jack's pov

without any hesitation, i stepped into mr. tate's office and awkwardly caught him and savannah deeply making out against the front of his desk.

"woah, sorry" i turned away and quickly apologised. "i'm sorry, i should have knocked".

"it's fine, jack. what do you need?" mr. tate asked, so i faced them again.

"anderson wants you in his meeting".

he sighed heavily at my words and rose up from the desk.

"aw, do you have to go?" savannah wondered, trying to fix his tie for him.

"unfortunately, yes" he smoothed down his jacket and adjusted his tie a little more. "i'll come over after work, okay?".

"babe, wait" savannah stopped him before he could move any further and chuckled as she wiped her lipstick off his face.

"all good?" he checked, whilst i continued to awkwardly stand by the door.

"no" she kissed him one last time, then cleaned him up again.

mr. tate snickered and licked his lips, "now?".

"perfect".

he laughed and held onto her lower back to kiss her cheek, then hurried out of his office — patting my back on the way.

i was about to leave the room too, but i glanced back at savannah fixing her make up in the small mirror in her hands. i silently debated on whether to say something or not, but my hesitation took an awkward turn when she looked up at me.

"what?" she said, giggling a little to lighten her response.

i licked my lips, not knowing what to say because at this point, all i really wanted to do was start a conversation with her.

"aren't you supposed to be at work?" i questioned.

she focused on re-applying her lipstick in the mirror, "i, uh, start late today".

i nodded, then moved my eyes around the room, "...how is work any ways?".

"the same".

i kept expecting her to elaborate on her answers or even start up a topic, but it was no use. she's been seeing mr. tate for about a month now, it's been like forever since we spoke and yes, i do miss being around her.

"you and mr. tate are really hitting it off, huh?" i mentioned, but savannah nodded and smiled quite subtly before she picked up her bag and started to leave the office.

i sighed and gently took her by the wrist — she looked down at my haste gesture, so i naturally let go.

"hey, you know that you're still allowed to talk to me? i mean, we're still friends right?" i spoke in a quieter tone.

she looked up at me, shaking her head and folded her arms across her chest, "jack, we literally talk like once a month now and that's just a basic hi and bye".

"that's because you never give us the time too, savs".

"no, don't 'savs' me. it's not my fault that i'm getting on with my life after you refused to take me back" she told.

"i didn't refuse to take you back, i said i needed time and i'm not arguing with you right now, savannah" i told her and she looked to the side, letting out a breath and pursing her lips.

"things aren't the same anymore, jack" she stared up at me. "it's like: you have your life now and i have mine".

i immediately creased my brows to disagree, "that's never been the case with us. don't you still care if we're in each other's lives?".

she looked down at her hands and nodded very briefly, "of course...of course, i do".

"then, why don't we hang out sometime?" i widely suggested.

"hang..out?" she repeated as if it were some foreign term.

"yeah, i could come to yours. we can binge watch a tv show like old times, or one of those non-scary movies" i began to smile, but she was showing the complete opposite.

"is that even a good idea? you know, in terms of trying to move on".

i shrugged, putting my hands in my pants' pockets, "well, that's up to you".

savannah thankfully smiled, helpless to even stop, and nodded, "okay, i'd like that".

i saw her eyes drift off to somewhere else, so i followed her attention and saw her glancing at nadine, who was part-speaking to a colleague and part-watching our every move.

"well, that is if your girlfriend approves" savannah told me.

"nadine is not my girlfriend" i corrected.

"then what is she?".

i took a quick look at nadine, then back at savannah, "she's just—".

"don't you two hook up in each other's offices sometimes? or is that just something you do when you both can't control your hormones?" she inquired.

i didn't respond and stood completely confused as to how she knew.

"tristan is very observant and he tells me everything" savannah replied.

"well, she's still not my girlfriend. we haven't really established that part of our relationship yet" i said. "but we don't need to talk about nadine, i know that it's uncomfortable".

"...really?".

"yes, you know very well that when i'd invite her to my house, i was just doing it to dig at you, so i'm sorry" i assured her.

