Chapter 21
Biana:
The dinner at Dex's house went really well. His parents were so funny, and it was cute how embarrassed he was when they told stories of him as a young kid.
"I had a wonderful time. Thanks for stopping by," Dex said as he walked me to the gates of Everglen.
"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," I smiled.
"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow at school," he waved.
"Yeah," I said, but neither of us made a move to leave.
I looked up in his periwinkle eyes and walked closer.
"You have something in your hair," I said as I noticed the flower petal.
"I do?" He asked astonished.
I reached up, grabbed it, and showed it to him, "Ta da!"
He laughed, which made his dimples show.
"I hate saying goodbye," I said after a few minutes of silence.
"Well then don't," Dex said.
"What I mean is I don't like it when you aren't around. I like how you always know exactly what to say to make me feel special, or important. Like I love Sophie, but when we were growing up, practically everyone had a crush on her or told her she was amazing. And I know it's not cool to be jealous of people, but I was! She was always herself and everyone loved her for it. She can be perfect and amazing without doing anything. Like I respect myself and think I'm a good person, but sometimes I just feel--"
"Like you're caught in someone's shadow?" Dex said.
"Yeah. Just like that," I said.
"I know exactly what you mean. When Sophie met Keefe and Fitz, she kind of forgot about me. She ended up spending a lot of time with them, and when I did try to be useful Fitz or Keefe would end up doing something ten times what I did. It made what I did do insignificant, so I know exactly what you mean," he said.
I gave Dex a hug, "I didn't know you felt that way. You'll always be important to me."
"I hope so," he whispered.
"There's no need for hope, because this is a fact. I'll always need you," I said.
He gave me a small smile.
"Goodnight Biana," he said.
"Goodnight Dex," I said with a wave and walked through the gates.
Sophie:
I woke up feeling much better.
"You alright?" Fitz asked.
"Yeah, sorry about the whole vomit ordeal," I said, my cheeks heating up.
"I'm just glad you're okay," he said, his piercing teal eyes made my heart beat a little faster.
I turned, "So how long was I out?"
"Thirty minutes," Fitz said.
"Oh okay, I guess I should go home then," I said awkwardly.
"Mandatory checkup first thing tomorrow morning!" Elwin ordered.
"Yes sir," I said with a solute.
"I'll take you home," Fitz suggested.
"You don't have to," I said.
"I want to."
"I guess dancing wasn't such a good idea, was it?" He laughed nervously.
"No," I chuckled.
"I was wondering, apart from the last events, if you wanted to go out again?" He asked hopefully.
"Fitz, I really don't know if I like you in that way or not. I don't want you to get hurt," I said.
"But that could mean you do," he said.
"I was definitely positive when we were younger, but so much has happened that I'm not sure if I still have those feelings," I continued.
"If you felt them once, you could still feel them again," he said hopefully.
"I don't want to hurt you Fitz," I said.
"You could never hurt me, just give me a chance, please? That's all I'm asking, not your hand in marriage," He pleaded.
"Okay, I'm free Thursday. Hope you have a goodnight," I said opening the door and closing it.
I saw Fitz do a fist bump, and frowned.
I was so sure I didn't like Fitz, but what if I still did have feelings for him?
I knew for a fact Luis was out of the picture. We really would only be friends. But what about Fitz?
What about Keefe?
~~~
The next day at school there was a big announcement during lunch.
"There will be a dance between this year's level five and those in the Elite Towers for matchmaking. There will actually be several for this month. One this weekend, one the following, and one after that. You must go with at least two different people for at least two of the dances. The last one is optional and your choice," Magnate Leto announced.
Students started whispering and soon the whole body was in an uproar of excitement.
I didn't dare to look at anyone at our table, for fear of them asking me. Well, Fitz asking me.
~~~
FEW DAYS LATER:
I was going to inflicting, and I hurried up the steps. So far no one has asked me to the dance. When I entered Councilor Bronte's room the bell rang.
"Sorry about--" I closed the door and loud music blared through the room. Confetti and streamers littered the floor.
"What is going on in here?" Bronte demanded.
The it started raining mallowmelt. However it all landed in a particular way so that it read:
Will you save the last dance for me? The one and only Keefe
I started laughing, and Bronte glared at me.
"I told them. I told all of them this was a bad idea. Kids and dances and proposing doesn't end well. It gets all messy and jealousy takes place and then somebody is miserable!" He ranted.
"Would you like some mallowmelt?" I asked.
He glared at me, and I put some in my mouth with a smile.
~~~
After my session with Bronte, I went to my locker and inside was a note.
Hey I was wondering if you'd go to the dance with me instead of hanging out on Thursday?
~Fitz
There was a bouquet of flowers and a box of truffles.
I had a small smile on my face, and I felt someone tap my shoulder. I jumped.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. So, what do you say?" Fitz asked with a hopeful grin.
"I'll save you a dance," I smiled.
Biana:
I marched over to Dex's locker with a stack of books on Alchemy and Technology. I got one of his technopath friends to open it for me. I lined up the titles like so:
Watts and bolts; human tech
Isosceles and different angles; ways to manipulate objects
Lictotine and other flammable liquids
Longimine and other liquids used to turn things to metal
Youthine and other herbs that help heal the mind
Ogre tech
Uptulic and other herbs to heal the body
Goblin tech
Ogre tech part two
Troll tech
Ogre tech part three
Troll tech part two
Hellium and other gases
Eternal history of how tech has changed
Dex's journal of ideas
Alchemy; the history of chemistry
Nickle and other metals
Crystal and other gems
Eternal history of how tech has changed part two
I closed Dex's locker. I couldn't wait for tomorrow.
(First letter of each word=Will you go to the dance)
~~~
I saw Dex go to his locker and his face was shocked when he opened it. He looked confused at first until he saw the marker I used to underline the first letter of the first book.
I knew all of this because I turned invisible behind him. I held up a sign that had an arrow pointing at me, saying with.
I saw his face turn from a confused frown to a smile, and he turned around.
"Surprise!" I shouted with a smile, and Sophie pulled a string which made confetti go everywhere.
"So, what's your response?" Sophie asked with a big smile.
"Biana will know in a few seconds," Dex laughed.
I looked confused until I turned around and saw that Dex had put posters all over the lockers leading up to mine.
It said:
Biana, would you like to go dancing with a Dizznee?
Sophie started laughing from the ironic situation.
"I'll take that as a yes!" I laughed giving him a hug.
"I was going to say the same thing," he smiled.
"Well I beat you too it!"
"How'd you get to me locker?" He asked.
"George," I said.
"Ah," he nodded in understanding.
