THIRTY-SEVEN

jack's pov

i heard a few footsteps hurrying around from the inside. i knew exactly what i was going to say to savannah and how i was going to say it, but my mind went blank when i saw who actually opened the door.

"savannah's not in" dylan said to me with one arm resting up against the door.

i looked down to laugh at his words, then stared back up, "what? so you're half dressed, because you spent the night with lauren?".

"actually, i think cheating on your partner would be on the lists of your hobbies, not mine" he smiled and his response caused my fingers to curl into a fist.

"...you seemed to have forgotten, who else took part in that little love affair?" i finally replied as i fixed my hands in my pockets and proudly watched his face drop at my comeback.

he looked over his shoulder then whispered, "why don't you ever just leave savannah alone?".

"and why would i do that?".

"she doesn't need you or your attempts to gain her sympathy, okay. you had your chance with her and you blew it. so-".

"dylan, who's at the-...jack? hi, what's up?" savannah came and stood in front of dylan in just an oversized shirt, that draped down to her mid-thigh.

her hair was quite messy, but she pulled her fingers through it to fix it and her face was clear from make up, so the cute, tiny freckles around her nose were quite visible.

"i, uh," i cleared my throat and looked down. "i have something that i want to tell you".

"now? because, we were about to go grab some breakfast" dylan shot me a quick pity look, before resting his hands on savannah's waist and his chin on the dip of her shoulder.

"we can talk later if you like?" savannah suggested with one eye slightly squinting. although i could barely focus on speaking to her, since dylan was moving his hands much lower and playing with the hem of her shirt.

i kept on a vague facial expression - it was inbetween i'm perfectly fine and get your fucking hands off her. though, i eventually regained my natural face when savannah brushed off dylan's hands from the shirt and slightly dodged the kiss that he tried planting on her neck.

"dylan, can you give us a moment quickly?" she finally spoke up. he was clearly taken back by her words, but i suppressed my smirk as he glared at me then left savannah and i alone.

she opened the door slightly more and folded her arms across her chest, "sorry, about that" she said using her thumb to point behind her.

"about what?" i lightly chuckled, just to make sure we were on the right page.

"dylan's little PDA attempt".

"oh, i don't blame him. i mean, who could keep their hands off you?" i spoke with a wink and she placed strands of her hair behind her ear, briefly blushing at the compliment.

"but, uh, i thought you guys weren't speaking?" i questioned since as soon as dylan opened the door a few minutes ago, i've been curious to know.

"he apologised after you left yesterday," she explained. "and he, um, also agreed to move to london with me".

i instantly felt my heart drop into my stomach, "he...he has?".

savannah lightly bit against her bottom lip, "...yeah".

"are you sure though? i mean, he was jerk to you a few days ago. at least i supported you from the beginning" i helplessly defended, but she stared at me questionably.

"what's that supposed to mean?".

i scoffed and shook my head at her.

"by now, i thought that you'd at least get it" i practically spoke under my breath and savannah pressed her tongue against the inside of her cheek.

"jack, what is all of this about? because i'm sorry if i didn't want to cheat on my boyfriend last night" she sternly whispered to me.

"you weren't saying that a few months ago" i said with a tiny smirk on my lips, but i suppressed my smile when not a single humorous expression was showing on her face.

"that was different, and you know that".

"no, i don't actually. so go ahead, please explain, savs".

i looked straight into her brown eyes for a response, but she opened her mouth then closed it again like she was quickly coming up with a new answer.

"i move to london in three days, doesn't that mean anything to you?" she spoke and i subtly gulped at how suddenly the conversation turned.

"are you crazy? of course, it does".

"then why are you standing here, trying to pick up a fight when all i want is to remember the good times that i've had in la, not shit like this?".

"but he's an absolute jerk and i just-".

savannah exhaled with her eyes closed, "if you've got nothing nice to say, you might as well just leave, jack".

she held onto the door handle and gestured towards the hallway outside the apartment.

i glanced from there then back to her - i could barely believe that that guy in there, with the stupid glasses and smart mouth has managed to win her over way more than i ever will.

she stared down at the ground, showing that she clearly had no more interest in continuing this conversation.

"i don't even know why i try" i lightly chuckled, then took my car keys out of my pocket.

i stood before her for a second longer - expecting some sort of fight or comment - but her mind was fixed on getting me to leave, so i bitterly accepted it and did as she wanted.

savannah's pov

when i shut the front door, i walked back into my room. i pushed my hands through my hair and sat down on my unmade bed as dylan came out of the shower.

"did he finally decide to leave?" he questioned whilst gathered up his belongings with just a towel around his waist.

"i told him to, actually".

"oh, well that's good" he assured and sat on the bed with his arm around me. "now, we can get ready to go get some breakfast and just focus on how perfect it will be when it's just you and me in london".

i nodded my head, while staring at a single spot on the wall then he placed a kiss on the top of my head and stood to get dressed.

***

the next morning was my official last day at work. it's crazy how i've spent the majority of my early adulthood here, and how many things that have happened to me now wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for this place.

i had already cleared my office and collected my last few pay cheques from my boss, but now i've just get through the goodbyes and by doing it here, in a public place, i at least know that i won't bawl with tears.

it was everyone's break and i wanted to speak to johnson first, so i knocked gently on his office door.

"hi" i said once i walked in and he was sat in his desk chair as he looked up from his phone.

"hey, how your last day going?" he locked his phone and asked.

"surprisingly slow," i explained and sighed once i sat down in the chair opposite him.

"well, that's a good thing because it means that you won't be leaving as quickly" he mentioned and i lightly smiled at him.

"...you know, i'm gonna miss you a lot, all of you".

"oh no, is this the part where we go into a deep and meaningful conversation about how we've never left each other's side for thirteen years, and how sad this whole moving to london thing is?".

i playfully rolled my eyes at his words, and used my finger to clear the tear already forming underneath my eye.

"yeah, and this is also the part where you watch me cry because you're practically my brother and i don't know what i'd do without you" i shrugged and scoffed at how mushy i was becoming.

johnson reached behind himself and grabbed a few tissues from the box, before getting out of his chair to crouch down beside me.

"i'll miss you too" he said as he handed me the tissues. "but come on, don't act like i won't be flying over to see you when i can - you can't get rid of me that easily".

i laughed, "i know, i know and i'll be back for christmas in three months any ways".

"see, those months will fly by. trust me" johnson squeezed my hand and i warmly smiled at how assured he was, before flinging my arms around his neck to give him a hug.

"love you" i said.

he hugged me tightly and sighed over my shoulder, "love you too kiddo".

i pulled back and cocked my eyebrow, "kiddo? i'm five months older than you, johnson".

"wow, way to ruin the heartfelt moment," he complained.

i laughed as he began to stand back up, but i quickly pulled him back in for another hug.

"i'm sorry, i'm sorry" i apologised in between laughs and tightened the embrace.
