almost a week has gone by of being back in la, and i was now pushing a cart through the sixth aisle at the local walmart, since i offered to do some grocery shopping for my parents.

as much as they like to deny it, i'm much better at picking things that they'll actually need and not waste.

"how about this?". i turned around, hearing jack's voice for the first time in over ten minutes, and saw him holding a stuffed animal over his face.

i playfully rolled my eyes and took it out of his hands, "is that the wholewheat bread that i told you to go and find?".

he chuckled, taking the stuffed animal back, "you're taking this way too seriously, babe".

"the better we do, the more money my parents save".

"or is this just an opportunity for you to say i told you so?" jack cocked his eyebrow and i lightly pushed him, so he'd turn to go and find what was intended.

just after jack disappeared, i continued moving and focused on the shelves to find ingredients for a meal i was planning today until my cart accidentally collided into another.

"i am so sorry" i quickly apologised, then looked up to get a better look at who i exactly bumped into.

my eyes blinked several times to try and grasp who was standing before me.

"...dylan," i managed to say as he stood with a surprised look on his face and in a stance that was somewhat uneasy.

"savannah," he spoke with his voice low. "hi".

"hi".

"what are you doing here? i mean, here, back in la?" he inquired.

"i'm just visiting for a few days and doing a little shopping for my parents".

dylan nodded his head, "oh, okay, well my fridge's kind of empty right now and we can't have that, right?".

i tried to smile at his joke, but i started to remember how we left things months ago, whilst becoming tense at the silence waving over us.

"so, how have you been?" he eventually asked. "how's london, it's been almost a year since we've spoken?".

i tapped my nails against the cart handle, "i know, uh, i'm good, london's great, how about you?".

"i'm well and...there's nothing much else to say" dylan lightly chuckled, scratching the back of his head so his shirt lifted up a little. "so, are you still with—".

cutting him off, jack came around the corner and placed two bags of bread in the cart, "okay, i found the bread and the exact brand that your mom wanted".

"you did?".

"only after i'd bent down so much to make sure i didn't miss it" he clutched onto his back. "we need to cook something extra healthy today, so i can get back in shape".

i watched as realisation quickly dawned on dylan's face, once jack said the word 'we'.

i awkwardly rubbed the side of my arm, "jack, you remember dylan, right?".

his eyes enlarged slightly, "oh, hey. how's it going?".

jack went to hold out his hand, but pulled back, clearly unsure of whether it's appropriate to greet your girlfriend's ex boyfriend in a friendly manner.

but he held his hand back out again any ways and they shook hands.

"wow, i could barely recognise you without the glasses" jack said, causing dylan to smile lightly. although i could feel the hint of sarcasm in it.

"so you two are still together?" dylan asked, although i was sure he knew the answer by now.

"yeah, i thought you would have known" i wondered.

he shook his head, "no. word doesn't really get around to the ex-boyfriend".

i uneasily shifted in my spot, wondering how i was going to get out of this one. because even though, it was nice to know that dylan was doing well, i've just completely forgotten how to act around him.

"so uh, i'm gonna go and continue collecting things to fill up that fridge" he thankfully spoke, moving his cart beside us. "i'll see you, savannah".

he began walking away without me having said a word, but i knew i needed to.

"i'm still sorry, by the way" i spoke up, before he could move any further. "i-i didn't mean to hurt you".

dylan stared at me, almost shocked that i would go back to that day, but he soon let out a smile and turned to jack.

"take care of her, okay?" he said to him and jack nodded, soon allowing dylan to continue on his way.

he puffed out his cheeks, "well, that wasn't awkward at all".

"i felt like i could barely breathe in that entire conversation" i said, gripping onto the cart and taking minor and several breaths.

jack rubbed my lower back and nodded towards the next aisle, "come on, let's just hurry up and get out of here before my ex turns up".

for probably the first time, i laughed at the mention of madison until we moved along to find the next item on the list.

just as jack and i reached the car, my phone started to ring in my bag and i took it out to see the caller id as; rachel.

i could already sense what she was going to try and ask, since she was randomly calling me in the middle of my vacation.

"rachel, is everything okay?" i questioned, holding the phone between my cheek and shoulder as we moved the grocery bags into the trunk.

"no, actually, i'm sorry to say this but we're going to need you back at work" she said and i quickly took my phone back in my hands.

"what? why?".

"as you know, fashion week is coming up and this will be your first one at the job, and it's all a little crazy so we need everyone helping out" she explained. "but since you're supposed to be away, we promise to pay you extra for the rest for the month".

i sighed as i thought about what she was saying. even though she was asking, i knew that she was actually telling me to come back, otherwise my job would be on the line.

but i guess i could use the extra money right now.

i closed my eyes and sighed deeply, "um, yeah, sure".

"fantastic, and you won't have to worry about paying to flying back early, because we've got you all covered" rachel added. "i'll text you the details".

"yep, great, okay, bye" i hung up and dropped my phone back into my bag.

"what was that?" jack questioned, as we got in the car with him driving.

i ran my hand through my hair, "that was work - they want me back early because fashion week's coming up, hectic preparations are starting and they need be multi-tasking".

he furrowed his brows, "when?".

"i think tomorrow or the next, but they said they'll pay for the flight and pay me extra for the month".

"okay, well i'm coming with you" he promptly said.

"no," i immediately declined. "stay. enjoy your holiday and be with your family and friends".

jack reached up and touched my cheek, before i leant against it, "but, i don't want to leave you alone, savs".

"we'll only be separated for a few days and before you know it, you'll be on the flight back to see me" i smiled, trying to lighten up the situation.

jack huffed and placed a kiss on my forehead, "okay" he agreed, then turned on the ignition to start pulling out of the parking spot.
