20: Darkness

Ida dropped the bags of shopping she had brought and rushed over to Katya.

"What the fuck happened?" She shouted as she looked at Jacob's disfigured head.

Katya couldn't speak. She just cried hysterically and clung onto Ida after she helped her out of the boat.

"Did you do this Kat?" Ida shook Katya gently. She looked as if she was going to be sick.

"Elsa did it." Katya mumbled in between cries.

Ida took Katya aside and away from Jacobs dead body. "Look Kat I know you're not lying about Elsa's ghost haunting you but I haven't seen her myself. I think you need help honey. I don't know if you did this in a fit of rage because you were angry with him but we need to get rid of the body."

Everything Ida was saying went through one of Katya's ears and out the other. She felt distraught and sick at the thought of what had just happened. Her fiance was dead and at her hands. She felt a twinge of pain sear through her stomach and clutched onto her bump.

"Go inside and sit down. I will deal with this." Ida instructed Katya as she picked up the discarded shopping and hurried into the house.

Katya followed behind and sat down on the sofa. Time seemed to stop. She zoned out and couldn't hear a thing. Ida was talking to her but her voice was less than a whisper. Katya felt as if her whole life had come tumbling down on her. Jacob was dead and she couldn't get her head around it. Black shadows flew in and out of her vision and a strange ringing noise brought her back to reality.

How long had she been sitting there for she didn't know. It was getting dark outside and Ida still hadn't come back inside the house. Katya struggled to her feet and waddled to the front door. She saw Ida bringing the boat back to shore. Where had she been?

Ida's top was soaking wet and flecks of blood covered parts of it. She walked up to Katya and pulled her in for a hug.

"I disposed of his body far out at sea. I used the blanket from the spare room to wrap him up and got a load of pebbles and stones to weigh him down." She said in Katya's ear.

Katya burst into tears and thanked her sister. Not just anyone would have done that for Katya. Suddenly she no longer felt alone.

"What are sisters for?" Ida whispered.

***

The next few days Katya spent in bed either sleeping or crying. Ida was planning on going home in a couple of days but she knew she couldn't leave Katya here in her state and being pregnant. She told Katya that once she gave birth she would have to go home. Katya nodded in agreement but was secretly terrified of being on her own with whatever was inside of her.

She received a call from Jacobs boss enquiring of his where abouts but Katya couldn't talk and put down the phone. Thinking of him made her cry even more. She missed him.

Later that evening Katya had an excruciating pain in her stomach and her waters broke. Ida rushed her to hospital where she was instantly admitted to the maternity ward. As she lay on the bed she began to shake and convulse uncontrollably. The nurses had to strap her arms and legs down so she didn't harm herself or anyone around her. The tight leather straps bit into her wrists and ankles as she spasmed and screamed. Ida watched with her hand covering her mouth in fear. Katya looked possessed and one nurse even crossed herself.

The next hour was a painful ordeal for Katya. She felt as if she had no control over her body even though her ankles were no longer strapped down and her arms were free. Whatever was inside of her was desperate to get out. Two nurses held either leg down as she squirmed in agony whilst the doctor peered inside of her.

"The head is out!" The doctor shouted over Katya's cries.

The nurses told Katya to push twice more as the baby was almost there. Katya panted and cried as she pushed as hard as she could. One nurse helped to ease the baby out and joyfully declared that Katya had a little girl.

Katya was exhausted and dizzy. She could just about make out the doctors and nurses rushing around beside her before her baby was positioned in her arms.

"Congratulations sis." Ida said as she wiped away a tear.

Katya looked down at the little baby girl and felt a wave of emotion wash over her. She was gorgeous. The baby let out a small cry as she opened her large blue eyes. She looked just like any normal baby would and Katya was thrilled that she wasn't a monster.

She decided to call her Anya.

***

Four days later Katya sat at home ogling over Anya as Ida packed her bags. Katya was sad to see Ida go but was looking forward to spending time with her new baby.

"Once his work notice Jacob has been missing for a while people will ask questions and the police will come Kat. You need to decide what you're going to do." Ida sighed as she gently hugged Katya goodbye.

"I know. I'll think of something. I'm going to miss you."

"I'm gonna miss you too. Stay safe Kat. And you little miss." She tickled Anya's cheeks and she gurgled.

Ida got into her car and waved goodbye. Katya waved back as she watched the car dissappear down the lane and out of sight.

***

The next few weeks were the worst weeks of Katya's life. Her insanity had hit it's peak and she started to hallucinate. The creepy black shadowy monsters followed her around the house and watched her intently where ever she went. She hadn't left the house since she said bye to Ida.

She hadn't contacted work to tell them when she'd be back because she couldn't face going out anywhere without Jacob. Losing him had hit her like a ton of bricks. Anya was the only thing keeping her going. She was losing the house too as she had no money to pay rent and she guessed the police would be coming round to visit her at any moment.

Katya couldn't stand another second living at her home without Jacob any longer. The time had come for her to step outside and go back to her childhood home. She picked up Anya's bottle and favourite teddy and made her way over to the abandoned house.

She had no sense of time anymore as it didn't seem to matter. Her clothes were soiled and her whole body felt weak. She didn't know how much longer she could go on for.

As she entered the home that housed her for the first years of her childhood she felt a sense of calm that she hadn't felt for a long time. It was as if the house was welcoming her home although she had experienced many terrifying events there.
She walked into the lounge and sat down against the cold wall. The ground was dirty and cockroaches scuttled around her. Anya was fast asleep in a pink blanket and Katya held her close and began to cry.

She sat there rocking for hours. Her whole life had been broken in two. She had lost her fiance who was the love of her life. Her sister who was her rock had gone home. The only thing she had was Anya. Katya cooed over her and managed a weak smile.

Outside police sirens rang out in the distance. Was she imagining them? Katya heard them and rocked back and forth faster. Thoughts raced through her mind. She knew that it would all be over soon and if the police found out about Jacob from him being absent from work then they would deem her as an unfit parent and take away her baby. As if Anya had read her thoughts her eyes opened. They were now as black as the night sky. She stared up at Kaya and giggled.

Shadowy creatures crept out of the walls and ceiling and flew around in front of them both. A black entity crawled out of the fireplace and as it stood up Katya recognised it. The demonic creature towered over her and reached out a long black arm. Its eyes were glowing a deep red and it's claws beckoned her. Maybe Katya belonged here.

The sirens grew louder and the noise made Anya cry. Could she hear them too?

"Ssssh. It's okay baby." Katya said as she tried to calm Anya down but she didn't stop.

The creature opened its mouth and revealed a huge mouthful of discoloured teeth. It was grinning at her.

Anya's cries pierced through Katya's ears at the same time as the sirens roared. Katya felt as if her head was going to explode. She looked down at Anya again and saw the sinister expression on her babies face. Two red orbs glowed in her black eyes and long sharp teeth appeared in her gaping mouth.

Katya stared at her daughter and then looked up at the entity standing before her. She was truly alone. The sirens sounded as if they were outside her house. Maybe they had come for her. She lifted one hand and reached out to the creature. It's red eyes seemed to bore into her soul as it grabbed onto her hand pulled her towards him. She felt a strong burning sensation surge throughout her whole body as she and Anya stepped into the darkness.
