The next day they head out to where the humans are camped waiting for the leaders to return. By now most of the human guards are used to camping on the elven border and so they aren't all that jumpy about things. They just don't want Jessa to take very long. They do hope to watch more sparring though. It might be the last time since Jessa won't be a guard from now on. It was always a joy watching the human, Jessa, take down the mighty elven prince.
It is amusing to the humans to see no matter how much Dhiren improves it's never enough to beat Jessa.
It is the lure of the sparring matches just as much as the safety having Jessa with the caravans that makes her popular among the human guards.
When large amounts of elves start filtering through the forest and to the sparring grounds it doesn't take long for the humans to find vantage points themselves.
When Jessa makes her way to the center of the ring and makes her announcement, making sure that all those hear them, there is more than a little disbelief. "I will be holding try outs for my personal guard. I have opened the try outs to include the humans if you wish to try your luck. There are a few of you that might make the cut. Of course, once I return to Silva you would need to be willing to live there as well."
Her words that some might make the cut generates even more excitement. They never believed that Jessa believed them worth much when it comes to fighting. After all she grew up with the elven fighters.
Jasper was especially excited.
Jessa looks directly at him and smiles and he knows that she wants him to try out. He smiles back and nods.
The try outs are going good, but suddenly Jessa stops and looks around. She calls out to the deities that decided to watch the try outs. They have all at one time or another dropped in when the sparring has gone on.
"There is something wrong, I need help pushing back an enchantment." By now all the people are looking to her. "Up arms." No one can see an enemy but none doubt her.
The Ancient one sends out his magic and suddenly they see hundreds of invaders. "Jessa, I see three with auras," Jasper yells out, but Jessa is already pulling her bow back and letting loose an arrow.
She's not paying much attention to Jasper at this time, being too busy killing the invaders. She lets out as many arrows as she can before the human seeming people are too close. She then turns her bow into a staff and does her best to kill them until she is able to get enough space to pull out her sword.
Once she pulls it out she starts her dance of death. Soon enough Dhiren is at her side as she goes after the ones that seem to be directing the attack. Jessa smiles in delight as she goes against the two that seem to be oblivious to their danger. It doesn't take them long before they realize that they need to pay attention to Jessa and Dhiren.
Jessa fears that they are full dragons and so once she can she tells Dhiren to just keep any one else from interrupting her. The only ones that might be able to kill them are Alaric and the other deities. They are busy dealing with the many dragon kin that have swarmed them.
Jessa catches a gleeful look on her grandfather's face and just shakes her head as she turns her full attention to her current foes.
She delicately dances between the two deadly foes making sure to keep their attention and not letting them turn their attention to Dhiren or any of the other defenders.
Finally she is able to take one down. This seems to set the other one off a bit, it's enough for Jessa to take advantage of the distraction. Shortly she is able to end the fight. She takes a moment to look around and see how the fight is going and is pleased to find the invaders are all dead.
She also sees someone she shouldn't have. She presses her lips down in anger. Snodgras was watching from the forest. The same direction that the invaders came from. He's a traitor by bringing through the invaders.
Jessa knows fear, did the invaders harm those in Silva? Are the children safe?
"They are safe, Jessa, don't fear." Zira tells her trying to reassure her.
Jessa calms down as she goes over to check on Dhiren and the others. To find out just how many survived.
"Jasper, which ones did you see the auras on and what auras did you see?" Jessa demands as she comes to the human that had survived the blood bath several years earlier.
"I saw three, the one with a blue aura you took down with your first arrow. The other two you were fighting at the end, one had black and the other had red. The black one you put down first."
Jessa nods. "You survived fighting against the dragon kin, you made it to my guard if you are interested."
Jessa is pleased to see that Lady Silvermoon was being protected by Alaric and the Ancient one.
The adrenaline starts wearing down and Jessa grabs her arm as it starts to pain. The pain is intense and she unwillingly lets out a small scream of pain.
It doesn't take Dhiren long to get to her side. "What's wrong? Let me see it." Dhiren starts swearing sulfurously as he sees her wound. It isn't deep and wouldn't even need stitches, but, there are black lines going from the wound and following the blood vessels. Even as he watches the black lines move up her arm and towards her heart.
"Alaric!" Dhiren yells in a panic.
Alaric moves over to Jessa and him with alacrity.
"Ancient one, her blood has been poisoned by a full blooded dragon. She'll die if she doesn't get changed."
Dhiren's face turns white and he turns frightened eyes to the dragon king. Tears come to his eyes. They've had so little time together and now it might all end.
