3 | breaking bad

As Evelyn ran through the woods, she could hear voices. She stopped for a moment, taking out her headphones and listened.

"Don't look so surprised," Damon's voice echoed throughout the woods. "You knew this was inevitable. Go ahead, run. I'll give you a head start."

Out of nowhere, there were gunshots and she could hear two distinct groans. She hid behind a tree but looked around to see what happened.

Sheriff Forbes injected them each with vervain before turning to Mason, "Thank you, Mason."

Evelyn followed Sheriff Forbes and Mason, who were with deputies who dragged Stefan and Damon to the Lockwood family crypt.

"It's down the stairs to the left," Mason directed.

"Careful," Sheriff Forbes instructed, "The wooden bullets and vervain won't keep them down for long."

She turned to Mason, "What is this place?"

"Old slave quarters from the original Lockwood house," Mason answered quickly and the two disappeared out of ear shot.

She started pacing with a giant stick in her hand, trying to figure out what to do. They're going to die. Her best friend and her...They're going to die.

Evelyn froze when she heard footsteps ascending stairs and she hid to find Mason walking out of the entrance.

Making a split-second, awful decision, Evelyn raised the stick and slammed it into his gut. He let out a groan and she gasped at her action. That was a bad idea.

"Oh, no, no, no. I shouldn't have done that," She immediately reacted, "Don't kill me."

"What are you even doing out here?" Mason asked with a laugh that made her stomach churn, standing up.

"I was going for a run when I heard voices."

"Do yourself a favor and go home."

"Bu-"

"Go. Home."

"What's down there?" Evelyn questioned, pushing her luck. She should just go home.

"You really don't know when to quit, do you?"

"So I've been told."

Before he could say anything, footsteps approached from behind her. "There are more of you?" he said, clearly pissed off.

"Have you seen Stefan?" Elena immediately asked.

"Yeah Elena," Mason said matter-of-factly, "I've seen him. Seen Damon too."

"Where are they?" she hounded.

"You don't need me for that," he said, turning to Caroline, "I'll let your friend here sniff them out." Mason narrowed his eyes on her. "Does your mother know what you are?" he asked, "I'm happy to tell her."

She was ready to lunge at him but he grabbed Evelyn from behind and wrapped his around her, his forearm resting under her chin. "Don't be stupid! Necks snap easy around here."

"I can take you."

"Wanna bet?"

"Yeah. I do," she said, rushing at him, pulling him away from Evelyn and up against a tree, "I told you."

She kneed him in the groin and pushed him down on all fours. She kicked him hard in the stomach which sent him flying against a tree and he hit the ground with a thud.

"Come on," Caroline said to Elena and Evelyn.

"They're this way," Evelyn said, guiding them to the entrance they had disappeared down. She began to make her way toward the stair when Caroline latched onto her arm.

"My mom," she warned and Evelyn looked at her to see that her eyes were wide in fear. "She's killing them."

Evelyn pulled her arm from the girls grasp, "Even more of a reason for me to go after them." She immediately ran down the stairs without another word.

"Let's do this," Sheriff Forbes demanded, "Each with a stake in the heart, then burn them both." Evelyn looked around before she found a rock. She picked it up and tossed it across the ground. She picked up a plank of wood as the Sheriff spoke again, "Check it out."

Once he deputy rounded the corner, Evelyn raised the wood and whacked it across his head. She winced in sympathy as he stumbled backwards, falling to the ground.

Evelyn made her way to the main cell where Damon and Stefan laid sprawled out on the floor. Her eyes widened when a barrel of a gun was in her face. "Evelyn!" she gasped. "What are you doing?"

"Me?" she gaped as she looked across the room. "Shouldn't I be asking you that question?"

"You don't understand," she said, "They aren't what you think they are."

"You can't kill them," Evelyn shook her head. "I won't let you."

"What makes you think you have a day in that?" someone spoke from behind her, pressing their gun to her spine. She froze when there was a loud bang. Someone had closed the door. "What was that?"

