55| IMPRINTING
Callas jumped slightly, feeling her heart rate pick up in shock. As she turned around, she saw a girl with short black hair, just ending below her jawline, copper-coloured skin, and deep brown eyes. She was beautiful, even if Callas could only technically see half of her face as she stared at Sam with a scowl. With her short-sleeved grey shirt and jean shorts, Callas could only assume that she was a shape-shifter, her abnormal body temperature keeping her from freezing in the frigid weather. Sam clenched his jaw slightly as he stared back at her, sending her a stiff nod, squeezing Emily's shoulder lightly. The girl rolled her eyes at him and turned to look at Callas, who was still taken aback by how breath-taking she was. There was a certain air around her, one that screamed a sense of authority, possibly to do with her rank in Jacobs pack. Callas doubted that with the look that she sent Sam, that she was going to be in his pack. The look she sent Callas was unreadable to her, considering she didn't know the girl, or what she was like.
"Leah!" Seth beamed happily as he jumped down from the porch, making his way over to stand beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist while she wrapped hers around his shoulders, being slightly taller than he was.
Callas shook her head out of her trance and looked down to the ground, finally analysing what Leah had told her. "Wait..." She turned her upper body back to Embry, still not looking away from the ground, and pointed to him weakly. "You—?" She breathed out, raising her eyebrow. "I..."
"You didn't tell her?" Leah scoffed.
"Okay," Callas started, looking back at Leah. "I'm new to this, I was only introduced yesterday."
"Are you kidding me? You guys didn't tell her? You've been talking about her for weeks!"
"I'm not nearly as drunk enough as I should be to be relatively okay with this." Callas placed her hand on her forehead, rubbing harshly.
"You're a kid, Cal, you shouldn't be drinking until you're at least twenty-one. I'm not even old enough to drink," Reed finally spoke up, turning to look at Callas just before his eyes shifted to Leah and his body stilled.
Callas heard his sharp intake of air and looked up at him. His mouth was slightly ajar as he breathed in. Reed's eyes didn't fully close as he blinked while he gave his complete undivided attention to her, obviously not wanting to completely blink, just in case she was to disappear before his very eyes. His breathing shallowed and he gulped. Seth, slowly, moved away from Leah and stood beside Callas, crouching down to pet Zeus, smiling to himself as he looked back at the others, then up to Callas—who continued to look between the two of them. Leah stayed silent and her hands shook slightly before she balled her fists to stop them from shaking. Reed breathed out again, opening his mouth wider to say something, but no sounds came out. He was stuck in a trance. Paul, who was closest to Reed, by Sam's truck, chuckled and stepped forward, patting Reed on the back, roughly, and squeezed his shoulders, shaking him ever-so-slightly, while looking over at the others. Callas looked to Sam, hoping to get a reaction out of him, but he seemed just as stunned as Reed and Leah were.
"Well, this is... unexpected," Jacob mumbled from the porch.
"What? Why?" Callas asked quickly as she turned back to look at him. "What's happening?"
"Reed... just... imprinted... on Leah," Sam finally managed to speak up.
"But I thought you said that it was impossible?" She questioned while still looking at Jacob.
Jacob shook his head. "No. I said it was uncertain."
Turning back to look at her brother, Callas furrowed her eyebrows together. "H-How long does this last for?" She asked quietly. Neither Reed or Leah had moved.
Seth stood up, beaming down at Callas, nudging her with his right elbow. "I guess if all things go well, my status as an 'honorary Quinn' will technically be true. I'm going to be your brother now!"
"Wait, does this mean I'm technically going to be related to Sam now too?"
"I guess." He shrugged, wrapping his arm around her shoulder, smiling at Leah and Reed, Callas made a sound at the back of her throat as she crossed her arms over her chest.
Finally, Reed blinked, licking his bottom lip as he stuck his hand out to Leah. His hands were visibly shaking with nerves. She looked down at his hand, still completely silent and stunned, before gently placing her hand on his, both of them staring at their connected hands, blinking rather quickly. Reed's lips tugged into a faint smile, in full awe of Leah, and shook her hand weakly, not wanting to take the chance of possibly hurting her. Callas looked up at Seth, trying to hide her grin, while his spread wider across his face. She was glad that her brother found someone, albeit strangely and rather abrupt. She still didn't quite understand the whole 'imprinting' thing that the others had talked about, but she at least knew that it meant they were soulmates. Still softly shaking her hand, Reed looked from their grasp back up to her face. Callas was waiting for one of them to speak. By the porch, the boys began to laugh quietly to themselves, Callas glanced over and glared, not wanting them to ruin the moment for Leah and her brother.
