Rage Against the Dying of the Dark Star

I blinked and my world went black. It usually does that for some strange reason. I blink. My eyelids block the light. I open my eyes again and it's as if I never knew darkness in the first place. That's what I expected this time. I blinked but when I opened my eyes again the darkness didn't disappear. It engulfed my entire world.

At first nobody panicked, we all thought it was something minor incidence like an eclipse but when the mews broke out about the 'Dark Star' that's when the world went straight to hell. At least thats what it looked like. Temperatures started dropping fast and everyone went pyromaniac. If you could burn it, it was already on fire and if it had the word 'fire' in its name or even alluded to the tongues of flames, people would try to light it even if it was completely retarded, or would it be better to say 'flame retardant'?

That all happened within the first couple of hours, in other words, half the world had gone up in flames whilst the other half hadn't yet risen from their slumber. The temperature continued to steadily drop but within the next few days it started to stagnate. Double irony - I believe that's what they called it. We were all so worried about global warming and how it would kill us all but, in some kind of twisted way, it's slowing our deaths. It's doing what we never wanted it to do until now - it's keeping the heat in.

Heat wasn't the only problem though. Without light a lot of us suffered and mostly from our own actions. The government couldn't keep control and soon enough lightbulbs became the new diamonds. People realised that burning everything killed more people than the cold and by the time half the population was wiped out, a leader or a bunch of leaders finally stepped up. The thing was, it was the blind leading the blind - literally.

Who would have thought that the most disabled would inevitably become the most abled? None of us did but it was our only hope. Our world may have changed but theirs hadn't. They always lived in the darkness and at a time where bribery was the way of live, they completely blocked it out. After all, what use did they have for light bulbs?

With the direct problems of heat and light out of the way, the focus turned towards sustainability. Global warming may have stabilised the dropping temperatures but it didn't stop it. Everyone's first instinct was to migrate to the hottest places on earth but as soon as igloos started propping up in places like the Sahara desert, people started to understand that some of the hottest places in the day can become the coldest at night.

It's then that we made the first breakthrough since the invention of human coats. If hot turned cold then... you got it. The Antarctic became the warmest place on earth.
