Storage Unit #20
With the help of Nikki’s brother, Jason, I had no consequences for what happened in the warehouse with the gang members. To do that, I had to show them what I was capable of. Using my power to persuade Jason to act like a chicken made Nikki laugh uncontrollably, but Jason wasn't impressed. I explained that I didn't know I was capable of that, until that night.
They agreed to keep my secret and didn't judge me. As time moved on, I realized I was capable of so much more, but I still don't know where my powers come from. I asked Jason to help me investigate. He agreed to do so if I also helped him with a case he was working on. Once it was time to start our investigation, Jason informed me that there were some salvaged items from the house fire that killed my parents.
My father's brother, Adam, locked everything away in a storage shed. A key was waiting for me in a small box in his attic. He told me he had forgotten about it after all this time until I contacted him with questions about my parents.
He handed me the box with the key, before hugging me and sending me on my way. I followed the GPS to a cheap, rundown storage unit facility. I walked into the main office and asked the manager where to find storage unit number 13. He hesitated at first then pointed a long bony finger straight ahead.
"It's the second to last unit in that row,” he explained before returning to his newspaper.
Once I'm outside the office, I look back and see the man watching me, his eyes peeking over the top. When he noticed me looking at him, he hid his face behind the paper. I quickly walked down the second row, reading the numbers above the sheds.
10...11...12...13
This was it. I just hoped it held the answers I needed. Before unlocking and opening the shed, I took a deep breath. After the door was raised, I'm almost disappointed to see only a few things were salvaged. A few crates and a safe.
I close the door behind me, before opening the crate closest to the door. Inside I find albums of old photographs, my mother's typewriter, and my father's camera collection. I moved on to the next crate, but it was another dead end. Just a bunch of dusty holiday decorations.
Only four crates remained, and my hope was dwindling, but I opened the next one anyway. That's where I found my mother's wedding dress and my father's suit. Underneath those was a pile of old books, but only one stood out. I pulled out the purple book with a buckle on it. It was my mother's journal. She wrote in it often. It still smelled like her perfume.
Just as I opened it, an envelope fell out. It had my name on it, along with a bunch of drawings of the same symbol. I bent over to pick it up, just as a loud bang echoed throughout the unit. My heart pounded with fear, and I stayed low to the ground, waiting to hear the sound again. When it never came, I slowly lifted my head. I'm nearly blinded by a stream of light coming from a small hole in the back of the shed.
I turned around to see if there was a matching hole in the door. There wasn't a hole, but something was stuck to the door. I walk toward the door to examine it better. A bullet is wedged into the metal door. I pull one sleeve over my hand, peeling the bullet from the door without leaving a fingerprint. Someone was shot. There's blood in the creases.
I open the unit and walk around to the end of Unit 14. Peeking around the corner, I saw four men standing in front of Unit 20. Inside were opened crates containing many types of drugs and weapons. I found myself caught up in another situation involving illegal gang activity.
Before I could back away, someone pressed something against my back. I don't bother turning around, knowing I might be shot if I do. This is becoming a sticky situation. I just might have to use my powers. The man pushes me in the direction of the others. On the ground in front of them is the manager, who was shot and killed.
“He should've told you to come back another time,” the man behind me said. “Now you both have to die.”
He pushes me onto the ground next to the dead man and points the gun at me. I hold my hands up as if they'd protect me. Just as he squeezed the trigger, I squinted my eyes waiting for the pain that never came. When I open my eyes and moved my hands, I saw that everything and everyone was frozen in time. The bullet was only a few inches from my face. I quickly move out of the way, and stand up.
Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind. If I could freeze time, perhaps I could also rewind it. I closed my eyes and focused on how far back I needed to be. When I opened my eyes, I was standing in front of the manager again.
I quickly rush out of the office and call Jason. I wait outside the office for Jason to come. One by one the SWAT team pulls in, and the gang members are arrested. I read the letter while waiting for Jason to take my statement. There's one last thing I need to do before leaving this place. I returned to my unit and looked down at the safe. Carved on the top of it is the same symbol on the envelope. I enter the code into the safe and pull out another letter and a necklace. These were the keys to unlocking my true identity.
