6| ACCIDENTAL INTRODUCTION
The last bell of the day rung. The English lesson just seemed to drone on and on, it didn't help that one of the boys next to her kept talking to his friend loudly, distracting Callas. Silas would be in the parking lot by now, in his beaten up, old, red truck. When Callas walked out of the classroom, with the two boys behind her still talking loudly, she almost screamed when Henry jumped up from the floor, walking beside her. She held onto her chest, feeling her heartbeat race underneath her skin. Henry laughed and wrapped his arm over her shoulder.
"Don't do that, Henry! I'm too young to have a cardiac arrest." She shook her head, steadying her breathing.
He unwrapped his arm from around her with a grin. "Sorry, Cally. Not my fault you scare easily." He laughed again.
"How was I to know you'd pop up from the ground like a whack-a-mole?" Callas responded as they walked down the stairs and towards the entrance of the school.
Henry laughed again. "Well, I did say I'd wait for you." He shrugged.
She shook her head at him. "You could have gone home instead of waiting around for an hour." She looked at him with an eyebrow raised.
He shook his head this time. "It wasn't a problem. I got more research done anyway." He held up the History book.
She rolled her eyes. "Life of the party, Hen," Callas jested as he lightly shoved her.
Somehow, during some part of the day, Callas became comfortable with Henry. He was just an eccentric character, which Callas countered with her calm and verbose nature. Surprisingly, she never met Jacob in any of her classes, which she remembered Silas saying could happen. Unless she did and she just couldn't recognise him. Not that she really minded, her goal wasn't to meet him or his friends on the first day, she'd rather ease into meeting him and his group gradually, rather than immediately. It wasn't like Henry was that bad of a companion for the day.
Henry did show her around the school, telling her where things would be, pointing out certain people to avoid. Although that last part puzzled her, the people he pointed out looked much too old to be in their year, they looked like they were in their last year if anything. But then again, she wasn't one of the younger students in her year but looked like it, and some of the students who were probably younger looked older than they were. So, she couldn't really tell, as it was the same for her. But she knew, after Henry told her of course, that he was one of the older students in their year, that his birthday was the first week that they started the academic year, so Callas missed that.
Callas put her hand in her pocket and paused. "Oh, the form!" Henry looked back at her.
"Do you want me to wait?"
"You don't have to, my granddad is picking me up, and I don't know how long I'll be in the office. You go on ahead." She waved him off, he nodded back and waved goodbye before he walked out of the parking lot, in the opposite direction Callas would have taken home.
With the form now in her hand, and signed by all her teachers that she had that day, she turned back around. Her eyes were cast on the form in her hand, looking over the messy signatures by all her teachers, not looking at where she was going. A squeak left her lips as she walked into someone, her body falling on top of them, knocking them to the ground, their arms holding her hips. She looked at them, ready to apologise when her breathing got caught in her throat. To say the boy was beautiful would have been the understatement of the year.
He had beautiful russet-coloured skin, short black hair with dark brown eyes. He stared back at Callas, his lips slightly parted, neither of them said anything. It was like her body was filled with a warmth that she's never felt before, it was calming and peaceful. Her heart didn't race, it was steady, but it felt like it stopped for a moment. Something about him had made Callas feel as though part of her life had been completed, like a missing puzzle piece finally slotted into place, like she was where she was meant to be. It was like gravity was pulling them together.
It was like the world had stopped turning, everything was silent as they looked at each other. A small smile spread across his lips, he let out a quiet sigh, while his hands gripped tighter on her hips like he wanted her to stay there and to never leave. Callas's hands were either side of his head, her eyes were wide open. She didn't want to blink, just in case he wasn't there when she opened them again. She didn't want to move. But someone else thought differently. One of the other boys helped pull her off him, helping her stand up straighter.
The other boy slowly stood up, never taking his eyes off her, he didn't bother brushing the dirt off his clothes as he opened his mouth a bit more, but nothing came out. One of his friends placed their hands on his shoulder, clapping their hands against his shoulder before slapping his back with a laugh. Callas blinked as her eyes began to water from the cold air, she looked down before she looked back up with wide eyes.
She was finally able to speak, "I am so sorry," she pressed on rather quickly. "I should have been looking where I was going," she apologised.
"It's okay," the boy replied slowly like he was still in a trance.
"I'm sorry I knocked you over, that was so stupid of me, it won't happen again." She shook her head.
"It's fine." The boy smiled.
"I promise you won't see me again. I can't believe I didn't even get off you, that's so embarrassing." She placed a shaky hand on her forehead, she couldn't believe she just laid on top of him.
"What?" He shook his head like he was coming back to reality.
"I'm so, so, sorry, that was terrible! Sorry, I probably hurt you, I shouldn't have done that. I should have paid more attention to where I was going," Callas continued to ramble on to herself.
"Trust me, it's fine, I didn't mind." He held his hands out to stop her rambling.
"You won't see me again, I promise." She lowered her hand from her forehead.
"Don't say that," his voice suddenly got low and quiet.
"What? Why?"
"I'm Embry." He ignored her question and stuck his hand out to her. "Embry Call." A small smile spread on his face again.
