3| ROUTINE

Her alarm started to go off, pulling Callas out of her dream state and back into reality. With a soft groan, she rolled over to her side, placing her hand lazily onto her alarm to turn it off, her eyes still shut. She knew she had to open them at some point, but in that moment of time, she wasn't ready. It was Monday, the first day she would be attending La Push High School. She really hoped she wouldn't get lost, or stick out like a sore thumb. That's the one thing she didn't overly like about starting a new school, being the centre of attention, especially if she had nowhere to hide.

Callas slowly opened her eyes, staring at her father's black flight jacket that still hung on the wardrobe door knobs. Her room was one out of the four that were upstairs, along with Reed's and the two bathrooms. Reed decided to let Callas have the room with the ensuite, claiming that she needed more privacy than he did. She wasn't one to complain about that. Her bedroom resided at the back of the house that overlooked the garden, but it wasn't really a garden, it was more of an open space that led to the forest. All the houses down the small road pretty much shared the same garden as there were no fences to separate them.

She sat up, rubbing her eyes before she looked at her, almost, finished room. The floors were a semi-dark oak colour while the walls were a cream colour. Opposite her large bed, she had a bay window, Anya had left some cushions on it for her along with a round knitted pouf on the floor. Callas was sure that the area had been an extension on the house, as the middle of the room from the window to the bed had come into the room about one-quarter of the way on each side, leaving the window area to be slightly smaller than the rest of the room. Although both walls that came in were slightly indented with book shelves, which Callas had been happy about.

Either side of her bed she had old wooden bedside tables. At the end of her bed, there was an end chest with even more books inside, ones that didn't fit on the shelves. Just before the smaller area of her room, in the corner, on the left-hand side she had a desk, an upholstered old chair that Silas probably hoarded and couldn't get rid of, she still needed to set up her computer, but it was still in the trailer outside. On the right-hand side, in the other corner, opposite the desk, there was a built-in wardrobe, with her bedroom door closer to the other side of the right-hand wall, while her bathroom door was on the left-hand side along the wall of her bed.

She remembered that her father once told her that Silas had designed the house for Anya when they first got married, which Callas thought was very sweet of him. But as they were much older now, and struggled to get up the stairs like they used to, they moved their room to one of the downstairs rooms near the back left-hand side of the house. Which made it easier for them to get around, as they didn't necessarily need to go up the stairs to any of the rooms.

Her alarm went off again, making her jump. She turned it off, it was only six in the morning, but she wanted to have a shower before she left for school. She, reluctantly, got out of her warm bed, shivering as the cold air nipped at her skin. With her eyebrows furrowed, she looked towards the window, it was open again. Deciding that she'd rather not freeze in the cold weather, that the late autumn of La Push had to offer, she quickly walked over and closed it, making sure to lock it before she opened the blackout curtains to let the light in, leaving the lace curtains closed.

As she turned back around, she picked up the towels Anya had left on the end chest, walking towards the bathroom to have a well-needed shower. With her eyes closed, she enjoyed the warmth of the water running down her cold body, it was at times like this that she wished she had Reed's abnormal body heat. Maybe she should find a heater, or at least get the lock on the window checked out because she was certain that she had locked it and left it closed before she went to bed. She never remembered opening it in the first place, it was too cold for her to even want to.

She knew she had to get out at some point, after all, she was just standing underneath the water for a good twenty minutes after she finished cleaning the cold sweat off her body and washed her messy hair. She quickly brushed her teeth before making her way out of the bathroom to pick out her clothes. She dried her hair before picking up her bag and her father's flight jacket to wear later before she left. She went downstairs, the smell of bacon and eggs made her stomach grumble.

"Hungry?" Anya laughed from in the kitchen.

Silas was back in his old single sofa recliner, the newest newspaper in his hand, Zeus back by his legs, although, this time he was sleeping as the fireplace crackled and burned. Silas glanced up at her and smiled.

     "Morning, Pumpkin. Sleep well?"

Callas nodded her head. "Yeah, it was a bit cold, though." She laughed lightly.

"That's the winter weather coming in from the sea, only bad thing about living by one is the cold it brings during the winter," he commented as he stood up carefully, trying not to step on Zeus.

"Yeah, I've noticed, especially with the window always being open." Callas walked into the kitchen, greeting Anya with a hug before she took the plate from her and went to sit down in her spot.

"Why'd you open it then?" Silas raised an eyebrow.

"I didn't. In fact, I remembered locking it. Maybe the lock is broken, but I definitely know I locked it and left it closed." She shook her head as she picked up her fork while Anya placed her cup of coffee down in front of her, as well as Reed's, even though he wasn't down yet.

