Chapter 3
Piper POV
"Not so fast," The bus driver said as Annabeth tried to pay, all us teenagers were standing around as the children took a seat. "You're ten bucks short."
"You see, we're in a... Situation and we need to take this place to Persephone's Pizza. Can we just sit down?" I asked.
"I would've grabbed my purse so I could pay, but it's at the house and I don't have any money." I said, sticking my tongue out as I took a seat.
"Not so fast. I need my money."
"Can't we just pay you later?" Annabeth begged as I snapped a quick photo. Annabeth glared at me. "Seriously? Now!?"
"Apollo said to be spontaneous." I said.
"Well, it would help if you weren't so laid back."
"It would help me if you laid back a little more."
"Well, it would be a help to all of us if-"
"You know what, just take a seat. I can't deal with moody teenagers right now."
"I can pay you even-"
"JUST SIT!" The bus driver yelled as Annabeth plopped down next to me.
"This is all your fault. I hope you realize that." She grumbled.
"How is this my fault exactly?"
"If you were watching Travis-"
"In all fairness, I didn't know Travis existed. He was really quiet."
Annabeth slumped back, pulling her owl hat further down on her head. "Whatever. Now my job just got ten times harder. How on Earth am I gonna watch eleven kids at once!?"
"I'm sorry, eleven? There are only five kids if you count Travis once you find him."
"The other six are you and your friends. No offense, but you guys are really childish."
"Why are you such a buzz kill anyway?"
"I'm not a buzz kill." Annabeth defended. Then, she sighed. "But if you must know, my mother died when I was little. My father's an alcoholic. I had to grow up real fast."
"My mom died when I was young too." I said, looking at Annabeth clenching her owl pendant. "Was that the last thing your mother gave you?"
Annabeth nodded. "Yeah. She gave me this in the hospital, right before she died. I never take it off."
I smiled. "At least your mother gave you something. Mine died in a car crash. After that, I had to move in with my perfect half sister and my father, Tristan McLean."
Annabeth's eyes widened. "Your dad's the Tristan McLean!? As in, the movie star!?"
"Yeah. He... Doesn't exactly know what to think of me. My sister, Drew Tanaka-"
"Ugh, I hate her. She always steals my books at school!"
"I know, right?" I almost laughed. "Anyway, Drew isn't exactly the nicest person in the world. She kinda treats me like trash in my own home."
"I guess we're both a little messed up, huh?"
"I guess so." I said as the bus driver turned around.
"You kids wanted Persephone's Pizza, right?"
"Yeah." Annabeth said, standing up. "We here?"
"Yeah.
Annabeth turned to the group. "Okay everyone, we're here! Jason, Calypso, Frank, you guys lead the way. Piper, Leo, Hazel, and I will be in back. Children, stay in the middle. Ready, break!"
Annabeth POV
As soon as we entered the pizzeria, I was greated by the smell of warm food.
"So... What now?" Jason asked.
"Piper and I are gonna go get Travis. Jason, you get the kids down at a table. Make sure they don't get into trouble. You can handle that, right?"
"Yes, I can handle that."
I grabbed Piper's wrist. "Let's go!"
"Stop dragging me!" Piper complained as I walked up to Travis's table.
"Travis!" I said, crossing my arms once I got to the table.
Travis looked up, confused. "Annabeth...?"
"Why did you sneak out of the house!?" I said, practically glaring at Travis.
"Yeah kid! You're giving me so much trouble!" Piper added in.
"And you are..."
"I'm your babysitter. Now come on!" Piper grabbed Travis by the shirt and dragged him out of his chair.
"Aye caramba." I sighed as I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around to see Percy, smirking slightly.
"Hey Annabeth." He waved.
"Percy... I... Um... Hi." I lightly waved.
"What are you..."
"Babysitting mix up. Do not ask."
Percy laughed. "It's always something with you, huh?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing. So about that-"
"Uh... Annabeth..." Leo said nervously, tapping my shoulder. Jason, Hazel, and Frank were behind him, looking ashamed.
"What Leo?"
"Another kid has gone missing."
I felt my eyes widen as I looked over at Jason. "Seriously Jason?"
"She was here, and we tried to stop her, but she's small and quick!" Jason defended.
"Yeah!" Hazel agreed. "We tried, and it's not all Jason's fault."
"You had one job." I said as I turned back to Percy. "I'm so sorry. I... Have to go find my charge."
"Need any help? I'm actually going to the concert with my little brother, so I know a thing or two about kids."
"I... I think... Katie oh my god where were you!?" I pushed past the group and hugged Katie, then looked at her arm. "DID YOU GET A TATTOO!?"
"Calm down. It's not permanent." Katie rolled up her sleeve. "It's henna."
Piper snapped a picture. "Nice."
"No! Not nice!" I screeched, then took a deep breath. "That's fine. We can fix this when we get home."
"Home?" Percy asked.
"It's a... Long story..." I said, laughing. A little boy with brown hair walked up to Percy.
"What's going on Percy?"
"Nothing. This is my friend Annabeth."
I felt something inside me crumble. So this is what it feels like to be in the friend zone...
"There they are!" Someone yelled. I looked back and saw Gaea pointing at us, including Percy and his little brother. Kronos ran in behind her.
"Let's get 'em!"
I grabbed Percy's hand and pointed to the door. "LET'S MOVE!"
We all ran out the door, scared out of our minds, as we unwillingly got two more people added to the mix.
I pushed everyone into a warehouse and stuffed the kids into a basket of clean clothes. Percy and the other teenagers hid around the corner.
"So what's going on exactly?" Percy whispered. "Why are two wackos chasing us?"
"Piper took a picture of a ferret."
"What?"
"You heard me."
"And my dad's car got towed." Jason added, leaning over to us. "So we somehow need to get $100 to get it back from the person who towed it by midnight."
Percy laughed a little, shaking his head. "Is this a normal babysitting job for you Annabeth?"
"You'd hope..."
"Well, I guess Tyson and I are stuck with you guys now, huh?" Percy asked, laughing. "Not that I mind."
I groaned. "Percy, I am so sorry."
"Annabeth, I really don't mind. Seriously." Percy laughed a little, poking his head around the corner. "Now the question is how we get around them..."
"Anyone got any ideas?" Calypso asked.
Piper looked at the building next to us. "I do. It's crazy, but it might work."
I slumped my head. "We're going to die, aren't we?"
"Oh please Annabeth. Save the melodrama for theater. This is gonna work. Everyone, in the factory!"
Needless to say, the plan didn't go as smoothly as Piper hoped.