She shook his hand. "Uh, I'm Callas—"
"Wait, Callas Quinn?" One of the other boys interrupted, she looked over to him.
"Yeah? How'd you know?"
"I'm Jacob, we knew each other when we were little, well our parents did anyway." So, he was Jacob.
"Billy's kid," she mumbled to herself.
"Yeah, that's me. I didn't know you were back."
"I got back on Saturday." She nodded.
Embry's grip on her hand tightened as she spoke to Jacob, but she didn't notice. Small jolts went up her arm as they continued to hold hands, frozen mid-shake. Embry glared at Jacob, although Callas didn't notice that either, still looking at Jacob. The others smirked at one another as Embry, involuntarily, against his own willing actions, stepped closer to Callas, almost as a warning for Jacob to back off. Although he didn't mind standing closer to her either. A few of the boys snickered, covering their mouths, looking down as they watched their friend glare at Jacob in a hostile manner.
"How did you remember my name? No offence, but I forgot about you, so..." Callas could hear the other boys laugh quietly again, Jacob looked down with a smile before looking back up.
"I overheard Silas and my dad talking the other week. Silas said that you and Reed were coming back to stay. Sorry about your dad, that must have been hard." Jacob offered a soft smile in condolences.
"Uh, yeah. It is—was." It wasn't as hard as it was in the beginning, so she corrected herself. "It was. But I should be used to having people leave my life." She shrugged, lowering her hand that was still in Embry's hold. Jacob tilted his head, not understanding what she meant. "We moved around a lot, so I had to say goodbye to a lot of friends."
"Oh, right." He nodded. "But you're here to stay, right?" Jacob's eyes flickered over to Embry—who turned to Callas with a hopeful look—before looking back.
"Yeah, we're staying. This is our home. Reed and I agreed that we didn't want to move around anymore. We wanted to stay in one place. So, what better place than La Push, right?" She grinned.
"She knows what she's talking about." One of the other boys held his hand over to her, she laughed and slapped his palm with her own. She recognised him as one of the boys Henry pointed out to avoid. He didn't seem bad. She wondered why he said it.
"That's good, maybe we can hang out sometime. You could hang out with us tomorrow, if you'd like?" Jacob suggested. "I'll give you a proper introduction to everyone. Some of us are absent today, so they should be in tomorrow."
"Yeah, sure. Uh..." Callas let go of Embry's hand with a shy smile as she looked down, putting the form between her lips and she dug through her pockets for the timetable. "When do you guys have a free?"
"We have a free just before lunch with you." Embry pointed to the slot just before lunch, with a smile. "Oh, and I have Chemistry with you right beforehand, so we can walk together," he mumbled quietly towards the end, almost embarrassed at how enthusiastic he sounded.
"Yeah, okay." Callas nodded with a smile. She waved the form in her hand. "I should hand this in, though. Gramps should be waiting for me somewhere." She looked towards the sea of cars and spotted the red truck easily. Silas was in the front, reading the newspaper, waiting for her.
"What a truck." The boy who high-fived her laughed a bit.
"I think it's great," Callas defended. "It has character."
"Yeah, from the fifteen-hundreds." He laughed again.
"Shut up," Callas stumbled quietly with a laugh. "I'll see you guys tomorrow," she called out as she made her way up the stairs again to hand in the form.
"See ya, Callas," Jacob responded as he waved goodbye.
"Dude," Callas heard Embry start up, just before the doors closed behind her.
Once inside, Callas could feel her cheeks warm up as she bit her bottom lip to stop her smile, she turned back to look out the doors and saw Embry smiling widely up at her before he looked away quickly. She laughed quietly as the others and Jacob began to mess with him, pushing and shoving, messing up his hair as they walked to a large truck while Jacob made his way over to a motorbike. Maybe Silas was right, maybe he does have a thing with restoring old vehicles, the motorbike looked slightly old, but done up. At least Reed will definitely be able to fix up his motorbike now.
Callas turned back around, walking towards the front office. "Hello, Dear!" The woman at the reception desk smiled at her. "Did you have a good day?"
"Yeah, I did." Callas nodded and handed over the form.
"I'll get you another one tomorrow for your other teachers. See you soon." Callas nodded her head before turning back around.
She walked through the corridors towards the front doors with a smile still on her face. It was weird. She had only just met Embry, Jacob and some of the other boys, but something about them felt different. Much more different to Henry, but she brushed it off due to the fact that Henry was the first person she met, and by the time she met the others she was already used to Henry and his behaviour, as well as the school. So, she would have been accustomed to the other boys, as they were just as enthusiastic as Henry was.
Silas looked up from the newspaper with a smile as Callas got in the truck. He folded the newspaper, not bothering to ask how her day was as he had already seen the smile on her face and her talking to Jacob and the others. Although, he didn't see what happened before that. He started up the truck, pulling out of the parking lot and towards the house. Callas stared out of the window, watching the trees blur as they drove passed, the smile on her face never faltering. Suddenly, she couldn't wait to go back to school tomorrow to see the boys again.
