28| DATES AND SETTING DATES

It was the end of forth period. Callas was stuck inside the Maths classroom as her teacher droned on about the homework—which she hadn't done at all. Embry had been waiting outside of Callas's Maths classroom for her, he was sitting on the ground with his legs bent up, his arms resting on the tops of his knees. When the bell went, Callas quickly packed up her bag, not wanting to listen to the teacher talk for any longer than she had been, putting her flight jacket on as she walked to the door. Just as Callas stepped out of the classroom, Embry stood up, smiling at her, she raised her eyebrows with a smile before following him out the front doors of the school. A few other students ended around this time as well. Callas would usually be getting a ride home with Silas, but she had called him up during her cancelled Biology lesson and told him not to bother, Embry would be dropping her off. Anya overheard and got very excited about the prospect of Embry asking her out on more dates if this one went well. It took almost half an hour for Anya to calm down and let Callas hang up and get on with some work.

Embry pulled keys out of his pocket and unlocked the truck next to Jacobs. Callas raised an eyebrow, questioningly. "I didn't know you had a truck."

"It's my mum's, she was very adamant that this went well. So, she hid my bike from me."

"Maybe your mum and Anya should get together sometime. It's all she spoke about during my free."

He turned his head to her. "I didn't know you had a free today."

"Yeah, Biology was cancelled because her sister was getting married or something like that." She waved her hand and got into the passenger's side.

"Founds like fun."

Callas hummed, then something dawned on her, "If your mum has a truck, then why didn't you take this the night you came over to my house?"

"I'm pretty sure my mum would have woken up, you know, crazy mum hearing and all. I thought my bike would have been the quieter option. But considering that I got caught anyway, I probably could have taken the truck."

"I still can't believe that you rode your bike to my house and night for a ten-minute conversation." Callas shook her head with a light laugh.

"Why?"

Callas smiled and raised an eyebrow. "Because it's such a spontaneous thing to do."

Embry shrugged. "I didn't mind risking my life, on my bike at night, to go see you."

A blush drew over her face as he started up the truck, reversing out of the parking lot and driving towards the cafe. Embry didn't seem to process what he had just said to her with much thought. Callas bit her lip with a smile, no one had ever 'risked their life' to go see her, even if it was just for a few minutes, and even then, the conversation wasn't based on them but rather her best friend. It was only ten-past-one by the time they left the school. Embry turned up the heating slightly, glancing over at Callas, who was staring out the window at the trees. A smile rose to his lips as one formed on hers. Callas had only ever been along the road when they were driving back from the beach. Embry wasn't sure if he should put the radio on or just sit in silence. He was never usually this nervous, but thankfully Callas broke the silence.

"Is cliff diving really a thing?"

"What do you mean?"

Callas turned to look at him. "I mean, do people still do it around here?"

"Yeah." He nodded, glancing at her before looking back at the road. "The guys and I go every now and again. Why?"

She shrugged. "My dad used to talk about it, he said he missed the La Push's cliffs because they were the best to dive from. Bit of an adrenaline junkie, if you ask me."

"You wouldn't want to do it?"

"Maybe. Given the right circumstances."

"Elaborate." Embry chuckled.

"I wouldn't want to do it alone, or when the waves are really strong."

He nodded with a hum. "The next time the guys want to go, I'll take you. You know, if you wanted to tag along."

"But wouldn't it be just a group thing?"

"You'll be an honorary bro." He shrugged.

"So, I'm a bro, now?"

Embry pulled a face. "To Seth maybe, he's still in the 'bro' phase. Sam hates it."

"What about you?"

"Oh, I hate it too, I mean—"

"No." She laughed. "What am I to you?"

"Well, you're not my bro, that's for sure."

"Should I be offended or—"

"No." He shook his head. "Definitely not offended." Embry glanced over to her. "Unless you want to be a bro?"

"Not really."

"Can I stop saying it now? I'm going to gag."

Callas laughed quietly, nodding her head at him. "Please."

"Good."

"So, it would be okay if I went?"

Embry licked his bottom lip. "Yeah, I think Paul might challenge you, but I'll keep you safe."

"My hero." She rolled her eyes. "I haven't met Sam yet, but I feel like I'll be terrified of him."

"He'll lighten up the more you get to know him, it's not like you're a complete stranger to him."

