Shopping
After struggling through a no pining no reveal one-shot I decided to be completely self-indulgent and write an Adrienette first date. Enjoy. -Colorado
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marinette nervously drummed on the desk in front of her. It was just her luck that her history teacher had decided to spring a pop quiz on them today of all days. Now that she was done, there was nothing she could do except wait.
'You can do this Marinette! Only,' She glanced at the clock above the whiteboard. '2937 seconds left, then you'll be out of here.'
She had already tried to distract herself by doodling and daydreaming, but neither were working. Her mind was too focused on what would be happening in less than an hour.
A date.
An honest to God date with none other than Adrien Agreste.
If she was being honest, she was still in disbelief. He had only asked her out yesterday after all. According to him, his schedule finally had an opening and he had decided to make the most of the opportunity. Her experience with movie dates had, unfortunately, been soured after her last failed relationship, so they decided to go shopping instead.
Now all she had to do was make it through this last class. Then she could run into the arms of the boy who she liked.
After what had to be the longest class period in her entire life, she was released.
"Alright, students, have a great weekend! You are free to go."
As if Marinette needed any more convincing, she booked it out of there.
In hindsight, that probably wasn't the best idea she had. Considering her track record for clumsiness, it was no wonder that she had tripped. Considering her track record with luck, it was also no wonder that a certain someone caught her.
"Whoa! You okay there, Marinette?"
Of course, out of all the people she would fall into the arms of, it just had to be Adrien. Well, she had wanted to run into his arms.
"Yeah, I-I'm fine." She said, smiling nervously. "Just you know me! Super clumsy."
"Why were you running, anyway?"
"Um, well," Marinette felt her face up. "I wanted to... see you?"
"Oh." She was pleased to note that Adrien's face turned pink. "Well, be more careful okay? We don't want your beautiful face getting hurt."
"Guh, um, yeah, I won't." She gulped.
"Are you ready to go?"
"I think so." She shot him a nervous smile. "I mean, I wouldn't have booked it out of there if I wasn't excited."
"Just because you're excited doesn't mean you're ready." He hummed, allowing her to get out of his embrace.
"Well, if I waited til I was ready I might be waiting the rest of my life." She muttered.
"Me too." Adrien's voice was as quiet as her's. It was reassuring, to know she wasn't the only one feeling nervous. "I mean, I still can't believe this is happening."
"Trust me, the feeling's mutual."
This was actually happening. She was actually going on a date with Adrien Agreste. The boy she had loved since the second day she met him. Not that he knew that....
As far as Adrien knew, she had fallen for him after their relationships with Luka and Kagami ended, allowing the both of them to grow closer in the process. While that is what caused her to realize she had never lost feelings for him, it wasn't the whole story.
Although, she was thankful for those months of friendship she and Adrien had. Without them, she'd probably still be putting him on an obsessive pedestal and tripping over her words. They wouldn't have been able to grow closer and Marinette definitely wouldn't have been able to go on a date with him.
Now, she had the treat of being romantically involved with the true Adrien Agreste. A major dork with a kind heart and clever mind, despite how sheltered he may be. God, she cared about this boy so much.
"My driver is waiting for us, so he'll take us to the markets."
"Okay, sounds great!"
They walked out side-by-side and it wasn't long before Marinette got lost in her thoughts.
'Should I be holding his hand? Would that be too soon? Would it be not soon enough? What if he hates it?' She started fidget as another thought came to mind. 'But if he loves it? What if he wants to hold my hand too, but is nervous about it?'
As if reading her thoughts, the back of Adrien's hand brushed hers. Quickly taking the opportunity, she grabbed onto it, entwining their hands together. He tensed for a quick second, before squeezing her hand. Just like that, her nerves decapitated.
Yes, this was Adrien Agreste, someone who she had cared so deeply about for so long, but this was also Adrien Agreste, her best friend. She didn't need to be nervous about this, even if it was new. Because if she was being honest with herself, they had been acting like a couple for far longer than they would admit.
"Here you are, mademoiselle." Adrien bowed, letting go of her hand to open the door for her.
"Why thank you, monsieur." She giggled.
"To the outdoor markets, please." Adrien said once they were situated.
The gorilla nodded, before starting the car and closing the divider between them. Marinette was grateful that he was allowing them some privacy. If it had been her parents, well... let's just say things would've been different.
"So, what stall do you want to visit first?" Adrien asked.
"I'm not sure, don't they change out every week?"
"Every market has a few weekly vendors, but yeah sometimes. Is there like a specific thing you're looking for, though?"
"Not really. I mean, some new fashion supplies would always be nice."
"Well, we are in one of the fashion capitals of the world, so I'm sure you can find something easily."
"Yeah, but all I really want from this," she reached over and grabbed his hand, pushing down her nerves, "is to make some memories with you, Adrien."
"Me, too." He whispered, picking her hand up and pressing a kiss to it.
"Well, what about you? What are you looking for?"
"Manga." He said automatically.
"Of course." Marinette laughed.
"You can sometimes find some real gems at these markets though!"
"I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled for them."
"Thank you! You're the best."
"No you." She winked, and relished in his flushed face.
"Um, thanks."
"You're welcome."
"I'll be sure to spoil you rotten with fashion supplies." Adrien winked, leaning over and bopping her nose.
"You don't have to do that, Adrien."
"I know, but I want to spoil you! What type of boy-," He stopped suddenly, his face a bright red as Marinette remained oblivious. "What type of person would I be if I didn't spoil you on our first date?"
At the mention of the nature of their outing, Marinette felt her nerves start to creep back in. She really thought she had gotten a hold of the butterflies since becoming friends with him. Turns out a date was all it took.
