
"No," I laughed to myself.
Stina walked down the hall and scoffed, "Wow. Just-wow."
"What?" I asked confused, placing an arm around Mavis protectively.
"She didn't tell you?" She asked, narrowing her eyes on Mavis.
"Tell me what?" Now my attention was on the blonde girl.
"Um--"
"You're such a dirty snake. I can't believe you. I asked for your help, and this is how you repay me? Should've gone to Maruka," she sneered.
"What is she talking about?" I demanded, withdrawing from Mavis.
"She just has a massive crush on you, that's all," she whispered.
Stina responded by slapping Mavis.
"Hey!" I yelled, and she stared at me wide eyed.
"She has lied to you. I hired her to help me take down Biana. She repaid me by getting together with you, when she knew Marella had a crush on you!" Stina frowned in disgust.
"What did you do?" I asked darkly.
"We and a few girls planted notes in her locker, that's all. Nothing too serious. It wasn't like we threatened to kill anyone," Stina shrugged it off. "Just so you know, Mavis. You're on my hit-list."
Stina stalked away, brown curls bouncing.
I glared at Mavis and she tried to explain.
"Dex I didn't--"
"Save it, or better yet, why don't you write it on a note and stash it in my locker. I'll read it later," I said pushing past her.
"Dex please--" she shouted crying.
I didn't respond.
~~~
I stormed into Biana's one-on-one session for Multi-species studies.
"Dex?"
"You aren't supposed to be here!"
They both said at the same time.
I grabbed her hands, "Why didn't you tell me you were being bullied?"
"I-I wasn't," she muttered.
"This is outrageous! I'm getting the principal if you don't get out of here!" The teacher shrieked.
I ignored her, and slammed the crumpled up notes on her desk.
"Don't lie to me," I said evenly, as my eyes started to water.
"Where'd you get these?" She whispered blankly.
"Found them protruding from your locker. Why didn't you tell me?" I asked softly.
"You have five seconds to leave!" The teacher shouted.
"Okay, I'm going," I said, putting my hands in the air in an act of surrender.
~~~
Biana's POV:
Dex walked out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Mrs. Ruttingput rambled on, but all I could concentrate on was the pile of crumpled up papers in front of me.
Finally the bell rang and I hurried out of there, shouldering my backpack with one shoulder, while smoothing out the notes.
You're such an idiot. Did you honestly think anyone could love you? Look how fast Dex moved on. Quit sulking and face the fact that no one cares about you.
~~~
Just go to exillium already. No one wants you here.
~~
I know why Fitz left to stay with Alvar. He was too embarrassed to be seen with a waste of space like you, that he'd rather be seen with an ex-Neverseen agent.
Everyone was already gone and I stood there shaking, my knuckles white because of how tight I was holding onto the papers. I sank down to the ground and cried; does everyone hate me?
I dried my tears, shoving the papers deep into my satchel, and ran out of Foxfire. My eyes landed on Dex, who was leaning against a tree trunk messing with some gadget.
I started walking faster, but he saw me and ran over.
"Biana," he started.
I ignored him.
"Biana!" He said grabbing my arm.
I ignored.
"Hey! I'm talking to you! Okay, so could you please not be so stubborn for one second?" He shouted.
I stopped and turned to face him, "What do you want? Okay, I get it. You hate me, so can we just leave it at that?"
His whole face crumpled into one of hurt.
"I don't hate you. What makes you think that?" He whispered.
"Obviously I'm not good enough for anybody. I mean, have you seen me? I'm dramatic, and make everyone's lives more difficult. I'm nosy, stubborn, and selfish. Who would ever like someone like that?" I said, trying not to cry as tears welled in my eyes.
"When did this start?" he asked softly.
"Why does it matter?"
"Just, when?" He asked looking down at me.
I didn't look at him, "Two weeks before we broke up."
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asked, tears welling in his eyes.
"I don't know. It wasn't important. Besides, it opened my eyes. Okay, so it didn't matter. Can we drop it?"
Dex was getting emotional, and that made me uncomfortable. He should only ever be happy.
"You should've told me," he whispered.
"It doesn't matter!" I shouted.
"Yes it does. It matters cause you matter. You matter a lot to me, and what these idiots are saying isn't true," he said angrily.
"You're just saying that cause you're a wonderful guy. Okay, so can you just let me be?" I asked.
"Biana, tell me this. If I didn't care about you, why would I be like this? Why would I barge into your classroom, why would I wait for you, why would I be crying?" he asked as a tear fell.
I didn't say anything.
"You mean a lot to me, more than you'll ever know. And this is all going to stop, right now. I'm sure of it," he said darkly.
"Where did you put the notes?" He asked, drying his eyes.
"Threw them out," I lied.
Dex sighed, grabbed my satchel, and turned it upside down. An avalanche of crumpled notes fell out, along with my journals.
"Dex!" I shouted, while he shoved my notebooks into the satchel, and shoved it into my arms.
"You can't do this! This is my stuff," I shouted.
He ignored me, and threw a gadget on top. Instantly they incinerated into seeds.
"Why'd you do that?" I demanded.
"Because, it's not good for you to read that stuff. Not when it's just hateful lies!" he said, as he pulled off a shoe. He threw in another gadget which made soil appear, and he placed the seeds into his boots, pouring the water from his water bottle into it.
Instantly it grew into a tiny tree, it was dark and black. Papery, and on it you could read all the notes people had sent me. The ink was a blood red, and had an ancient calligraphy that made it ominous.
He placed his cape on the ground, threw a gadget onto it and it turned into a giant pot. Then he threw in the soil gadget, tossed in a handful of notes from his bag, grabbed my water bottle and poured it into it.
A big blush pink tree grew, much bigger then the first. The lettering of the notes were in a cursive light green ink.
"What'd you do?" I asked, now deflated of anger.
"This is my final semester project, I just changed it. There's much more love and beauty in the world than hate. Love and beauty will always be there throughout your whole life, where hatred comes and goes. Bye Biana," he whispered, leaving the trees there.
A/N: AWWW Dex found out about Mavis.
