11: Sweet Music
When Katya saw the word she couldn't help but smile like an idiot. She had wanted to start a family here in this perfect place and now was her chance. But how could she when her dead sister was haunting her? She wondered how far gone she was. Today was the only day that she'd had morning sickness but she did notice that her stomach was a bit bloated over the last few days so she put it down to the food she was eating.
She got her phone and rang Jacob to see where he was. His phone rang til it went to answer phone. She sighed and called Ida. When Katya broke the news to her she was over the moon. She even said she would try and come and visit them a day early so Katya would only have two days to wait. Katya also mentioned that she had something else she needed to tell her but that would have to wait til she spoke to her in person.
Katya cooked herself some dinner and left some in the fridge for Jacob. It was eight o'clock and he still wasn't home. Thoughts rushed through her mind as to what he could be doing. She thought of Sara. Surely he wasn't with her? Katya decided to call him once more.
When he answered it sounded like he was somewhere busy. She heard lots of voices talking to each other.
"Hey baby."
"Hey, where are you?" She demanded.
"I'm just out with work colleagues. I will be home soon." He sounded relaxed and as if he didn't have a care in the world.
"Okay. I have something to tell you so please be quick."
"I will baby." He said goodbye and before he hung up Katya heard a woman's laughter in the background.
Katya balled her hands into fists and sat down at the kitchen table. She looked at the clock above the sink as if willing the hands to move faster. Who was he with? She felt her heart beat quicken and her right foot began to stamp the floor repeatedly in anticipation.
She decided she would watch something on TV to take her mind off of the situation. The film had been on for an hour when she heard a light tapping on the window. She got up quickly and turned around thinking it might be Jacob drunk playing a trick on her. But as she peered out of the window all she could see was darkness apart from the light of the moon shimmering down onto the sea. It looked creepy.
Again the tapping came. As she squinted her eyes she could just about make out a small figure standing beside a tree. It was the little girl. In her hand was a box. She opened it up and a song gently drifted over to Katya. It was a lullaby that she recognised from her childhood. Her mother used to sing it to her to help her fall asleep at night.
The song brought back memories. Her whole body felt strange. It was as if someone was tickling her back with a feather. It started from her neck and down her spine and then down each leg to her toes. She stood firmly in place not knowing what to do but she wasn't scared. Somehow she felt comforted.
A piano started playing in the back of her mind and it linked up to the song that was coming out of the music box the little girl was holding. The girl began to skip away from Katya in the other direction. She walked over to the front door and stepped out of her house and into the night. Her body felt as if it was no longer her own. With each step she took she couldn't feel a thing. It was like she was a puppet on strings being directed by something and choosing her every move.
Although she couldn't feel or move her limbs she could still feel the cold night air bite at her bones. It was pitch black outside but she didn't seem to mind. The little girl was a few yards ahead of her still skipping and playing the music. A sweet smell of candy trailed behind her as she wove her way through the trees.
Katya obediently followed. The girl began to hum along to the tune and Katya joined in. Her mind was no longer her own. After a minute or so she came to a halt in front of the abandoned house. The girl stood in the doorway beckoning her in.
"Come along." She grinned.
The music faded away and Katya followed her into the house.