"Oh? And why's that?"

"The guys and—"

"The guys? Or you?"

He closed his mouth, scratching the back of his neck as he tried to suppress a nervous chuckle, Callas watched him as he replied, "You're ruining my street cred here, Cal."

She snorted a laugh. "What street cred?"

Embry fake gasped, looking offended. "Hey!"

"For what it's worth, you have more street cred than Jake."

"That makes me feel a little better."

"Jared too, maybe Paul."

"What about Seth and Quil?"

"Nah, they're my boys."

"So, what am I?"

Callas raised an eyebrow, shrugging one shoulder. "We'll see."

Embry shook his head, trying to stop his smile from widening. He drove passed the beach, the waves were knocking against each other as they crashed into the shore, soaking up the sand and black stones around the bouldering rocks, covered in seaweed and driftwood. Callas glanced back towards the cliffs, part of the cliff had two levels jutting out, one closer to the water and one higher up. There was no doubt in her mind that the boys tended to favour the higher cliff, but she wasn't brave enough to jump ahead to that one just yet, even the lower one intimidated her and she wasn't even near it. If she was to go cliff diving, she knew she would probably have a heart attack just walking up to the platform area. Maybe she'd reach enlightenment and all of her problems would melt away like the sea foam, or maybe she'd be stuck in the cycle of samsara, although she doubted it, she wasn't very religious. If she was, she wouldn't be a Buddhist, her books meant too much to her, she wouldn't be able to let go of her most prized possessions to reach Nirvana. Maybe the next life.

With a smirk on his face, Embry picked up speed. The beach soon disappeared from sight and the trees zoomed passed her eyes, Callas had a hard time keeping up with them and so she kept her gaze forward, watching as the road passed underneath the truck and the small shopping area came to view in the distance. Embry, once they reached the shopping area, pulled the truck into one of the small parking areas around the side of the cafe. He parked the truck up and turned off the engine. It was a small building with bright coloured bricks, a pointed roof and small plant pots, with tiny flowers and red berries, grew underneath the windows, some along the ledges. She got out of the truck and closed the door, walking around the truck to meet Embry as he locked the door and guided her to the front door. There didn't seem to be many people inside, apart from a few old couples and one woman with her little boy.

"Are you excited to go to the bonfire tomorrow?" Embry asked as he opened the door to the cafe, holding the door open for her.

She nodded her head. "Yeah, I know Reed is, he used to be obsessed with the legends, I think he still is actually. I don't really remember them, all I remember is that wolves are involved." She shrugged as Embry led them to one of the tables near the window.

"Something like that. Well, you know, if you're still going tomorrow, you'll be able to jog your memory."

"Yeah," she agreed, hopefully. "So, who's going tomorrow? Who I haven't met?"

"All of our parents will be there, Sam and Emily should also be joining us, they might be some of the first people there, you'll finally meet Leah if she shows up," he pointed out. "Some other tribe members will be joining as well."

"Sounds good to me." She nodded. "It's about time I meet her."

Embry chuckled as they sat down. "I still don't understand how you haven't met."

"It's a mystery." A woman with two menus walked over, smiling as she set them down, walking over to the woman with her child to hand over a coffee and chocolate milkshake.

"Oh, also, the dance," Embry exclaimed slightly louder than they both would have liked, he ducked his head down, glancing at the few people who looked at him before they turned away.

"What dance?" Callas laughed quietly, watching Embry sit up more.

He pulled his head back with an 'are you kidding me?' expression. "Have you seriously not seen the posters around school?"

She shook her head. "After I saw a detailed poster diagram of the digestive system I swore to never look at the walls again." She shuddered.

"That makes more sense." He opened up the menu before he placed it down on the table, his arms crossed leaning on top of it. "Have you seriously not heard about the dance?"

Callas wasn't sure why he was so shocked. "Nope. I'm either reading a book, talking to Henry or one of the other boys, or I'm doing work."

"Amazing," he muttered, shaking his head. Soon, a small chuckle left his lips. "Okay, well, considering how you don't know about it, shall I tell you about it?"

"Go ahead, although, I'm not sure why it's so important." She shrugged.

"Well, it's next week, just before we have half term," he told her, glancing down at the menu. "I'm not sure if it's themed, I'm guessing it is, I'm sure it's themed, it has to be," he trailed off.

