My mom has been running around the house all afternoon trying to set up for the dinner tonight.
I don't know why she even invited them over. I just got back from the hospital. Things around here have been crazy enough without some dinner party to throw.
I grab the stack of plates she had out on the counter and bring them over to the table to begin setting up the spots at the table. The least I could do is help her set the table.
"Oh no, honey, please sit down. You shouldn't be doing anything crazy. You could reopen your stitches." My mom grabs the plates from me and holds them in her arms.
"Relax Mom," I say as I grab the plates back from her. "I seriously don't think setting the table up will pop open my wounds." I set the plates down and begin laying them out in their places. I grab the silverware on the top of the pile and lay them in their correct spots beside the plates. "See? No open wounds."
My mom laughs quietly as she turns to continue cooking whatever it is she has been working on since I woke up. I just hope it tastes good. I would hate for her to spend her whole day cooking just for it to turn out to be disgusting.
My dad walks in the door and kisses the op of my head. "Hi princess." He smiles and then kisses my mom on the lips.
I smile as I watch their interaction. I hope to find a love like theirs someday in the future. "Hi dad. How was work?" I ask him as he sets all of his things down.
"It was fine, what's with all this?" He asks, pointing to the display we have set up in the kitchen. I guess he didn't know mom is hosting dinner tonight.
"Mom invited the new neighbors over for dinner tonight." I explain, waiting to see his reaction. I can't remember the last one we had someone over for dinner.
My dad looks at my mom with wide eyes. He is just as shocked and confused as I am about this.
"You want to socialize? With new people? Who are you and what have you done with my wife?" He jokes, grabbing her arms and pulling her in close, kissing her again.
"Ha. Ha. Very funny Todd." My mom fakes a laugh, sending me and my father into a fit of real laughter. She returns to her cooking. I think she is almost done. I can smell the deliciousness coming out of the pot. I can't wait to try it.
"That smells so good honey" My dad holds his head over the pot, his glasses fogging up with the steam floating out of the hot food.
My mom grabs the pot off of the stove and pours the excess water down the drain and then dumps the food into a dish.
"Mom, that looks amazing!" I say as she places her creation on the table in front of me, dishing it out and making it look as appealing to the eye as possible.
"Why thank you, I slaved on it all day. I just hope they like it." My mom places her hands on her hips and turns to look at me. "I hope you are okay with all of this." She places her hand on my cheek.
I nod. "It's just a dinner party." I can handle one dinner with strangers. It's fine. She is really overreacting.
"Yeah, but so close to your attack? I was wrong to do that to you honey I-" she begins. I grab her hand and squeeze it, pulling it off of my cheek.
"It's just a dinner party." I repeat myself. "Besides, it doesn't even hurt that bad anymore. And it's nothing a little makeup can't cover up. I'm not insecure about it at all." I smile, hoping she will stop feeling guilty over deciding to invite people over for dinner.
It's not that big of a deal to me, really. I don't mind. I am not going to let this attack define me. It was pure chance that I was attacked that night. I am not going to let it change my life for the worse.
It can only change my life for the better.
The doorbell rings. The three of us turn our eyes to the closed front door. It is time.
"They're here!" My mom smiles and rushes over to the door to start the party.
Here we go.
I have absolutely no idea what is about to walk through my front door right now. They could be serial killers for all we know. My mom is crazy for inviting them over here tonight.
AN: what do you think is about to walk through that door?
Also, here's Roslyn!
