Chapter 19
Biana's POV
I was getting ready for my date with Dex, and I was so excited! I couldn't believe he asked me! It was so cute and--
FOCUS! You need to look amazing!
I finally found the perfect dress. I worked on giving my hair beach waves, so it wasn't crazy curly but had some volume. Then I put on some mascara, lip gloss, and a light layer of eye shadow. I tried to make myself look natural and light.
To pull it all together I put on a swirly pearl necklace that had a little tail on the back.
(I know the picture is supposed to be the front, but we're going to pretend that's what it looks like from the back)
I ran down the stairs, trying not to run into anyone, when I bumped into Fitz.
He gave me a once over and his demeanor darkened.
"Where are you going?" He demanded.
"Out into town," I said, swallowing the nervous lump in my throat.
"With who?" He asked impatiently.
"A friend," I said.
Fitz looked at me sternly and I broke.
"Ugh! Would you just let me be! I'm old enough to go places without you having to hover around me like I'm a lost bird! So yes, I am going into town with a boy. It's a date, if you have to know, and I'm going whether you like it or not!" I huffed, continuing my decent down the stairs.
I could feel Fitz' gaze burning a whole on my back.
"Bi?" He called.
"What?" I snapped turning around.
He had a small smile on his face, "You look beautiful."
I smiled and looked up at him, "I know you're probably dying to know who I'm going with. It's Dex, but don't hurt him yet."
"Is he picking you up?" Fitz asked.
My face paled, "Please don't embarrass me!"
He smiled, "But then I wouldn't be your older brother if I didn't."
I groaned.
He laughed, "I'll try not to ruin your reputation. But if you ever need me, I'm one call away, okay?"
"Stop being such a big worry wart! It's not like I'll loose my other arm too," I laughed, but Fitz started looking at my left arm nervously.
"Maybe you shouldn't go out--"
"I'm totally going out Fitz. I didn't spend three hours to look like this only to end up staying here."
Before Fitz could say anything mom shouted, "DEX IS HERE!"
I ran down the stairs with a silly laugh and smile on my face, and Fitz trailed behind.
Dex looked slightly uncomfortable, but he had a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
"These are for you," Dex said handing them to me.
I blushed and smelled them.
"I need to have a quick word with Dex," Fitz said impatiently.
My mom let out a laugh.
Dex gave me a reassuring smile and went up to Fitz.
"I know the drill, if I hurt her I'll be meeting your fist. I promise she will be home and safe at a reasonable time, and if need be I will jump in front of a fire ball for her. Also, I'll never do anything to intentionally hurt her. Are we free to leave peacefully?" He asked looking at Fitz.
Fitz fought to keep a straight face, "I still don't like him, but I guess..."
I punched Fitz in the arm.
"Shut up! You were totally impressed and annoyed that he created a speech so you wouldn't have to!" I laughed.
Dex and I turned to leave.
"Ah not so fast! Pictures!" My mom gushed.
Dex and I stood there for twenty minutes as my mom took pictures of him and I, and surprisingly of Fitz too.
"Can we leave now?" I asked with a pleading look.
"Yeah, yeah. Go ahead, and stay safe!" My mom added.
"I'm so sorry about that!" I said immediately to Dex.
His periwinkle eyes were studying me. I suddenly noticed he was a lot closer to me than I thought.
"You are beautiful," he whispered, grabbing my hand. His face turned a cute shade of pink.
I looked down, "Thanks."
My heart was beating a mile per minute, I didn't know what he was going to do. I know the date just started, but I wanted him to kiss me already!
Instead, he turned away, not even holding my hand. I glared at his hand, slightly annoyed.
With my luck, Dex saw.
"Did I do something wrong?" He asked quickly.
I face palmed, no not internally, I actually face palmed.
"I can't believe you saw that," I muttered.
"What?" He asked confused.
"Well, I was annoyed because you just told me I was beautiful, and you grabbed my hand," I said.
"Was that bad? To soon? Gosh, I'm so bad at this! I can't believe I thought," he sighed looking at his toes.
I felt really bad all of a sudden.
"No, it wasn't you. I just wanted you to hold my hand," I said sheepishly.
His head snapped up, "You did?"
I nodded.
"I am such a--"
"Perfect guy," I finished for him, while grabbing his hand.
He didn't say anything, but blushed.
"So, what do you have planned?" I asked.
"Well, I thought we could go to this place I found. It's private, so we shouldn't have to worry about any hold ups or things ending up weirdly," he said fumbling with a crystal.
I had a big grin on my face when he squeezed my hand reassuringly as we entered the beam of light.
We were by a sea front and Dex had set up a table. There were plants in a basket, which I'd later find out he'd prepare.
"Before we start, I just want you to know this is very new for me. I must sound like such a dork for saying this, but you, chances are, will be much better at this than me. I don't know what else to say..." he trailed off looking embarrassed.
