43| DESPITE THE CIRCUMSTANCES

Callas was more than ready to leave the hospital when Reed came back with a duffle bag stuffed with some of her clothes, including her laptop and chargers, just in case she wanted to finish off any more work—although she had completed most of it, aside from Maths. She had carefully taken a shower, minding the bandage on her forehead, to get rid of the lingering hospital smell of hand sanitiser and cleaning supplies, and she was equally thrilled to finally brush her teeth. Reed had even managed to pick up their father's old flight jacket, that Callas had hooked on the back of her bedroom door, for her to wear out, along with the hood of her hoodie pulled over her head, as Forks never seemed to fail on the rainy weather and frigid wind—especially so close to winter. She also said a small hello to Silas and Anya before leaving. It was obvious that Anya wasn't pleased with the fact that Callas had got hurt, but she seemed to understand more of the situation than Callas did, and let it slide, while Silas threatened to get out of his bed and find Will himself. Which, although was very sweet, made Callas's blood pressure rise when she watched him sit up shakily and in some pain. She thanked Carlisle before leaving as well. Both of them opted to rush out of the reception area to avoid Amy at all costs too.

Once in the Jeep, that Jared drove to the hospital after checking their house the night before, Reed turned on the heating. Callas placed her bag in the back seat of the Jeep and put her seatbelt on, waiting for Reed to start the engine and pull out of the godforsaken place she had been trapped in. The rain hadn't stopped since Jacob had dropped both of them off at the hospital, in fact, it seemed to have worsened. She could tell that Reed wanted to say something to her, as his mouth opened and closed a few times before he opted to stay silent, instead tightening his hands on the wheel, glaring out to the road in front of them as he pulled out of the hospital parking lot and turned right towards the direction of the running shop they had been to previously—which was on their way home. The silence that fell between them made her uncomfortable, especially when Reed turned left down the small road to La Push. Another twenty minutes, or more, in the Jeep, forced into the quiet lingering atmosphere, was bound to drive Callas insane. One of her books was still left in the glove compartment, but she didn't feel like getting her book out to read.

"You can ask, you know," she told him as she looked out the window, watching the rain fall, the same way it did when she went to go see Henry at the hospital.

     "Ask what?"

"Whatever it is that you've been trying to ask me."

     "There's nothing I want to—"

"You resembled a fish out of water a second ago. There is something you want to ask me."

"Are you going to be okay? Staying at Sam's, I mean."

"You mean my mortal enemy who stole you from me? Maybe." She shrugged. "You'll be there though, right?" Callas looked over to him hopefully.

He cleared his throat. "Yeah. I'll be there."

"Besides, I don't actually have to talk to him, do I?"

Reed chuckled to himself. "I don't know about that."

     "Emily will be there, right?"

"Yeah, I mean, she does live there, and the boys will be there sometimes as well."

     "Okay."

Callas knew that Reed wanted to ask something else. That asking about whether she was 'okay' with staying at Sam Uley's wasn't exactly what he had wanted to ask, and she knew that. But she didn't press on the matter too much. Reed looked like he had lightened up a bit more, his grip on the wheel had loosened ever-so-slightly, which was a good thing. Her hand moved to the radio and she turned it on, lowering the volume to keep it as a background noise, just faintly heard over the rain pelting on the Jeep roof. Callas was tempted to turn the wheel left when they reached the road that turned down to their house, but she thought better than that and sat back in her chair. With her hands shoved in the pockets of her jumper, she put her feet up on the dashboard. Reed seemed to slow down near their road, possibly thinking the same thing as she was, but he powered ahead and continued to drive. Faintly, she remembered Seth explaining to her that Emily lived near the beach, that her house was almost completely surrounded by the forest. At least she'd be able to go to the beach while she was on 'Uley house lock down'.

Reed turned in the opposite direction from the school, turning down the road that led towards Jacobs house. Callas didn't bother asking how much longer they were going to be stuck driving for, so, she settled for resting her head on her arm as she looked out the window. Just before they got to Jacobs house, Reed turned left again until the asphalt turned into a dirt clotted road with small stones and rocks covering the ground. Callas could tell that they were getting nearer to the beach when she saw, over the tree line as they drove down a small hill, that the water was getting closer. She sat up more, excited to see Zeus again. When Reed slowed down, Callas noticed a light blue coloured truck with a white roof outside the relatively small house, underneath the large metal shelter that was covered in fallen branches and moss. She noticed Sam standing along the porch as Reed cut the engine. Slowly, Callas got out of the Jeep, keeping a close eye on Sam as she neared the house. Sam watched silently as Reed pulled Callas's bag out from the back of the Jeep, slamming the door shut. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Emily open the glass sliding doors, smiling at Callas as she opened her arms out to her, welcoming Callas warmly.

Before Emily could get to Callas, loud barking and heavy pounding thuds emerged from the house. Zeus quickly brushed passed Sam and Emily to jump up at Callas, leaving small wet, muddy paw prints over her white hoodie. He began to rub his head over her, almost trying to rub his smell back on her clothes to cover the smell of disinfectant from the hospital. Reed whistled for him and patted the side of his leg, gaining Zeus's attention away from Callas. Reluctantly, Zeus side-eyes Reed, then Callas again, before he pushed off her, trotting over to Reed as he made his way to the porch, carrying the duffle bag back over his shoulder. Just as Reed passed Emily, he gave her a warm smile, nodding his head at Sam. Emily told him that she made sure to leave him some coffee and that it was in the pot. She then turned back to Callas, stepping closer once more before Seth, who was all smiles and full of energy, managed to get out of the doorway as both Reed and Zeus got in, running towards Callas, pulling her into a tight hug. Callas stumbled back with wide eyes, wrapping her own arms around him gently as he squeezed her.

