Afraid of Heights
They left you on a lonely fence post.
They don't understand. You shouldn't be here
Out where the wind blows you about.
You were meant to fly - you need to be free -
But them? They don't care what you pout.
They left you here, tied into place,
There's nothing for you to do.
The wind blows you to and pushes you fro,
You're sick of them controlling you.
Why did they create you and bring you to life
But to keep you tied up in the air?
Your helium - it floats; you don't want to stay.
But your string keeps you tied in despair.
Well, congratulations! It's your lucky day!
The knot on your string isn't tight.
With a gust of the wind, you loosen away.
Up you go! You're off to new heights.
Oh, the air! Oh, the sky! Oh, what beautiful sights!
You watch as you rise far above.
You laugh at the ground growing small beneath you
And the fence you are finally free of.
The birds in the air; how cocky they are.
They are privileged at birth with their wings.
Those sharp, narrow beaks, those slender, long talons
Dare not pop you nor grab at your string.
Oh, the clouds, oh, the breeze! But you don't ponder long,
You can't just enjoy all these things;
All you can think of is how you'd been trapped -
Tied onto that fence by your string.
They should know what it's like to be trapped on that fence,
On your own there with no chance to fly.
They did this to you. You despise them and rage,
You want them to not know the sky.
So let you rise up! Who cares about them?
They can't be as free as you now.
The temperature rises - your air is vibrating,
But you continue to float anyhow.
You're rising - you're rising - you're rising up high
And for once in your flight, you now worry,
For you don't seem to stop. The sky goes on still.
The ground now is growing quite blurry.
When will you stop? Will you keep going up?
You can feel that you've gone way too high.
The fact then hits you - there's no end to this -
No ceiling at the edge of the sky.
The ground is so far; it shakes you with fear.
The fence you once knew is so small.
Will this bring you joy? Will you never come down?
What will happen to you if you fall?
The heat is still rising - it's burning your body;
You panic at the feeling it brings.
And then it grows worse: you know it is there,
But you can no longer feel your string.
Stop! you are screaming. You can't handle it -
You can't go too farther beyond.
But higher you go. Hotter you burn.
And you kind of still want to go on.
The pressure, the pressure, you can't bear the force;
The pressure around is too much.
You're dizzy, you're tingling, you can't feel your head;
You can no longer feel its touch.
Pop!
And down you fall.
No air to float on, your body now limp,
You fall from the stars of the night.
Pathetic - so sad you've been left to this:
A balloon that's afraid of heights.