"This is new for me too, and don't worry. I find dorky very attractive," I said with a small smile.
Dex flashed me a smile and grabbed my hand, whatever he was worried about was gone. It was like, he no longer was calculating everything. He was just living, and I felt my heart swell at this new side of him.
He quickly took off his shoes and socks, and I took off my shoes.
"Come on," he said with an adventurous look.
He grabbed my hand again, and started running. I noticed he rented some unicorns.
"I thought today would be a great day for riding," he said with a dimpled grin.
I guess he could tell from my face I was slightly uncomfortable.
"What's wrong?" He asked quickly.
"Well, I've never actually ridden a horse before," I admitted.
"Really? Well it's pretty easy," he said.
Dex, now much more confident, placed his hand on the small of my back.
"You're going to love Renegade and Nightingale," he rambled on excitedly as he lead me to the unicorns.
Nightingale was a dark brown horse with a white streak on its nose. It had a shimmering metallic brown horn.
Renegade was a beige cream horse with a silver horn.
"So which one do you want to ride?" He asked with a secret knowing smile.
"Um....I think Nightingale," I said after a few seconds of pondering.
Dex, keeping his hand on the small of my back, led me to the brown beauty.
"Okay, so I'm going to lift you up and your going to place your foot in the stirrups," He said pointing to the triangle foot thingys.
"So you place one foot on the one side, and then you swing your leg over and I'll help you get into the other," he smiled.
I studied the tall creature.
"Okay, I think I can do this," I said.
"I know you can," he added with a small smile.
"Ready?" He asked.
I nodded, and then I felt Dex's arms encircle right below my butt, and he lifted me up.
I was shocked at how quick he did it, and quickly regained my composer. I stuck my one foot in the stirrup and quickly hoisted myself over.
Maybe a little to fast, cause I missed the seat, and started falling.
Dex grabbed me and helped me study myself.
"You alright there?" he asked, concern laced in his voice.
I couldn't speak because of how cute he was, so I just responded with a um hm. I noticed Dex was still touching my leg, and he noticed too. He quickly guided it to the other stirrup and then let go. I felt suddenly saddened that he wasn't touching me anymore, but then screamed at myself to get a grip.
Dex then, with no trouble, swung his body over the beige horse and was mounted.
"Okay, so if you want it to stop you need to pull back on the reins," he said and showed me.
I nodded.
"Okay, and if you want the horse to go you need to just give it a little squeeze with your feet," he said and demonstrated.
"Now you try," he said.
"Me?" I squeaked.
"Yeah you," he let out a breathy laugh.
I cringed at my stupidity. It wasn't that bad, I got it to go and stop.
I had a big smile on my face.
"Okay, now if you want it to turn, you have to pull to the left and the right, but go more outwards away from you," he said and showed me.
"Okay," I said looking up at him with a nervous smile.
"Don't worry, I'll be with you the whole time," he said reassuringly.
I did it, and I cheered putting my hands in the air.
Before Dex could say anything, my horse took off. I only was able to recover fast enough to get my one hand around the reign. I started screaming as the horse started sprinting and jumping, I was loosing my hold.
"DEX!" I shouted, feeling my body bounce up and down like a sack of potatoes. My underwear was probably showing, but at the time I was too worried about dying to realize.
Dex pov:
I saw Biana's horse take off right when she squealed. It was galloping like its life depended on it. I quickly got my horse to start running, and when I was close enough I hoped off, very gracefully might I add. I sprinted to where Nightingale was bucking, clearly out of control.
"Wow there boy!" I said placing myself in front of the horse.
"Dex look out!" Biana screeched while I was trying to grab the reigns in order to calm the horse down.
What I wasn't expecting was getting hoofed in the face.
I feel down on my butt, feeling pins and needles on the side of my head till it went numb. It was all fuzzy and it felt like I was underwater.
Then I felt a rush of energy as I heard her screams and I realized she was crying. Quickly I jumped up, a little wobbly, and ran in front of the horse again, this time successfully grabbing its reigns.
"Easy boy, relax," I cooed as I rubbed its nose.
The horse slowly started to calm down and I helped Biana off of the horse. She had tears streaming down her face and she looked at me with relief in her eyes.
Surprisingly, she threw her arms around my neck and squeezed me. I was completely out of my comfort zone, but when I realized she wasn't going to let go, I placed my one hand on the back of her head and the other on her lower back.
I rubbed her back up and down soothingly and whispered, "It's okay. I got you, you're safe."
Biana's sniffles slowly subsided and I kissed the top of her head, and I felt myself become embarrassed. I rebuilt the wall I had around my feelings, realizing what I had just done.
We stopped swaying and she looked up at me with her sparkling teal eyes.
"Your head!" She gasped, bringing a hand to her face.