"Hi," he breathed out.
"Hi," she repeated.
"Hey," Callas spoke up with a smile, catching both of their attention. "Yeah, hey, remember me? The one who is still out of the loop?"
Reed cleared his throat and let go of Leah's hand, stepping over to stand next to Callas, on her right, while his left hand rested on her back. "Sorry, Cal," he whispered, despite knowing everyone else, besides Emily, could hear him.
"Is what she said true?" She asked, looking up at him.
He turned to look at Embry, then looked back at Callas, nodding. "I wish it wasn't—"
"Why?"
"Can I tell you later?"
"Let me guess, that's code for: 'I'm going to need time to think up an excuse to use to avoid this conversation from ever happening'?"
Reed shook his head. "Sam was right, you deserve to know. But, I'll tell you when things die down here first."
"You mean after you get to know Leah."
He looked over to Leah and smiled shyly. "Something like that. We need to catch her up on a few things."
Callas sighed, moving away from both Seth and Reed. "Yeah, fine, whatever. Zeus needs a bath anyway."
"I'm sorry," Reed whispered to her as she waved him off, picking up Zeus's stick to get him to follow her into the house.
"So am I."
As she walked over to the porch, she kept her head down, avoiding Embry's gaze as she brushed passed Quil and Jared. The boys moved to the side, out of her way, and watched her walk into the house, passed the roundtable, behind the sofa and up the stairs with Zeus. Her legs felt heavy, and not of her own, as the information sunk in—really sunk in. Now that she was alone, there was no noise to distract her from her thoughts and no one else talking to pull herself out of her overloaded mind. She was imprinted on. Embry had imprinted on her, possibly the first day that they met. She was his soulmate. Callas shuddered, pushing the door open to the bathroom, closing it behind her as she took the collar and lead from Zeus, piling it in the sink. She laid the stick in the sink as well and opened the cupboard underneath the sink, spotting the shampoo and she picked it up. Zeus sat down beside the bath, looking up at Callas and she pulled her flight jacket and jumper off, laying them on the closed toilet seat, making sure to take the sandwich out to leave on the counter by the sink, still wrapped up neatly.
"Okay, Bud," she mumbled as she turned around, lifting him up to put into the bath.
As she turned the shower on and removed the shower head from the hold on the wall, Zeus sat down, panting heavily, leaning down to drink the water. Callas shook her head and quickly rinsed what she could off of him, getting his fur wet. After placing the shower head down, she put some of the shampoo on him. Zeus closed his eyes as Callas rubbed the shampoo in his fur, lifting his paws up to clean the clumps of remaining sand away. Callas couldn't help but get lost in her thoughts. She was bound to Embry for the rest of her life. What if she wanted to move away for college? Could she even do that now? She doubted it, even if Embry would technically leave with her if she wanted to get out of La Push. The pack probably meant too much for him to just drop it. Did she even want to be with Embry that way? Even though she knows a lot about him and his life, she still doesn't know him all that well. They haven't known each other for very long.
"When did life get so complicated?" She asked Zeus quietly, resting on her knees, trying to avoid getting soaked with Zeus moving around so much, trying to mess with the shower head that was resting at the bottom of the bath.
He turned to look at her when she started to speak, but he just stared up at her blankly.
"Right. I'm talking to my dog like he's going to answer my questions."
Zeus continued to look at her, panting.
"I'm still doing it," she groaned, shaking her head.
Callas rolled her eyes at herself and picked up the shower head, washing the shampoo out of Zeus's fur. What did being an imprint mean for her? What was expected of her now? She would have to ask Emily at some point, maybe she would be able to answer the questions that Callas couldn't think of an answer for. Zeus barked at her, causing her to look at him before looking at the shower head. She swore quietly, realising she had moved it over the edge of the bath and soaked through her jeans. When she held it back over the bath, she breathed deeply. Zeus sat down again and let Callas continue. Would she have to be in a relationship with Embry for the rest of her life? Would she ever have feelings for someone else? Or was there a 'pull' towards Embry that she wouldn't be able to ignore? Once again, she knew that she would have to ask Emily at some point. Callas doubted that she could ask Embry himself, he might not even know, or he might think that she was rejecting him, and would try to do something drastic. Would she reject him, though? Did she want this? Callas wasn't so sure about anything, and getting into a relationship was the least of her worries at the moment with a nomad vampire terrorising her. Pulling her out of her thoughts, there was a knock on the door.
"What do you want, Reed? I'm busy," Callas spoke in a monotone voice.
The door opened with a creak. "It's, uh, it's not Reed."
