James
Roslyn turns around calmly and exits the house without another word. I turn to my sister. She and I are thinking the exact same thing.
Shit.
I follow Roslyn even though it is quite clear she wants to be alone right now. But being alone is the last thing she needs right now. If me being there can't cheer her up, it can at least mean I'm there to protect her if something goes wrong.
She's vulnerable right now. It would be the perfect time for someone to lure her into the woods and kill her quietly and effortlessly.
But I'm not going to let that happen.
As soon as Roslyn sets foot outside, she immediately turns around and bumps into me. What scared her into coming back? I hold her in my arms as she shields her face with my chest and I survey the area.
Now I see what changed her mind.
A news van sits outside of her house and a reporter sits on the sidewalk, waiting for her to show her face. I guess they are looking for a statement from her like the lady on the tv said.
I pull Roslyn back inside before the reporter can spot her and help her sneak out the back door. From there, we run across my back yard until we safely reach hers. She slams her fist on the glass door, calling out to her parents to unlock. Her father angrily pulls back the dark colored curtains, ready to yell at whoever is banging on the door with such aggression. His expression changes upon seeing how terrified daughter through the smudged glass.
He quickly fumbles with the lock and pulls his daughter inside, clinging to her as if this is the last time they will ever be able to hold each other.
I enter and close the door behind me, making sure it is securely locked before I shut the curtains. Roslyn's mother enters the room, sharing the same terrified expression as her teenage daughter.
I don't have to read any of their minds to know they are scared about what might happen next.
"I've already called the detective and begged him to fix this. Maybe he can convince them they've made a mistake. He doesn't know how the press got a hold of your name." Her mother explains, running her fingers through Roslyn's messy hair.
"It's too late now." Roslyn says slowly as if she has already been defeated. She seems calm but I know that she is anything but. Roslyn is currently harboring a boatload if emotions inside that little body of hers. She doesn't know what to do with them all. She is going to explode if she can't figure it out soon.
I don't want that to happen. I have to help her.
"I'm going up to my room. Goodnight." Roslyn kisses her parents' cheeks although it is barely even noon. She glances at me. She doesn't say it but she wants me to follow her up there.
She closes the door behind me in her bedroom and spins around quickly, grabbing on to my arms and shaking me. "Promise me you won't ever kill me." She begs, her calm expression quickly escaping her face.
"It's not me you need to worry about. I've already told you, we don't kill humans. We only eat deer." I reassure her. She seems to have forgotten.
"No, I don't mean you eating me. I mean," she pauses. "Well, if something happens and I die or whatever, and you have a choice to save me or something-I don't know it seems crazy but I've seen it in that movieTwilight. If you can save me by changing me into a vampire, don't. Please don't do that to me. Please. Just let me die if I'm meant to die. Just let me be dead."
"But-" I try to argue.
"Promise me." She begs, her eyes sparkle as she looks into mine. "Please."
"Okay." I give in. If that is what she really wants, I guess I can respect her decision. Despite how much it hurts me inside to know that this may be a very real situation that could happen, I need to respect her wishes.
"Say it. Promise me."
"I promise."
Author's note: hmm foreshadowing? Do you think if Roslyn is killed that James would ignore her wishes and change her into a vampire anyways? Or do you think he would honor her and not do that to her?
