11. The Orca
It was a warm sunny day. Jeanette went to ride on her bike early in the morning. She wore her bike helmet and went off to the city to buy some stuff for her school project.
"Hi, Ms. Croner!" Jeanette greeted as she saw the old lady who was sheering her rose bushes.
"Focus on the road, young lady," she replied with a grouchy face yet Jeanette knew that the old lady was happy to be greeted.
"Mama Mia," she sang as she pedaled carefully with her skinny legs. The city might be a little far but she knew she had to finish her projects early, knowing that Simon already started his last night. "Yes, I've been brokenhearted. Blue since the day we parted," she added.
"Why? Why did I ever let you go?" Jeanette heard someone sing in reply. As she wandered her eyes around, she saw a tall teenage boy walking past her.
"Wow! Your voice is awesome," she spoke in her sweet voice as she stopped her bike for a while.
The boy halted as well, his cheeks turning red in embarrassment. "Oh, thank you."
"You're new in this neighborhood?" she asked.
"Yes," the stranger replied, chuckling. "I'm Mitchell and I'm 19 years old," he added.
"I'm-"
"Jeanette, right?" Mitchell asked. "I'm guessing that you might be 15 years old."
"Yes," she answered. "How do you know? And... I'm 17."
"I'm one of your biggest fans," he replied with a big smile.
"Wow! Thank you," Jeanette answered sheepishly. Realizing that she had something to do before her classmates buy most of her supplies.
"I have to go now," she spoke. "Bye!"
"Bye!" Mitchell replied, waving his hand goodbye.
Jeanette went back to her trip. On her way, she met some of her classmates.
"Good day, Cheesy!" she greeted.
"Good morning, Jeanette!" Cheesy replied. "Where's Alvin? Is he home? He told me that he'll let me borrow his video game today."
"He's probably sleeping until now since it's Saturday," she replied then continued to pedal.
After a few moments, she reached the store. She bought some stuff for her surprise Science project and went back home. However, while she was on her way, she saw Mitchell once more, this time looking worried.
She put her things to her bike's basket and pulled over. "A-Are you okay?"
"Jeanette, you're the best person I could ever ask for help. I... I saw an orca trapped on my neighbor's lagoon," he spoke. "I will be heading back to my parents' home tomorrow and I'm afraid I can't help it."
Peeking unto Mitchell's house, Jeanette found out that the house beside it was bigger than Bocarter's.
"Don't worry, Mitchell," she spoke bravely. "We'll try our best to help that orca."
"Really?" Mitchell asked, his mood lighting up.
"It will not be easy but we'll do what we can," Jeanette replied.
Mitchell invited her for a quick breakfast. There were pancakes and milk served at the table.
From the second floor of his grandparents' house, the two of them ate for a while while talking about some things related for the rescue.
"That was interesting," Jeanette grinned. Her eyes were focused towards her front but as she heard a strange sound, her gaze dropped towards Mitchell's grandparents' neighbor.
From there they saw the orca and was indeed on the lagoon.
"Oh, no! That poor orca's really trapped in the lagoon," she spoke worriedly. "I should really ask for some help to my friends. But..."
"But what?" asked Mitchell.
"... But I hope they will offer some help," she replied. She was about to tell him that she have lots of work to do for her school project but she saw that her new friend needs help and she already agreed."
She went back home and went to visit the boys. She didn't expect that her sisters were there.
"Oh, Jeanette! You're back!" Simon spoke.
"Why so sad?" Theodore asked.
"I saw an orca trapped in a lagoon," she replied, "It's family was on the other side. I want to help it but... I don't know how and... I have a school project to finish."
"Well, we can try to help you," Simon said, "Actually, WE WILL help you!"
"Really?" Jeanette asked with a hope beginning to light up from her heart.
"Wait!" Brittany interrupted, "Saving an orca?"
"Yes, Brit," Jeanette replied. "But I understand if you don't want to come with us."
"Come on, Brit," said the concerned Alvin. "She's your sister and she needs our help. Besides, we all haven't started our project yet, except my 'grade concerned brother' Simon," he added, making imaginary quotation marks on the air with both of his hands.
"Fine," she replied. "I'm only doing this to help my older sister."
"So here's the plan..." Eleanor spoke.
"Is it going to work?" Theodore asked.
"It will, Theodore," Alvin responded. "It will!"
Background music playing while they plan.
