12| CONFRONTATION
It was fourth period. Henry had English so they parted ways after their free together. They had sat outside on one of the benches together, while Henry laughed loudly at her bear story, even more so at her pained expression of the memory. She told him that she would text him after fourth so they could have lunch together. He nodded in response as made his way to English while Jacob texted her to meet him and the others in the canteen, she wasn't really looking forward to seeing Paul or Jared, not after witnessing what they did, or Embry. Still rather embarrassed about knocking him to the ground like a bowling pin and staring at him during Chemistry.
With a yawn, Callas trudged her way towards the doors of the school, shrugging her flight jacket off as she walked into the canteen. The boys were at their, seemingly territorialised, table in the canteen, near the back, directly in the centre of the back wall. Surprisingly, Quil was the one who got up and met her halfway across the canteen. Not that she expected any of them to do so. She hadn't had the time to talk to him personally, but he seemed to be one of the nicest members of the russet-coloured group of boys. She offered him a smile as he shoved his hands into his pockets of his trousers walking along with her slowly. Callas was more than confused about that.
"Hey, Quil, uh, you alright?" She chuckled nervously.
"Uh, yeah, yeah I'm good. I just wanted to apologise for the other day on behalf of Jared and Paul. Jared is kinda scared to apologise himself, and Paul is just a stubborn hothead who refuses to believe he's done anything wrong."
"So, you're the messenger?" He nodded awkwardly. "I half forgive them then."
"Half?"
"I don't understand why Jared didn't make the effort to apologise himself, and to Henry for that matter. He wasn't rude to me, he was rude to Henry. Secondly, Paul did do something wrong."
"Still not seeing why you're only half-forgiving them." He scratched the back of his neck.
"Leverage." She glanced at him.
"For?"
"A later date. It won't involve you, so you're safe from me," she told him as they sat down together. She was sat in between Embry and Quil again, just like Tuesday.
"Hell hath no fury like a woman's scorned." A boy, who Callas wasn't introduced to yet, shook his head with a grin.
"Uh..." Callas looked at Quil with an eyebrow raised.
"Seth," Jacob spoke up as he bit into an apple.
"I'm glad you're feeling better." Callas smiled at him.
"What?" Seth raised an eyebrow, looking at the others.
"Jared said that you and your sister, Leah, if I recalled correctly, were sick. You got better quickly. But that's a good thing." She smiled once more.
"Oh, yeah, I was." He nodded, awkwardly holding his right hand out in front of Quil to her. Callas shook his hand. "Leah is still feeling down, though." They let go of each other's hand.
"Tell her I said that I hope she gets better soon, it would be nice to not be the only one from the intelligent gender sitting on this table." She grinned.
"Ha, ha," Seth replied sarcastically.
"Seth is a little bit younger than all of us," Jacob informed her. "Go easy on him." He smiled as he bit into the apple again.
"I have to show who's alpha, though, Jake. Being the only girl at this table is tough work." The other boys stifled a laugh at her words.
"The, uh, the alpha?" Jacob tried hiding his grin.
"Yeah, Quil and Seth are going to be my beta's." She wrapped her right arm over Quil, trying to touch Seth's shoulders as well. "You're the runt of the litter."
"Ouch, Cal. That hurt." He pouted as he held his hand over his heart.
Callas dropped her arm off the two boys. "Suck it up, omega." She moved her bag around in front of her to get a water bottle out while Jacob glanced at the other boys knowingly with a grin.
"What am I then?" Embry asked all of a sudden, Callas froze and looked up at him.
Her voice came out quietly, almost sounding shy, "What?"
"Who am I in the pack?" He smiled at her.
"I-I—"
"Don't fluster your poor girl, Em." Jared laughed. "I think you broke her." He laughed again as Callas continued to stare at Embry with her mouth slightly open.
"Shut up, Cameron." Embry looked down to the bowl of grapes, flustered himself.
The other boys laughed and continued talking amongst themselves. She didn't know why, but Callas was thrown off at that question. Maybe it was because she was harbouring an ever-growing crush on the boy, even though she only spoke to him twice. She blinked slowly, still looking at him, it didn't register in her mind that she was just staring at Embry for the longest time. He glanced over at her, in the corner of his eye, and smiled to himself, his cheeks gaining a darker colour as he bit his bottom lip with a large smile on his face. He looked away at the table, trying to control his smile.
"So, Jacob, why'd you skip the first two periods?" Paul called out, catching Callas' attention. Jacob quickly looked over to her.
"Why's you lie to me?" Callas yelled over at him. He shrunk in his seat.
Jacob looked at her with a shy smile. "Oops."
"What's going on?" Embry raised an eyebrow at the two, leaning forwards towards the table.
Before Callas could speak, Jacob interrupted her, "I stayed at her house, just to look out for her. I checked out her window and she was freaked out about what I told her," he spoke quickly.
