Dhiren races out of Mistress Silvermoon's house. Kallen is outside waiting with the horses. He holds Jessa as they mount the horses.
They race to the end of the street and find it blocked. Then Mistress Frosnak comes to the fore. "Mel told me to come, that Jessa is ill. These are my men and they will make sure that we get to Alaric's house without trouble." Frosnak tells them as she looks at the over white princess in Dhiren's arms.
Frosnak manages to hide her worry at the sight before her and just has her men open the path to Alaric's place.
Alaric is waiting for them when they come. "Prince, I thought I made it clear that she needed to come as soon as possible?" Alaric is less than pleased at the state Jessa is in.
"She refused to come here until after dealing with Master Silvermoon's caravan goods. You will be happy to know that Mistress Silvermoon will be taking over the teaching of Jasper and housing him. You, Frosnak will need to go to her house or have Jasper go to a different location." Frosnak nods absently.
"I'll also make sure that no one robs her blind. She has been well taught and, although, is no dragon, she'll be able to do quite well for herself. I think marrying her to Master Silvermoon was a mistake on her father's part, but it wasn't any of my business. She'll do very well for herself once she gets established."
"Thank you, I had hoped you would be willing to help her like that." Dhiren says and gives her a mischievous smile.
"You already told her I would do that, didn't you, Prince?" Frosnak demands in exasperation.
"I did."
"If you weren't my best customer and Jessa's fiancée I would tell you where to take your account and shove it."
"Ah, but Frosnak, you know you love me." Dhiren teases but he never fully takes his attention off of Jessa. The banter continues as they go into the house and up the stairs.
"You may stay, Dhiren, because it will help to calm and ease her, but you will need to be quiet now." Alaric glares at the two as they enter Jessa's room.
Frosnak bows her head and retreats since she wasn't mentioned as being allowed. Dhiren takes himself to a corner where he can watch Alaric work on Jessa, but is out of the way.
Alaric works on her for some time before putting the bandage back on. "Stay with her, it will help with her healing. I'll send for some of the elvish food that is in the market. Kallen knows the cook and approves. I highly doubt any of your elves will appreciate the food I'll be making for myself and Jessa."
Dhiren nods as he climbs on the bed and lies down next to Jessa. He holds her gently not caring if Alaric has one of the elves bring him dinner or not. All he cares about is Jessa. He curses himself for staying as long as they did at Mistress Silvermoon's and wishes that he'd paid closer attention to how quiet Jessa had been and how white she'd gotten.
He doesn't even notice the passing of time as the shadows lengthen in the room.
Alaric comes bustling in with dinner. "Get out and work out those muscles. She won't be waking any time soon. I'll have to force feed her this and you won't like watching. Go get you something to eat, your people have already eaten and gone about their duties.
"I told Sorsha to come in here. She isn't to be on her feet longer than thirty minutes at a time. The rest of the time she's to sit, no less than ten minutes before standing once more. She'll need to move about instead of standing still as well."
"This because of her pregnancy?" Dhiren asks yawning. He'd not gotten a great deal of sleep the night before. He'd been too worried about Jessa to sleep much.
"Yeah, and since the survival of those babies is connected to my granddaughter's health she needs to follow my orders."
Dhiren holds his hands up, "I'm not going to tell her any different, Alaric. I know how much those children mean to Jessa. I would never intentionally put an expecting mother in danger of losing her children anyway.
"I only allowed Sorsha to come along at this time so that she can help Jessa stay put. Jessa won't fight with Sorsha because she would be afraid of hurting the children."
"Very nice, Prince. I'm sure that Jessa will be pleased to know that."
"I have no doubt that she has already figured it out. But it's Sorsha that would be hurt by that, so please, keep it to yourself." Dhiren tells the older man. Alaric nods his head, he wouldn't want to hurt the female elf either.
Dhiren stands up and stretches. He decides to take a walk through the bazaar as it finishes out the day. He doesn't understand why Jessa loves it so much, it's so smelly.
He takes a look at the articles in the stalls that remain. One of them, a fabric and garment store catches his eyes. It's a white spidersilk tunic. As he looks closer he realizes that it is embroidered with white floss. White on white, an exquisite job, but one not many would see. It is an undergarment sized for a child. Or a small adult, like Jessa.
The stall owner smelling a potential sell of an item that most won't even look at, makes his way over to Dhiren. "An excellent find sir. Spidersilk is a hard wearing and long lasting material. Well worth the cost."
"I am well aware of the worth of spidersilk. Tell me, merchant, the embroidery is flawless on this, but why did they use white on the white material?"
