13| A LOOK INTO THE PAST

It was Thursday. Callas had ignored the texts from Jacob and the others, not wanting to talk to them for a while. She knew she was being mean ignoring everyone when it was just Paul that she was having a problem with. He didn't even text to apologise for his behaviour, maybe he really didn't think he had done anything wrong, like Quil had mentioned about him. She made sure to avoid them the entire day, although third period with Embry, during Chemistry, was rather difficult as it was a paired work activity. She kept the talking to a minimum, making sure to avoid all canteen talk if he brought it up by talking about the class work.

Callas spent the entire day with Henry. Even during first period when they had P.E. she made sure to stay clear of Quil and Jared. Henry didn't pick up on her cold attitude towards them, he was rather content with being the centre of Callas's attention, all he did was try to make her happy. That was all that seemed to matter to him. Or, maybe he did pick up on it, but he never said anything. Instead, he stuck by her side, cracking jokes to see her smile. If it wasn't for her heavy crush on Embry, she might have liked Henry as more than a friend, which was a bit weird to think about.

Her main focus was the History project, and nothing else. It was the last period, she had a free, but Henry had English, so she sat on the floor reading her book. Just like he did on her first day. The corridors were silent until the sound of shoes scuffing against the floor made her peer up from her page. Embry paused, looking at her with a small smile before he pointed to the floor next to her, she sighed and nodded. She bookmarked her page and put the book in her bag, one day she was going to be able to read without interruptions, but it clearly wasn't that day.

"Are you angry with me?" Embry asked nervously, not daring to look at her.

"No." She shook her head, keeping her gaze on the ground.

"Because I'm trying to think of what I've done to make you ignore me."

"It's not you," she told him quietly. "I just don't understand why Paul is so mean to someone he didn't bother to get to know."

"It's not really my place to say," Embry replied.

"But you know what his issue is? With Henry?" He nodded. "Couldn't you just tell me something?"

Embry sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Um... Well..." Callas huffed in annoyance.

"Or not."

"It's not that I don't want to tell you."

"It's just not your place to say." Embry nodded sadly at her.

"Yeah."

"That's fine, it's not really my place to ask anyway." She picked at the zip of her flight jacket.

"So, you're not angry with me?" He asked again, just to be sure.

Callas smiled lightly and looked over at him, his eyes were still trained on the ground. "No, I'm not."

"Good." He nodded. "Because I was worried that you hated me after what happened at lunch, I couldn't figure out why you ignored me during Chem." He glanced over, she quickly looked away.

"It wasn't easy," she whispered out. "I just needed to think for a while, I was upset that I was friends with people who could barely stand the name of the other."

"Was friends?" Embry questioned. "Are you and Henry not...?"

"Bad word choice." She closed her eyes with a small smile. "I didn't mean it like that. Henry and I are still friends, great friends, in fact. Pauls stubbornness isn't going to change that, he won't get to decide if I'm friends with Henry or not."

Embry nodded in understanding. It wasn't as if he liked her answer, but it was what he was stuck with. He desperately wanted to tell her everything, but he knew he couldn't, he wasn't allowed. It annoyed him that it had put a small dent in the beginning of their friendship. They had only met less than three days ago, so they were still getting used to one another. Callas felt the same way, she didn't necessarily have anything to tell him like he did with her, but she still wanted to know why one of her friends—if she considered Paul a friend at this stage—must make things so difficult. The same went for Jared, but he didn't act out during the free like Paul.

"What are you doing out of class anyway?" She looked over at him.

"I could ask the same thing." He grinned.

"Technically I ended after maths, so I could have gone home after fourth, but Henry's coming over to mine. Now your turn."

"Lesson ended early." He shrugged. "You stayed for an extra two hours?"

"Well, Henry doesn't know where I live, so we're walking together. We have to finish our History project."

Embry looked at her confused, but a smile was still on his face. "Isn't that due next week? Or the week after?"

"Yeah," she replied with her own smile. "We're just good students."

"Correction; nerds." Embry nudged her side.

"So, what are you then? A Jock?"

He laughed and shook his head. "I'd go with nerd as well."

"Correction; dweeb."

"Hey..." Embry laughed and gave her a mock hurt expression. "Go easy on me."

"I can only go easy on one person at a time, and Seth's that person."