"I don't think the lock is broken." Silas thought about it. "I'm pretty sure we had Billy's kid come around to make sure they were all secure." He glanced an Anya for confirmation, she just nodded.

"Who's Billy?" Reed asked as he walked in, scratching his bare chest.

"William Black. You remember him, don't you?" Silas asked Reed as he looked up from his folded newspaper. Reed paused for a moment.

"Oh! The twins, Rachel and Rebecca's, Dad. He had a son, right? He was around the same age as Callas was when we left." Reed kissed Anya's cheek before taking the plate, sitting down by Callas.

"That's the one. He used to tell you about the legends when we had bonfires down behind his house. His youngest is Jacob, he's a nice young man. He goes to La Push with his friends, maybe you might meet him there." Silas looked back to Callas.

She simply nodded her head, not really knowing what to say. She didn't remember Jacob that much, maybe those six years being here before with him proved to be very unimpressionable, unlike the waters which stole toys away from unsuspecting children while they played. But then again, she was only young and probably didn't see many other children around as she was always with Reed and they did leave when she was young, just slightly over ten years ago. So, there could be a chance that she remembers a bit more about him if they met. But by that time, when they left, Callas had already met a lot of new people, she made more friends, who she still sometimes keeps in touch with.

"I remember the bonfires, it was one of my favourite things to go to." Reed grinned with the shake of his head. Callas watched him.

"You always got so engrossed in the legends, you would pull the strangest facial expressions as you listened to them." The sound of Silas' laugh had caused Anya to laugh as well.

"They were interesting, probably still are. Does Billy still talk about the legends at the bonfires?"

"Almost every other week." Silas nodded his head.

"Maybe I'll go pay a visit the next time he has one."

"You should." Silas nodded again. "I don't think there is one this week, but I'll ask and let you know."

     "Sounds good to me."

Callas continued to eat, she could already feel a routine coming out of this. She would always wake up from the same weird dream to the same open window, she would go downstairs to see Silas in the same chair, with a newspaper in his hand and Zeus by his legs, with Anya cooking in the kitchen, answering the same question, sitting in the same seat, with Reed coming in with the same tired eyes and mop of hair and sitting in the same seat beside her. She wasn't sure if she would slowly end up going insane due to the repetition, or find tranquility from it.

"Thank you—" Reed's words dragged out as he spoke with his mouth full while he stole a piece of bacon from Callas' plate with his fork.

"Excuse me, Reed, do I need to remind you what Nana said yesterday?" Callas asked while Reed choked on the scrambled eggs and bacon shoved in his mouth, as he laughed.

"No," he tried to speak with the food almost falling out of his mouth.

"Close your mouth, dear, we don't need to see what's in your mouth, we already know what you put in there." Anya pulled a face as she placed a cup of coffee in front of Silas.

"I'm a—" Reed started before he held a finger up, chewing the rest of his food before he could swallow and continue, "I'm a growing boy, I need my protein."

"'Growing b—'" Callas's eye twitched. "How much taller could you possibly get?" She spoke loudly, while Reed was hunched over his plate, cutting the piece of bacon up to sandwich between two slices of brown bread.

Reed pulled a face, his left-hand waving in the air to measure his height. "I'm at like mid-height right now." He shrugged.

"You're almost six foot, Reed! What do you mean 'mid-height'? Honestly, what are you on?"

Reed laughed again, eating almost half of the sandwich in one go. Callas waved him off and continued to eat her own breakfast. Reed somehow always found a new way to amaze Callas, although the amazement wasn't always a good one. Anya smiled at the both of them before she sat down with a book, Silas and herself had eaten before the two of them came downstairs to have their own.

"I'm driving you to school but Gramps will pick you up," Reed informed her as they both finished up their breakfast and coffee.

"I'm guessing one of the fishing buddies had a job open then? That was quick," Callas asked, not directing it at either, but more as a general question.

"Yeah, Billy told me about the Chief down at the Forks Police Station who could use another officer." Silas nodded as Reed picked up both of their plates, Callas picking up the cups.

"That's good, at least you got the job."

"Yeah, apparently I was the only one who went for the job, but that's good for me." Reed shrugged before he went upstairs to get ready.

Callas checked her phone, it was already seven, and she needed to be there for eight, so she had plenty of time, Reed would only take about fifteen minutes. She quickly went upstairs to brush her teeth again, just so she didn't have random pieces of food stuck in her teeth throughout the day. When she walked out of her bathroom she made sure that the window was locked before she headed downstairs, waiting on Reed to drive her to school. The day hadn't even started yet, and Callas could already feel the school sucking the life out of her. She just wanted to have a quiet day.