The merchant is unable to answer, "I honestly don't know, sir. It is masterfully done but because of the chosen color it will go unseen. Perhaps you would be interested in buying it?"
Dhiren laughs, "This is sized for a child, does it look like it would fit me?"
"No offense was intended, sir. Perhaps you have a child that would fit it or know of one that deserves such a gift."
"No, I would never buy such a gift for a child that would stain the spidersilk or outgrow it in no time."
"Please, sir, you must know of someone that is worthy of this tunic? The humans won't even look at it. Spidersilk is far to expensive for them and they don't trust it to be long lasting."
"More fools them then. What are you charging for this tunic?"
Dhiren then set to dickering with the merchant and managed to get the tunic for a steal.
By then almost all the stalls had closed and merchants gone on their way. Dhiren manages to find the elven food cook and buy himself some food. He goes to the nearly empty square that had earlier housed the bazaar. He finds one lone woman sitting on the ground with her cheap wares set on a colorful blanket before her.
"You are working late, mistress."
The female looks up with a smile that falls off into shock as she sees one of the prideful elves talking to her. "I sell items to the poorer people. They are just now getting off and sometimes are able to buy my items."
"Do you know of those that can use these items that can't afford them?" Dhiren demands gently.
The woman gives a derisive laugh, "I know many that could use any number of these items but can't afford any of them. The poor always have need of things they can't afford, sir."
"Very well, I will buy all your items and I want you to give them to those you know can use them. Then tomorrow morning I want you to go to Frosnak the money lender, the one of the gold dragon sigil, and tell her that I sent you. She will help you get new items to sell and help you set things up to do better. Is that a deal?" Dhiren is excited, she is just what he's been looking for to launch his program to help the poor of Castlerock. It's what he wants to show Jessa to prove that he no longer hates humans.
"You want me to go to Mistress Frosnak's? I would be laughed out of there if not beaten." The woman says horrified.
"You won't be, I will let her know to expect you. Have you eaten?" Dhiren asks the stupefied female before him.
The female packs up her items and still rather disoriented shakes her head no. As she finishes up she smells the delicious odor of the elven food from the only vendor still in the square. "I wasn't sure how much to buy. I hope this will be enough for you and your family." Dhiren says handing over the box with the food.
The human takes the food rather stiffly, looks at it then at Dhiren in shock, "It is more than enough. In fact it is far too much."
Dhiren refuses to take any of it back. "I'm sure that you know of someone that is in need of food. Please pay it forward and give some of it to them if you and your family have no need for it all."
The female wastes no time in grabbing her things and rushing home. As soon as she gets home she has some of the food and gives some to her children. Once they finish eating she sends her children out to give the merchandise to those in her neighborhood. She herself, goes to her next door neighbor and gives her some of the food.
She helps her neighbor eat until she is full for the first time in days. The neighbor lady thanks her with tears in her eyes. The woman smiles and tells her that she'll be back in the morning to help her with breakfast. The old woman smiles and closes her eyes.
The next morning the woman goes to feed her neighbor breakfast and finds her dead with a smile on her face. She wipes the tears from her eyes as she notifies the proper authorities before heading over to Mistress Frosnak's place of business. She doesn't even know the name of her benefactor and just hopes that he was telling her the truth.
She is more than a little shocked to find Mistress Frosnak waiting for her. She is even more shocked as she is escorted to the back room and told exactly how the elf was going to help her. She couldn't have been more shocked when she learned the elf's name.
Prince Dhiren is well known for his hatred of humans. That he is doing this and how kind he had been to her last night, it just doesn't mix. She doesn't understand, but she isn't stupid enough to miss this chance to get out of poverty.
Frosnak will be helping her buy her new merchandise. She will be giving her lessons on finance and opportunities. She will be giving the human a small loan to start out and only charging minimal interest on it. Frosnak assures her that with her help that the woman will be able to not only pay off the loan, but be able to move upwards in the bazaar and then in society as she betters her conditions.
As she leaves she notices the human that does the elvish food enter and talk to Frosnak. She wonders what the prince is doing for her.
But soon her mind is snapped out of her thoughts and she is handed the money Frosnak promised her and one of her people escorts her. As they wonder among the items to be chosen from Frosnak's worker helps her make her choices.
The rest of the day is spent on setting up her new items in her new location at the bazaar. Slowly but surely several of the items were bought. She has enough to buy more food to complement what she has left over from the day before.
For the first time in a long time she thinks that she can finally breathe and not worry about if they will have enough to eat.