"Lucky Seth." Embry leaned against the wall behind them, his arms crossed as he looked at Callas. Callas hummed in response. The bell rang a while later, she picked her bag up, grabbing her jacket as she stood up. "I'll, uh, talk to you later." Embry placed his hand on her arm.

"Yeah, talk to you later." She smiled as he picked up his own bag, walking down the corridor away from her.

Callas turned back around as the door opened. Teenagers flooded out quickly, wanting to get home. Callas caught sight of Henry, she grabbed his arm and pulled him towards her and out of the wave of the other students. He seemed shocked at first but soon smiled as he was face to face with her. She smiled back. Henry put his bag on his shoulders and began walking next to her as they made their way out of the school. She struggled to put her jacket on, not realising that the weather wasn't very warm when they stepped out, Henry chuckled at her. He took her bag and let her put the jacket on before she took the bag back.

"That was interesting to watch." Henry laughed as they walked down the front steps and into the parking lot.

"It was interesting to perform," she replied.

They walked passed Embry and the others. Paul was still glaring at Henry, Quil placed a hand on his chest pushing him back as he went to stalk towards them. Callas's jaw tightened in annoyance as she pulled Henry along with her quicker, wanting to get away from them. He didn't seem to mind much—with Callas's arm slightly linked with his left as they walked out of the parking lot, turning left. She let her arm fall back to her side as they continued to walk. Henry brought up the History lesson from Wednesday morning, and how Mr Hanson sent him an email with links to more documentaries seeing as he was 'so passionate' about the one during class, Henry told her that he couldn't find any other emails from teachers because of how many Mr Hanson sent him in a row.

Reed wasn't there when they got back to the house, having to work later than usual. She already knew he wasn't going to be there, but it was still a shame that he wouldn't get to meet Henry. When they walked in, Zeus immediately went over to Callas, waiting for her to pet him, but seemed to keep a distance from Henry. She apologised, saying Zeus was usually happy to meet new people, but Henry said it was fine, he wasn't the biggest fan of dogs. Anya greeted him with a warm smile, restraining herself from hugging the poor boy like she initially wanted to do. She was happy to meet one of Callas's new friends. But Silas was another story.

Silas's reaction to Henry was strange, to say the least. He didn't get up from his single sofa, he simply nodded his head with a small hello before shivering. Anya noticed and turned the fireplace on. He greeted Callas before Henry and herself made their way to the stairs. Henry kindly declined the offer to stay for dinner, saying he would be having dinner with his father. When they got upstairs to her room, Henry chuckled at the masses of books scattered all over the room. He placed his bag on the end chest of her bed and looked towards the book shelves.

"Have you read all of them?"

"Almost," Callas responded with a grin.

"How long did it take you?"

"I read them over a few years, but I like to read, so it doesn't usually take long." She shrugged as she moved over to her desk.

Henry sat down on the edge of her bed. "Was your granddad okay with me coming over? I don't think he likes me very much."

"I just think he's protective, he'll warm up to you." She brought another chair for Henry to sit on from Reed's room.

"Ready to go back into the past?" Henry sat down next to her, getting out his notes from his bag.

"It's now or never." She shook her head as she got the computer started up.

"Well, it's now or anytime during the next two weeks," he joked.

"Ha, ha, you really know how to be the life of the party, Hen."

"That I do, Cally, that I do." He nodded.

It turned out that Henry had sent her a lot more work through emails. He gave her a sheepish smile as her jaw dropped slightly at the length of the work. With a stifled laugh, he sat back, rather impressed with himself, as Callas read through the work, adding it into the work she already put together. They debated on having some sort of model to add with their written work, Henry wanted to get costumes and wear them, but Callas questioned the importance and necessity of the costumes. He laughed and took over the keyboard, giggling to himself as he googled images of costumes.

"I want to see you dressed as that," he told her with a laugh.

"As Henry VIII? Our project has nothing to do with him. Besides, your name is Henry, you should be the one to dress up as him!"

"These legs in those tights? I don't think so." He shook his head.

"Why not? I'm sure you'd look great."

Henry pulled a face at her. "I'd rather have a corset crushing my ribs than wear tights."

"Really?"

"Yeah." He nodded.

"Do you want to wear a dress too?"

"I don't think people are going to want to see a lanky boy in a dress."

"Not with that attitude they won't."
