62| INSTINCT

After Callas had called both the boys out the other day, Sam went on to creating the patrol groups. Callas quickly grew bored of listening to them and went back upstairs to sleep, with Zeus following her quickly. When she had woken up the next day, Zeus was laying beside her, in the middle of the bed, between her and Reed. Reed was asleep on his stomach, his head facing towards the door, while his left arm hung over the side of the bed. Callas breathed in deeply, stretching, letting out a small groan before she settled back under the covers of the quilt, gently petting Zeus as he slept. Her eyes stared up at the ceiling blankly while she listened to the faint sound of the waves that crashed into the sand down at the beach, and the sound of birds quietly chirping as the sun rose up in the sky. It wasn't as if Callas wasn't grateful that Sam and Emily had allowed her and Reed to stay in their house because she was, it was just that she missed being home with Silas and Anya. She missed the small routine that they had and the conversations between Silas and Anya early in the morning. She couldn't help but feel responsible for taking that away from herself after she told Silas what had happened to Reed. Callas just wanted to go home.

"You're awake early," Reed croaked from his side of the bed, not bothering to move to look over at her.

"Yeah, so are you." She continued to stare up at the ceiling, not once looking over at him as she spoke, it was as if her body didn't want to turn her head. It seemed as if her body didn't want to look at him out of guilt.

"I'm always up early," his voice was muffled from where his head was laying on his pillow.

"I'm usually up before you are," she argued.

"Doesn't change the fact that I get up early, you just get up extra early." Reed laughed quietly before he heard Callas sigh. "What?"

"I just can't help but feel responsible for what happened to Si."

     "What do you mean?"

"When I told him that you were gone, granted Embry was there and said some things, he had a heart attack, and it's my fault."

Reed rolled over and looked at her with knitted eyebrows. "No." He shook his head. "It's not. If I didn't go after Will, then none of it would have happened. It's my fault."

Callas made a face as she disagreed. "Technically it's Will's because you didn't know what you were or that anything would have happened if you went after him, you were just doing your job."

     "See? It wasn't your fault."

"By that logic, it wasn't yours either."

"Are we agreeing it was Will's?"

     Callas nodded. "It's his fault."

"Great. So, can I sleep some more?"

"Never said you had to wake up." Callas glanced over at him.

"Smartass." Reed rolled over and tried to get comfortable, but he couldn't. "Great, now I can't get back to sleep." He laid onto his back again, looking up at the ceiling like Callas was doing. There was a short pause before he asked, "Breakfast?"

     "Yeah."

Both of them pushed the blankets off their bodies to get up, but only Callas shivered once she stood up from the bed and placed the blanket back over the spot she had once laid on. "I can't believe you yelled at Paul." Reed laughed, sitting with his legs over the side of the bed while his hands were balled up into fists that rested on the mattress beside him. "That was amazing and brave."

"It wasn't until after I had finished that I remembered Paul has anger issues and he hates the fact that I like Henry."

"Okay, not so much bravery then, more like—"

     "Stupidity?"

"You said it, I didn't." Reed raised his hands in defence. "I was going to say innate impulse, but I'm not really seeing much of a difference." He placed his hands back down again.

     "You mean 'instinct'?"

"Would you just accept my answer instead of being a smartass?" Reed turned his head to look at her as she walked around the bed to stand by the door.

"Would that make your life a little easier?"

Reed nodded. "Yes! Yes, it would."

"Then no. I'll keep being a smartass, it's an innate impulse of mine."

Callas had a small smile on her face as Reed looked up at her with his mouth slightly parted, his tongue was sticking out on his bottom lip as he went to lick them to stop them from being so dry, his eyes looked tired and his hands were still balled up beside him. Slowly, she opened the bedroom door and her smile widened as Reed couldn't help but grin as he got up to chase her out of her room, mumbling about her mocking him and still being a smartass. She laughed, carelessly, feeling the heavy weight of fear and stress lift off her shoulders ever-so-slightly, while she ran down the stairs. The built-up stress, that had been previously suffocating her, seemed to have loosened its grip from around her throat and allowed her to be a teenager, a younger sister, the child that she was, even for a few minutes. Sam watched from the kitchen as Callas ran around the table, that had two plates already laid out on it, to get away from Reed, who was still chasing after her, with Zeus chasing him. He looked over to Emily with his cup of coffee still held up to his mouth and raised an eyebrow. Emily smiled at him and looked over to Callas and Reed as well before she turned back to pouring herself a cup of coffee.