Evelyn took his surprise as an opportunity to knock the gun from his hand. She scrambled to grab the weapon before she pointed it at him, "Don't move."

The Sheriff had her gun raised as well, "Who else is with you?"

There was a blur zooming across the room and the deputy lunged for Evelyn. The blur closed in on the man, biting into his neck. Another deputy shot at Caroline but she used the deputy as a shield. The shooting stopped and she rushed from behind, knocking him across the room. The deputy fell into Evelyn, knocking her to the ground.

Evelyn winced as a sharp pain radiated in her abdomen. She struggled to move the man but eventually wiggled out from under him. Caroline came to a slow and she smiled at her mother, her vampire teeth on full display, "Hi, mom."

The Sheriff let out a gasp in surprise as she lowered her gun, "Caroline."

After calming the Sheriff down, Evelyn turned over her gun and Caroline went to go clean up. She could tell that she was just ready to be bursting with questions but she remained quiet.

Evelyn jumped slightly when she heard movement from the ground. Damn reached over to the deputy who had been shot, feeding from him in order to regain his strength.

Elena made her way into the cave once the fighting died down, immediately crossing the room to Stefan.

"You need to drink some deputy blood," Damon suggested to Stefan.

"No. I'm gonna be fine," he protested. "It's just gonna take a little bit longer."

"Damon's right you know," Caroline agreed, "If there's ever a time to break your diet..."

"He said he didn't want it, okay?" Elena snapped.

"This is a most unfortunate situation. Two deputies dead and you," Damon said, circling the room, turning to Sheriff Forbes. "What am I gonna do with you?"

"You won't tell anyone, will you?" Caroline asked hopefully, "Mom? Please. Look, I know that we don't get along and that you hate me but I'm your daughter and you'll do this for me, right?" She stared at her mother pleadingly, "Mom, please. He will kill you."

"Then kill me," Sheriff Forbes said, her chin up.

"No!"

"I can't take this. Kill me now," she begged.

Damon bent down and looked into her eyes, "But you were gonna drag it out so painfully."

He grabbed her and she stood up quickly.

"No, no, no!" Caroline begged.

"Damon, don't!" Stefan warned.

"Damon, please!" Elena shouted.

Evelyn watched him cautiously. She knew him well enough that he wouldn't go that far. She had been his friend.

"Relax guys," he said, looking at everyone, "No one is killing anybody." He turned to the Sheriff, "You're my friend." He looked around at the mess, "We've got to clean this up."

Evelyn bent down to grab a hold of the deputy but a pain radiated through her body. She yelped as she held her back in pain. Damon was at her side in seconds, "What happened?"

She lifted her shirt up carefully to reveal a nasty purple and red bruise covering her back. "Oh, my god!" Caroline exclaimed, covering her mouth in shock, "I am so sorry."

"We need to get you to a hospital," Elena said quickly.

"No," Damon argued, "Not when you have vampire blood at your disposal."

"We can't risk it," Elena shook her head.

"It's not your choice," Evelyn interrupted, snappier than she had intended.

Elena looked taken aback and Evelyn's facial expressions softened as she reassured her sister, "It'll be fine, I'll be careful."

Her sister appeared reluctant but nodded. Evelyn turned to Damon and nodded, signaling that she wanted his blood.

Damon bit into his wrist and moved it to her mouth. As the blood slipped down her throat, she immediately felt ten times better. The bruise on her back returned to its normal skin color and she pulled away from his wrist. She wiped her mouth off with the back of her hand to clear it of any excess blood. "Let's get them out of here," she announced, clapping her hands together.

After getting Caroline settled, Evelyn made her way to the door but was cut off by Damon. "Caroline's sleeping on the couch and Elena and Stefan are in his room."

"I heard," he responded, "And you?

"I'm going home," Evelyn answered, slipping her jacket on and heading to the door but she paused, "What you did for Caroline's mom? That's the Damon who I was friends with."

He looked ready to say something but she shook her head and walked out the door.