"What? I'm fine," I said waving it off.
She placed a tentative hand on the side of my face and I stopped breathing. All her attention was on the side of my face, and my heart started beating uncontrollably fast. My whole body was aware of where her hand was, and I couldn't help but notice how beautiful--how beyond beautiful she was.
"Your bleeding," she said meeting my gaze.
"I am?" I asked.
"Yeah, here, I've got a band aid," she said.
I felt her tiny hands use a tissue, that she spat into, to clean the dirt, and then she placed the band-aid on top. I had bent my head and knelled a little bit so she could reach my height. Then, shockingly, she stood on her tippy toes and gave a lingering kiss on the band-aid.
"There, good as new," she said looking into my eyes.
I could tell she wanted me to kiss her, and I really wanted to, but I was afraid.
Biana POV:
I gave Dex's band-aid a kiss, and looked back into his eyes. They looked a darker shade of blue, but it was probably just the lighting. We stared at each other, and right now I wished I was a telepath. My mind was practically begging Dex to kiss me. I wanted him to do it so bad, and I could tell he wanted to also.

So what was the problem? Was I not kissable?
I went to stand on my tippy toes, cause it was now or never. I'd either find out now if he liked me. So, I stood up, lifted my head, and right when I was about to kiss him he turned his head.
I quickly sank back down and looked away. To say I was crushed was an understatement. I felt deflated, my heart dropped to my toes, and I wiped my eye quickly; begging myself not to cry. I don't think I would've forgiven myself if I had.
"Are you hungry? I have some food," he said awkwardly.
I snapped out of my daze and feigned a smile, "Yeah that'd be great."
He didn't try to hold my hand again as we walked the unicorns back. The lump in my throat was getting bigger and bigger.
"You alright?" He asked trying to break the silence.
I nodded, and he didn't ask me anything after that. I saw down in one of the chairs and faked a smile as he awkwardly shuffled around me towards the plants he had gathered. Quietly, he started preparing the dishes after roasting a plant for five minutes.
"Here you go," he said with a smile.
"Thanks," I added, and started to cut the roots on my plate, trying to detach myself from my emotions.
"Biana," Dex trailed off, and he stopped cutting his food.
"It's fine," I said not looking up.
"I didn't--"
I started cutting the plate harder, "It's fine Dex!"
"Look I--"
I slammed the silverware down, "I'm fine!"
I felt him staring at me and I looked down, realizing I broke the plate. He stood up and I started picking up the pieces.
"Oh, um, I'm sorry. Do you have a bag?" I said trying to distract myself from the tears that were forming.
"Biana," he said quietly.
I stared at the plate and stopped what I was doing. I could feel him walking closer towards me, and knew he was right behind me.
"I didn't mean to hurt you," he said after an agonizing long period of silence.
"Well you didn't," I said but my voice cracked as the first of many tears cascaded down my cheeks.
I could tell he was hesitating, and I wanted him to do something! I knew I was being a baby, but it really hurt. I thought he liked me. And it would've been fine if he didn't completely shut me out afterwards, like I was a stranger you meet for the first time. I understand he may have not been ready, but he gave me the cold shoulder afterwards. Pretending nothing had even happened, and that he was just by himself.
It was silent for a really long time, it was like time stood still. We didn't move or say anything.
"Biana," he whispered again.
"I should go," I said surprisingly.
"Oh," he said solemnly.
I didn't turn around, and started walking away. I took a quick glance, slightly hoping he'd chase after me. But he was still in the same spot he was before, except looking at the ground.
I sighed, wiped my tears, and entered the beam of light.
"Hey, how was your date..." My mom trailed off as she opened the gate.
"I almost got killed by a horse, and my date was a complete jerk afterwards, I arrived home early, what do you think?" I asked angrily storming past her.
She didn't say anything, and I ran into the house. I didn't even give Fitz a second glance as I rushed up the stairs, slamming the door. I plopped onto my bed and starting sobbing.
I heard a hesitant knock on my door.
"Go away Fitz," I said after a few seconds of calming my sobs down.
"It's not Fitz," I heard my mom sigh.
"Can I come in?" She asked.
"No," I said, even though I wanted her to.
She opened the door anyway, shutting it behind her. Sitting on my bed, she wrapped her arms around me.
"What happened? He was such a sweet boy," Mom asked, voice laced with concern.
"It was amazing," I said through my tears. "I had a wonderful time."
"Well, then what's with all the tears?"
"Well, he saved me from a unicorn that lost control. He was so sweet and kind, but I went to kiss him--"
"Are you sure that's what the--"
"Mom, it was the right time. It was the best time actually, and I knew he wanted to kiss me. Well, I thought he did. I went to kiss him and he turned his head. Then after that he could barely talk or look at me. He was all reserved, as if," I started crying again. "as if I were a stranger."