"I missed you," he told her while twisting their bodies left-to-right in the hug.

"You were with me the entire time I was in the hospital," she reminded him, laughing quietly.

"I know, I just missed you."

Emily finally managed to tear Seth away from Callas long enough to engulf her in a more gentler embrace. "I'm sorry about the inconvenience of all this, but despite the circumstances, I'm glad that you're going to be spending some time with us." Emily smiled sweetly as Callas hugged her back.

"I'm sorry about my behaviour at the bonfire," Callas apologised softly, hoping that Emily didn't think badly of her for it.

But Emily waved her off once she pulled away from Callas. "It's okay, I deal with worse behaviour from the boys on a daily basis."

Sam now walked over, wrapping his arm around Emily's shoulder, kissing the side of her head. Callas continued to stand outside. Sam furrowed his eyebrows at her. "Why aren't you going inside?" He asked in a gruff voice.

"Well, unlike you, I was raised with manners and know that unless I was invited in, I don't intrude into someone's house like a Neanderthal," Callas responded.

Emily silently laughed to herself, motioning her arm to the house. "You can go in, Cal."

Callas nodded her head at her before glaring at Sam, moving past both of them to walk inside. The smell of freshly baked goods enticed her senses, it was a smell she hadn't known for almost a week with Anya being at the hospital with Silas. Embry turned around in his chair when he heard her walk in, he held out a blueberry muffin to her as she stepped closer. Paul, Jared, and Quil were also sitting at the table, seemingly stuffing their faces with food like it was the first time they had ever had anything to eat. Emily and Sam walked in, their arms still wrapped lovingly around the other as they watched them. Emily leaned her head against Sam. Zeus moved away from Reed and walked over to Callas, sitting directly beside her, almost sitting on part of her shoe as he panted. Callas pointed to all of the food on the table, and the extra food that was left on the side of the kitchen counter covered nearly by a layer of cling film. The look on her face showed that she was confused but no one had said anything, it was almost as if they were waiting for her to ask about it instead, so that was what she did.

"Why is there so much food?"

Reed, being the smartass he was, called from his spot on the sofa, "We're growing boys." He smirked. Callas's eye twitched as she looked over to him, remembering when he said it to her before everything had happened, stealing a piece of her breakfast bacon for himself that morning.

Huffing to herself, Callas took the muffin from Embry, that he was still holding out to her, and broke a piece of it off, biting into the warm muffin. From behind her, definitely scaring her, although without meaning to, Seth spoke up, "They're good, aren't they?"

Callas jumped, turning around to face him, almost choking on the piece of food that was in her mouth. Zeus got up slightly at her movement and made a small noise at Seth, almost like a warning for him to not do it again. With a shrug, Seth took the rest of the muffin from her hand and sat down at the table in between Embry and Quil. Callas shook her head, swallowing the rest of the food in her mouth, moving towards the sofa where Reed was. She sat down next to him, watching as Zeus jumped up on the sofa—that was covered in an old knitted blanket of cabin styled colours and patterns—and laid his head down on her lap, wagging his tail lightly before he let out a small sigh. Which sounded more like he was sighing through his nose. Sam, letting go of Emily, walked over to where Reed and Callas was, sitting down on the large single sofa, that he seemed to fit in perfectly, while Emily sat down on the arm of the chair, laying her right arm around his shoulders and her left hand was rested on his left upper arm. Sam cleared his throat, feeling somewhat uncomfortable that Callas was just glaring at him.

Sensing the tension, Reed wrapped his right arm around the back of the sofa, behind Callas, picking at the fraying fabric of the soft brown sofa. Seth quickly got up at the same time as Embry and sat down next to Callas before he could, petting Zeus, as Sam opened his mouth a few times before closing it. Callas hoped that he was going to explain a few things to her about what was going on. Although Embry did say that he might not, so she tried not to get her hopes up. Embry slapped the back of Seth's head as he walked behind the sofa, sitting on the other sofa that was up against the wall. It wasn't long before the others moved away from the small circular table they had been sitting at previously and migrated to the sofas. There was something, although it was lost to Callas, that they weren't telling her, something that everyone, including Emily, had known about. She wanted to scream. She wanted to just yell at them to get them to tell her what it was that they were keeping from her. Sam moved around on the chair, scratching the back of his neck before he opened his mouth.

     "So..."

"For the love of God, what is it?" Callas groaned.

"Well," Sam started, clearing his throat. "What do you know so far?"

"Really, Samuel, really? I know nothing. Not Jon Snow nothing, but quite literally nothing." Sam nodded his head, understanding her frustration. "Is that going to change?" But he didn't respond.

As they all settled in, the glass sliding doors opened once more. It was raining still, and Callas could faintly hear the rumbling and roaring of thunder out by the coast. The sun had set and it had darkened outside, but the warm glow of the lights around the room made Callas forget that time was moving past them. She turned her head to face the door and noticed Jacob walked in, holding his motorbike keys in his right hand, his brown leather jacket was dripping water onto the wooden floor boards. His shirt was damp, and so was his hair, from what Callas was able to make out. It looked like he had been breathing heavily, running instead of taking his motorbike. It worried her. Especially when his eyes had been focused on Sam the moment he walked in, his eyes were devoid of light and looked dull. Sam turned his head to looked at him. Jacob was the last one to arrive out of everyone.

"The Cullens agreed," was all he said through his heavy breathing.

Callas, not understand what he meant, turned to look at Reed. "What's he talking about?"
