Chapter 29

I woke up to the sound of Keefe gasping. Everything seemed fuzzy, until he came into focus. He was curled up into a ball, his hands tight fists pushing into his head.

"Keefe? Keefe, what's wrong?" I asked frantically trying to pull his hands away from his head.

He let out a loud moan, and I felt hopeless.

Then it all stopped, and slowly I moved his hands from his face. He looked up at me with wide, scared, blue eyes. He didn't say anything, but he was breathing heavily. His eyes scanned the room quickly, before settling on my face.

"Are you okay?" I whispered, my hands on either side of his face.

He hesitated, giving me an uneasy confused look, and nodded his head.

"Why wouldn't I be?" He asked slowly.

"You were, and then, what? How?" I rambled confused, not sure of what to say.

"Are you okay?" He asked eyeing me cautiously.

"You really don't remember?" I asked, now I was really freaking out.

"Remember what?" He asked.

"You-you just were screaming, and you were in a lot of pain. You were holding your head, like really tightly, or whatever. You don't remember any of that?" I asked concern lacing my voice.

"No, are you sure you didn't dream it?" He asked.

"Positive," I said, still analyzing him.

He looked at me for a long time before he said suddenly, "Gah."

And he was in the fetal position, bellowing in agony. His hands were cradling his head again, and this time the screaming didn't stop.

"Help! Somebody help!" I shouted at the top of my lungs, pounding on the crystal.

Keefe's screams got louder, and he actually started sobbing. I rushed back to him, kneeling at his side, trying to get his hands away from his head.

"Sophie? Sophie what's wrong?" I heard Dex scream.

"It's Keefe, he won't stop screaming," I rushed out, still trying to help him.

"Keefe? What's he doing--"

"No time to explain, I think he has the virus," I shouted.

I heard Dex pounding on his glass, screaming for someone to come and help.

"You're going to be okay, okay?" I asked frantically trying to hush Keefe.

 He just whimpered and clutched his head even tighter.

I concentrated on the love and happiness he made me feel, and I inflicted it onto him, trying to calm him down.

His screams died down to soft little whimpers, and I let out a sigh of relief. Then the screaming started up again.

Soon people in special gear entered the room, I completely forgot about Dex, who was screaming at the top of his lungs.

"SOPHIE NEEDS HELP!" He screamed over and over again, creating a lot of noise.

Then my door was opened, and they gasped.

"What's he doing here? Is he infected? How'd he get past security? Is that Keefe Sencen? I thought he was abducted?" Many voices spat out.

"Help him!" I demanded, now becoming hysterical.

"He's infected alright," Someone said.

 I closed my eyes, confused. How could he be infected? I wasn't? So how could he be?

Someone approached him and injected him with something. Instantly he calmed down and fell asleep.

"How'd he get infected?" I asked desperately.

"We don't know. You and Dex haven't shown signs of infection, maybe it takes longer for certain individuals?" Someone shrugged.

"But wouldn't I have to have it to be able to pass it on?" I asked.

"Look, I'm not a doctor. I'm just security," the elf said, leaving the chamber.

The doors shut with a loud echo, then I started screaming.

~~~
"Sophie. Sophie," a voice shouted.
My eyes fluttered open.
"Sophie Elizabeth Foster has been infected with the virus on October 12, 2017," they said to a camera.
"Is Dex okay?" I whispered.
"Yes, so far he hasn't shown any indication of having the virus. Turns out if you preform a blood test you'd be able to see. We had someone else enter Quarantine yesterday, Biana Vacker. Turns out she had the same bright idea as the two of you. She hasn't shown any symptoms, but we did a blood test and hers matches yours and Keefe's," the doctor.
"How about Dex?" I asked.
"We are preforming his now, they should be done soon," the female whispered.
DEX POV:
Turns out Sophie was infected. Great, three people I love and care about are dying because of me. I stared out feeling empty as silent tears fell down my face. This is all my fault. Then, to make matters worse, I saw a brunette with dark wavy hair walk into the room. Well, the people were dragging her.
"You don't understand! I didn't touch anything, I swear. I'm not infected, I couldn't be. I would've already have shown signs of infection, wouldn't I? This is a big mistake! Let go of me," she shouted.
"Biana," I whispered, and if on cue her eyes landed on me, and they softened.
"Dex," she said quickly. "I'm so--"
I completely lost it, tears cascaded down my face. Big fat wet salty droplets, and I was heaving.
She was shut into one of the cylinders, and she didn't say--or try to say--anything.
A few minutes later, I had calmed down. Then Biana was being lead out of the chamber.
"What? I haven't even shown any signs of being infected! How are you so--"
"It's in your blood. It matches the other infected," the guard informed.
She stayed silent after that, but I saw her tears.
"Am I going to die?" She whispered.
"We don't know," the guard spoke. He didn't even try to sugarcoat it.
This is all my fault, if I hadn't lost track of Bex, she wouldn't be dying. Then Sophie and Biana wouldn't have inspected the scene and got infected. Then Keefe wouldn't be dying for like the hundredth time.
Then, ever so slowly, I kept thinking and overthinking about it. Soon a freezing sludge trapped me, and I couldn't escape. I felt helpless, and then the frozen shards started stabbing, and embedding into my skin.
I ran away desperately, but I kept falling down,
                                                                                           down,
                                                                                                         down.
Sophie's pov:
The doctor came back in.
"How's Dex?" I asked immediately.
"He's clean. I think he's immune," the woman said.
"And?" I asked hopefully.
"And his mind isn't healthy. I think he's broken," the woman whispered sadly.
My heart dropped to my toes, as images of Dex flooded my mind.
"No, no that can't be," I shook my head.
"He isn't responding, and he's drooling with his eyes open. He keeps mumbling Biana and Bex's name. That's it. He's either burning hot or freezing cold. I'm sorry, but I really do think his mind is broken," the woman reasoned.
"I can save him," I said.
"We know, but we don't want to risk infection if he isn't immune," the woman shrugged sadly.
"Well you won't know for sure. And he really isn't alive with a broken mind. Please just let me help him," I begged.
"My hands are tied. I'm sorry," she said leaving the room.
A/N: SORRY! DON'T HATE ME! DEX HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE! ;)