Embry glared at Jacob, Callas looked between the two before noticing Embry sat back steadily, his right arm going over the back of her chair. His eyes still trained on Jacob, as if they were having a silent conversation. She thought that was a bit weird. Embry nodded his head slowly at Jacob before eating one of his grapes, quickly looking over at Callas with slightly wide eyes, worried that that would have put her off him a bit as she didn't know what it was about. Callas gave him a shy smile, her cheeks being her enemy as they warmed up under his gaze. She looked away from him and at her now retrieved water bottle.
"What did you tell her?" Seth asked, rather confused.
"There were scratch marks," Jacob started, Callas put her fingers in her ears staring down at the table. "On the outside." She shook her head.
"Shut up, Jake," she hissed.
"What? He asked!" He shrugged.
She looked up, her fingers slightly out of her ears. "You could have kept quiet, dumbass."
"It's not that big of a deal."
She glared. "Oh really?"
"Nice one, Jake," Paul muttered as he sat back, watching the two of them as they stared at each other.
"I didn't mean it like that, Cal." Jacob shook his head, hurriedly.
Callas raised an eyebrow. "Then what did you mean?"
"Well, nothing actually happened," he stressed.
"But something did happen."
"You were safe, weren't you?"
"I'd hardly call you snoring in my ear, while something was outside, 'safe'."
Embry placed his hand on her back, hoping to calm her down. Which, strangely enough, worked. Callas bit her bottom lip, looking down at her water bottle, before glancing back at Embry. He gave her a gentle smile, rubbing his thumb against the material of her shirt. Callas noticed, that aside from Jacob, Embry was the only one to physically touch her, more often than anyone else at the table. She let out a sigh, glancing back at Jacob with an apologetic look on her face. He shook his head with a grin.
"You got me there, Cal." His hands raised in defence. "Sorry about that."
From the corner of her eye, Callas could see Jared pull a face at Quil. Quil cleared his throat with a nod, glancing at Paul. Each of the boys looked at each other silently, leaving Callas in the dark about what was going on between them, it was like they were having an internal conversation, although Callas somehow doubted that was the case. She decided to look back at Embry, hoping that maybe he would tell her what was going on, but he was staring intensively at Paul. She pulled a face, clearing her own throat like Quil had done.
"Can you guys read minds or something? What the hell are you doing?" Her voice broke the silence with a quiet laugh. "Can you fill me in?"
"It's nothing." Embry shook his head while his hand, that was on her back, absentmindedly went to the ends of her hair, playing with small strands.
"You sure?" She raised an eyebrow.
"I'm sure." He smiled back at her.
"Damn you two, get a room." Jared shook his head with a loud laugh. Callas's eyes widened as she looked to Jared. "Oops, sorry princess, did I say that out loud?" He chuckled.
"You've made my list." Callas squinted at him, not saying anything else while she stole a grape out of Embry's bowl.
"What list?" Jared pulled his head back confused.
"That's on a need-to-know basis. Paul is on it too." She looked towards Paul—who's smile dropped from his face as he gulped.
"What? Why? What did I do?"
"Something you don't think you've done."
"Callas that's really cryptic." He shook his head.
"Hmm..." She hummed, Paul looked rather uncomfortable.
"What?"
"Interesting." Callas was now doing it on purpose, not having any idea of where she was going with it.
"What is?"
Jacob furrowed his eyebrows at her, not knowing either. "Oh, nothing. Nothing." She gave him a smile.
"Jake, what is she talking about?" Paul looked to his left at him.
"I have no idea." He shrugged.
"But you're like best friends!"
"I can't read her mind, Paul!"
"Actually, I'm Jakes best friend," Embry piped up over the two of them.
"Yeah, and Henry's my best friend," Callas informed Paul.
Straight away she could see Paul tense up at Henry's name. She had no idea what his problem with her blond friend was, but it was beginning to annoy her. Everyone else stayed quiet on the table, glancing between the two of them as Paul slowly turned his gaze to her. Callas pushed the chair back a bit, distancing herself from Paul as much as possible. Just enough so he couldn't reach her from across the table. Embry sat forward, meaning he would be in the way of Paul getting to Callas. Paul shook slightly, his hard glare never leaving her.
"You okay, Paul?" Her voice was barely audible as she gulped.
"You're friends with him?" Paul's voice was gravely harsh.
"Yeah?" Now she wasn't so sure of herself.
"How could you be friends with him?"
"The same way these guys are friends with you, they got to know you."
"You don't know him, Callas."
"Neither do you, Paul."
"I know a lot more than you think."
"Is this something to do with the spaghetti incident last year?"
His response was the same one Jacob gave her when she asked him, "So, that's what he's referring to it as then?"
"Yeah?"
He chuckled darkly. "I wouldn't exactly say it was a spaghetti incident, more of the fact that he's a parasite."
She had enough. Callas stood up, glaring down at Paul as she put her bag over her shoulders, holding onto her water bottle and flight jacket. A scoff left her lips as she shook her head at him, he was undeniably a hothead that was for sure. Embry's jaw tightened as she pushed her seat back under the table, not saying a word before she turned back around to leave. If Paul couldn't get over himself and his petty issues, then she wasn't going to be around him. When she left the canteen, she texted Henry that she would be in the library waiting for him, she stuffed her phone into her pocket before walking into the silence of the library.