"What are you two doing?" Sam asked after a minute of holding his cup to his mouth without drinking.

     "Three," Callas corrected.

"Okay..." Sam stressed his reply. "What are you three doing?"

"Very important Quinn family stuff," Reed answered.

"Right, well, could you take your 'very important Quinn family stuff' somewhere else?"

Emily lightly hit his chest as she stood next to him, with her cup. "Play nice," she warned Sam. "This is the first time either of them has actually had real smiles since they've been here, don't take that away from them just yet."

"Listen to Emily!" Callas yelled at Sam and she ran for the stairs to get away from Reed. "Emily is smarter than you, she's not a Neanderthal!"

Before Callas could run up the stairs, Reed caught her and lifted her up, bringing her back over to the kitchen table while they both laughed and Zeus barked at them. Sam rolled his eyes and wrapped his left arm around Emily's shoulders. Reed placed Callas back down on the ground and moved to the kitchen to get them both a drink while Callas sat down at the table and picked up her fork. When Reed walked back over with the two drinks, his phone, that had been left on the coffee table in front of the sofa from the night before, began to ring. Reed placed the cups down and walked over, answering his phone while Callas began to eat the scrambled eggs. She turned around in her chair and looked over at him, staring at his back as he faced away from her, while he spoke to the person on the other end of the phone call. By the time he hung up and turned around, he had a small smile on his face.

"That was Anya. Si's back home now, so we can go back anytime. But, just to be safe, I think we should wait a day to go back, you know? See how the first patrol goes before we leave and head back," Reed informed her as he walked back to the table and sat down, placing his phone on the table.

"Where are you going to be patrolling?" Callas asked.

"Quil and I are taking Henry's house tonight."

Callas nodded with a smile and picked up the buttered slice of toast and bit into it. "Is anyone staying here?"

Sam sat down opposite Callas at the table while Emily sat opposite Reed. Sam answered, "Seth and Paul are patrolling here. Embry is staying in the house."

Reed choked on the breakfast sandwich he had made himself and coughed. "I, uh, I thought he was going to be with Brady and Collin." Reed raised an eyebrow at Sam.

"You know why it's better if he stays here. Besides, we've talked about this."

Reed cleared his throat and nodded. "Yeah, I know we have."

Callas looked between the two of them before looking over at Emily. "Did you have to deal with this when Reed first phased?"

Emily smiled. "Yeah, but it's more civilised now. Nothing has been broken."

     "What was broken before?"

     "A nose."

Callas closed her eyes and sighed, whispering, "Oh my god." She rubbed her forehead and looked over at Reed who smiled sheepishly at her. "Who's nose?"

"Pauls," Reed answered with his shoulders hunched and the same sheepish smile on his face, hoping Callas wouldn't be angry with him for breaking someone's nose.

"So, not Embry's? Or yours? Or Seth's?"

     "No."

     "Just Paul's?"

     "Yes."

"I have no problem with that then."

Reed laughed quietly and continued to eat. Callas smiled at him, putting some of the eggs onto her toast before she continued to eat as well. She didn't feel sorry for Paul, not in the slightest, she felt as if he got what he deserved, especially as his behaviour and attitude towards Henry was less than positive for no reason—unless the 'spaghetti incident' was more than what she was told. Either way, she didn't care for Pauls broken nose. Zeus rested his head on Callas's lap and glanced over to Emily as she had picked up one of her books and flipped the pages. All Callas had to do was get through the rest of the day, and another night, before she was able to go back home, back to Silas and Anya. If she could get through that, then she would be okay, it was all about taking steps, no longer keeping everything bottled up to herself and trying to deal with everything all at once. Now that she knew the truth, she planned on using it to her advantage, before everything came crumbling down around her.