"it did make me uncomfortable, but not anymore" savannah nodded, then pulled her bag up so that it sat on her shoulder. "but, i need to head to work now, so".

"oh, okay. i'll see you" i told her and she nodded with a tiny smile, before continuing on to the elevator.

savannah's pov

i pulled on my sweater as the doorbell rang and i knew it was jack, so i didn't hesitate to open the door.

gosh, i just hope that tonight isn't awkward.

"hey" i first said.

"hey" he replied, as i stepped to the side to let him in the house.

things remained quite silent and i touched the back of my neck, unsure of what to do next until jack pulled out a packet of cheetos, a tv boxset and a dvd out of a paper bag.

"so, what first?" he questioned with a huge smile and i giggled at his attempt to lighten the mood before taking the food and letting him choose what we watch.

the night thankfully never managed to reach an awkward stage, but right now, jack was so interested in this sci-fi horror film like complete nerd, but i, on the other hand, couldn't care less about the disease-infested aliens.

"jack, this is boring" i groaned, throwing my head back a little.

"shh, no, it's the best part" he waved his hand at me and i rolled my eyes, then walked to the kitchen.

he glanced over his shoulder, "where are you going?".

"to find some more food" i said, searching in the top and bottom cupboards.

"well, there's no point watching it now" jack paused the movie with remote. "i just wanted to see your reaction".

"my reaction was boredom".

jack scoffed with a chuckle, then slowly began walking around the house as i prepared a few snacks.

"i actually miss this place sometimes" he said.

"well, why don't you move back in?" i told him and he stared at me with confusion, before i started laughing at his reaction. "i'm kidding".

jack shook his head, smirking at my joke before moving around the house again.

"you've redecorated a little — i can tell" he mentioned and paused by the tv. "threw away the plant?".

"you know i hated that plant".

he snickered, "yeah, but i did return the favour for letting me keep it in the house".

i instantly knew what he was referring to by the way he looked at me and childishly moved his eyebrows.

"stop" i insisted, trying my best to supress a smile.

"what?" jack responded as if he had no idea what i was talking about, then i focused back on pouring us a few drinks. "...you found it".

i looked over at him whilst he had his back to me, "found what?".

he showed me the pair of minnie mouse ears that he got me for my birthday and i nodded my head, smiling at him.

"and the jewellery and the lingerie...and the card" i added and picked up our drinks to walk over and hand him his.

"i was so excited for your birthday that i bought your presents like two months early" jack explained until my mind cast back to that day and my mood suddenly came down.

"what's wrong?" he worriedly pulled his eyebrows together.

"you never...you never got to spend it with me" i reminded him as i tried to hold back any sort of tears in my eyes.

"yeah, but i was thinking about you on that day" jack admitted, both us staring out of the large window. "i didn't forget and max got busted on that same day, so it wasn't all bad".

"but for the presents, i always wanted to say thank you but with everything that went on, it just wasn't the right time".

he nodded understandingly, "it's okay, savs".

"and everything that you wrote on the card, it meant a lot".

he chuckled and screwed up his face a little, "it was embarassing".

"what? no, it wasn't. i loved it" i assured and he smiled back me then took a long sip of his wine.

"right enough with the soppy stuff, because it's my birthday next week" jack bought up.

"wow, twenty-four. who would believe?".

he gestured his glass at me, "i'm going to take that as you saying that i look young, not that i'm immature".

"hey, you said it, not me" i held my hand up. "but what are your plans anyways?".

"nothing big, just a few drinks with friends, then we'll celebrate again when we're down at the cabin too" he explained. "you're coming to that, right?".

"um, of course. when have i ever missed a cabin vacation?".

"true, and we're booking an even bigger one this time so it'll be even better. is tristan coming?" jack questioned.

i shrugged, "i don't know, i haven't properly asked him yet".

"how are things going with you both by the way?".

i let out a deep breath, "i really like him. i never thought that the business man with great facial hair was my type, but there's just something about him that makes me so happy whenever i see him or talk about him".

"i can tell" jack laughed at me. "your mouth looks like it might cramp".

i hid my smile with my hand and pushed his shoulder, "shut up".