"Em." Callas clicked her fingers in his face.

"Right." He shook his head. "It may or may not be themed," he told her.

"That sounds great," she replied sarcastically. "Any reason why you're telling me about themes?"

"I, uh, wanted to know if you were going?"

She hummed, thinking about it. "I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have known about it until the day after it happened," she mumbled. "Are you going?" She asked.

"That depends."

"On?"

"If... you agree to go... with me." He awkwardly pointed to himself, stuttering over his words as he quietened down, nervous to hear her answer.

Callas brought the menu to her face, a shy smile spreading to a wide grin, she peaked over the top of the menu before she placed it down on the table, clearing her throat. "I would, uh, yes," she started, nodding her head. "Yes, I will go with you." Her eyes cast down to the table.

"Really?"

She hummed, "Yes."

"Great." He lit up with a grin. "I was worried someone else would have asked you."

"Like who?"

"Well, Henry for starters."

"He's still in the hospital, so, I don't think he'd be up for dancing in a week."

"Right." He nodded his head. "Makes sense."

"I'm going to warn you now, I can't dance."

He smiled at her. "Neither can I."

Callas smiled back, looking down at the menu once more, deciding to pick out a milkshake. Embry ordered his own milkshake as well, claiming he was jealous of the milkshake the little boy had. They stayed in the small cafe for a couple of hours, just talking. It was a nice escape for her, she didn't feel on edge or that she was being watched while she was around him. It was a change of pace. One that Callas had longed for in the past couple of days since she came back home to La Push, one that she longed for since her nightmares had surfaced and resurfaced, it was as if Embry had managed to block all of it away with just his presence. She was thankful for that. The cafe had seen a few people come and go, but Embry and Callas had stayed in the warmth of the wall sconces' glow, a soft hue of gold hitting the wooden beams along the roof. The sun had long set, and the dark clouds rolled on overhead, the air outside had turned cold, and the cafe was about to close.

"It's getting late," Embry commented as he looked at his watch. "And we have school tomorrow."

"Yeah, I know." She sighed softly.

Embry placed some money on the table, sliding out from the chair. Callas followed and stood up, picking her dad's jacket up from around the back of her chair, putting it on. He smiled at her as they both walked to the door, Embry opened it, the small bell chimed through the cafe as they walked out. She brought her jacket closer to her as the wind picked up. Embry noticed and wrapped his arm around her, pulling her body to the warmth of his own, it radiated off him like he was his own personal sun. Unlocking the truck, Embry made sure to keep the heater on as they got in. Callas slid over to him along the seat, wrapping her arms around his right arm, shivering slightly as her body slowly warmed up. As the truck pulled out of the parking lot, she saw the dashboard light up in a soft green colour. The road seemed longer at night, with only the headlights of the truck and the golden-white glow of the moon hitting the road in front of them. They stayed silent, comfortable in each other's presence, neither of them feeling the need to talk.

When Embry finally pulled into the small road and drove up outside of Callas's house, she noticed the lights were still on. It was almost nine when they stopped just in front of Reed's Jeep. Callas pulled away from Embry, unhooking her arms from him as she pushed open the passenger side door. He got out as well, walking her up to the door, his hand found hers as they walked up the small steps of the porch, standing just outside of the door, underneath the front porch lamp. Embry turned to face her, his warm hand still encased around hers, and he swallowed. She looked up at him as he leaned his head down to her, she slowly tiptoed to meet him halfway, a soft smile on her lips. But the door swung open. Reed leaned against the doorframe with a grin, holding a cup of coffee up to his lips. Embry pulled his head back, standing straighter as he looked passed Callas's head with an annoyed expression, slightly hidden behind a forced smile.

A sigh left her lips as she closed her eyes, suppressing a groan before she opened her eyes again to look at Reed. He was still grinning when he pulled the cup away from his lips. "So, how'd the date go?" Embry turned his head to look away from Reed, glancing at the other houses on the road. Callas's eyes moved to look at Embry, she saw a light blush on his face, illuminated by the dim light, and the grin he had to bite back. Their hands were still linked together as Callas tilted her head to Reed once more, a hard glare on her face. He shrugged before asking in a playful tone, "Good?"