My mom didn't say anything.
"I feel like such a mess," I sighed.
"Honey, I understand how this really hurt you. But have you ever wondered how Dex thought about all of this? He's completely new to all of this just like you. Can you understand he may have been nervous? Or unsure about himself in a setting like that? He might be really insecure--"
"Mom, right now I just need you to hold me and tell me everything will be okay," I said cutting her off.
"Everything will always be okay, you don't need to worry about that," she said rubbing my back.
I sighed finally content, when I remembered something.
"Fitz!" I shouted, my eyes wide, bolting out of my bed.
My mom shot up in surprise, but I was already out of the house by then and shouting "Slups and Burps!"
I ran into the shop.
"Biana--"
I ran past Kesler and up the stairs.
"Dex is in his room," I heard him mumble.
I slammed open his door, and I heard something drop as he bolted up.
I hugged him quickly.
"What are you--"
"No time, an angry Fitz will--"
I heard Kesler shout, "Dex! You have another guest!"
My eyes got wide, and Dex looked at me confused.
"He is going to kill you, do you understand? He's super overbearing!" I explained shaking Dex's shoulders.
"Oh, well what do you think we should do?" He asked slightly amused.
I groaned and pulled out my pathfinder, and pulled him through the light right when Fitz opened the door.
~~~
We were back at Everglen and I ran to the leap master, shouting Mysterium.
~~~
"We should be safe here," I said breathlessly.
"Can we actually talk," Dex said rubbing the back of his neck.
"In a sec, lets sit over there," I said pointing to a clearing.
We sat down in the grass and I watched him.
"This is going to sound so cheesy and stupid--"
"Dex, what is it?"
"I really wanted to kiss you. You're so amazing, and I just--. I'm not the typical guy girls choose to date. I'm sort of like the last resort. And I'm scared. I'm so scared you're going to realize I'm not that interesting, or great, or--"
I cut him off by kissing him quickly.
"Dex, you'll always be fascinating to me," I said, my heart swelling.
I don't think I even finished my sentence before he kissed me passionately. It was soft in the beginning, uneasy. Then Dex's hand was around my waist, and he was kissing me more urgently as he was gaining confidence.
We broke apart and I hadn't realized how close we were until I felt Dex's protective arms around me as he placed his chin on top of my head.
"You're like a roller coaster," Dex whispered.
I felt him kiss my head and I looked up at the starry night. There was no one there except for a few people who closing up for the night.
I turned my head and started kissing him again. His touch made my stomach irrupt in butterflies.
"I really like you, like a lot," he mumbled in between kisses.
"Just shut up," I whispered as my hands played in his hair.
My sides felt like they were on fire cause Dex's hands ended up there.
"That wasn't so bad, now was it?" I asked with a smile.
His whole face lit up, "I've never been better."
"Dex I think I've--"
But I was cut off by a grizzly bear Fitz.
"First you make her cry, and then you kidnap her? And to make matters worse you start kissing her like she's enough now," he said exasperated, crossing his arms.
"It wasn't like that, I pushed him to do something he wasn't ready for at the time," I said standing up, dragging Dex with me.
Dex was about to say something and I shushed him.
Fitz looked conflicted.
"Can you please leave so we can continue confessing our feelings?" I joked.
His nose scrunched up at that.
"Dad wants you home in five minutes," he reasoned.
"Bye Fitz," I said waving.
"But--"
"I'll see you in five," I said ignoring his protests.
He light leaped away quickly.
"Finally, he left," I laughed.
Dex looked at me, "Your absolutely beautiful."
"That's the second time you called me beautiful," I whispered.
"Keep counting all you want, cause it won't be the last," he said cupping my cheek.
He gave me a soft, gentle brief kiss.
"Dex I think I might be in love with you," I whispered nervously, not looking at him.
"Good, because I think I'm in love with you," he spoke softly.
"Why didn't you look at your list?" I asked randomly. It had been on my mind a lot lately.
"Cause I don't need a list to tell me that you're my number one," he whispered.
"But you don't know that's what it says," I said.
He placed my hand on his heart and I could feel it beating a mile per minute, like a hummingbird's wing.
"That's how I know. I don't need some piece of paper to tell me how I feel," he said.
I gave him one last hug, and he held me close craning his head down.
"I really don't want to, but I have to go," I said holding him.
We pulled away and Dex light leaped to my house.
"Sweet dreams Biana, and don't be afraid to call me if you ever need anything. Like to talk," he said.
"Or if I'm having a bad day?" I asked.
"Especially if you're having a bad day," he laughed.
I smiled, "Goodnight Dex."
"Sweet dreams Biana," he said waving goodbye.
I entered my house and took a peak out the window. Dex was still standing there, except he looked triumphant.
I smiled and let out a little giggle.