"Still, I don't want you spending all your money today. What about our future dates?" Marinette teased, not really registering what she was saying.
Adrien blinked, taken aback. After a few moments, a smile grew on his face.
"You're right. I have to make all of our dates special, so I'll contain myself. Only a little bit, though." He winked.
"Let me spoil you too!"
"I promise that getting to spend time with you like this is more than enough for me." He picked up her hand again and kissed it.
Marinette had a feeling that this would be a lot more common occurrence now that they were romantically involved.
"Ah, we're here!" Adrien cheered as the limo pulled to the stop. Once again, he made sure to open the door for her, offering his arm out to her. "I'll text you when we need to be picked up." He told the Gorilla. His driver nodded and drove off.
"Wow, this looks amazing!" Marinette gasped, taking in the sight of the market.
Booths and tents of all shapes and sizes were set up along the green. Using the provided walkways, people walked in and out of the vendors. Some were carrying bags, others food, some had children on their shoulders. Marinette took a deep breath in, allowing herself to be caught up with the hustle and bustle of it all.
"Are you ready to go?" Adrien asked, holding out his hand again.
"Of course!" Marinette happily grabbed Adrien's hand, allowing him to drag her into the market. "Where do you want to start?" She asked, looking around at all the items for sale.
"Wherever, it doesn't matter to me."
"Me neither. Why don't you lead the way to one of your usual stalls and then we can look around as you lead me there?" She suggested.
"Sounds great! Right this way, mademoiselle, I will be your guide for this afternoon." He said, placing a hand on his chest.
"My, my, it must be my lucky day to have such a handsome guide." Feeling a bit brave, Marinette leaned up and pecked his cheek.
"Guh," Adrien said, his face red.
"Lead the way my dorky guide." She winked.
Somehow, that brought him out of his stupor.
"Yes, of course! Come with me!"
Hands entwined, Adrien led her through the crowd.
"Hey, check out that stand!" Marinette pointed towards a stall filled to the brim with clocks.
"You wanna go check it out?"
"Why not?"
The two of them entered the booths area, and Marinette was immediately taken away by the handmade wall clocks.
"Oh my gosh! Look at this one!" She pointed excitedly to a clock featuring two bears playing in a forest while a clock on a tree told the time.
"I really like this one." Adrien pointed to an ice cream themed clock.
"That's so cool!"
"Oh, check this one out!" Adrien pulled her over to a Rapunzel themed clock, fit with the Prince at the bottom.
"This is such a cool pocket watch too." Marinette showed Adrien a gold pocket watch with rubies and amethysts.
"That looks expensive."
"Definitely."
"I was never super big on pocket watches if I'm being honest."
"Me neither. I think that I'd trip and accidentally break it."
"They just aren't exactly my style, you know?"
"Yeah, but Alix's pocket watch looks really cool."
'Not to mention it's a miraculous.' She kept to herself.
"Yeah, can you believe that watch is years old? Her ancestor really was ahead of her time."
"Hey, look, there's your anime stand, Adrien." She grabbed his hand and walked over to the stand filled with manga, figures, and posters.
"Whoa." Adrien's eyes sparkled as he took it all in, looking like a kid in a candy shop.
"What do you want to look at first?"
"Look! Marinette, they have Ouran High School Host Club posters!" He ran over to where the posters were, and Marinette could've sworn she heard him squeal.
"Who's your favorite host?"
"Isn't it obvious? Tamaki of course!"
"Of course he is." Marinette chuckled.
"What about you?"
"Haruhi. She's amazing and I think we could get along really well."
"You know, she and Tamaki do end up getting married." He winked.
"Wait, really? When? I don't remember that!"
"This is why you have to read the manga, Mari. Here," He nearly ran to where the manga was and started to grab book after book. "You have to read these! I'll even get them for you."
"Adrien, you don't have to do that." Although she couldn't deny that seeing him so adamant to spoil her didn't make her heart speed up.
"But I want to! Think of it this way, I pay for the books and then you pay me back by reading them."
"That doesn't seem like a very fair trade." Marinette giggled.
"Well, whatever. I said I was going to spoil you and now I am. You can't stop me." He stuck his tongue out playfully, and began his march to the counter.
Marinette shook her head, a smile on her face. She knew how stubborn Adrien could be, especially when it came to anime. There had to be something she could do to pay him back.
Her gaze turned towards the poster that had caught his eye. After checking the price tag, she made her decision.
"Here you are, Adrien." She handed him the poster after checking out.
Thank the Lord he had gotten distracted by The Promised Neverland merchandise or else he would've ruined her plans.
"What's this?"
"Well, I had to get you something to repay you!"
"But-."
"Just open it!"
His eyes widened as he unraveled the poster.
"No way. Marinette, you're the best!"
Much to her surprise, Adrien leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her check.
"Thank you."
"I-um, ah, w-wow."
"Sorry! I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable I just am so happy and grateful and you were looking so cute that I wanted to kiss you, but I really should've asked fir-" Whatever Adrien was going to say was cut off by Marinette leaning up and returning the gesture.
"It's okay, in fact, it's more than okay. I just was surprised, that's all."
"You know, I think I understand now." Adrien rasped, his hand coming up to touch the spot she kissed him.
"Come on you dork, let's head to the next stand." She grabbed his hand and they started to walk.
"You're going to have to text me all of your reactions to the manga, okay?"
"You know I will. Maybe we should have an OHSHC binge watching night one of these days."
"It's a date! If you want it to be, of course."
"Why wouldn't I?"
"You're going to make me melt, Mari."
"Good. Hey, look! There's a fabric store!"
"Do you want to go in?" Adrien asked.
"Obviously!"
"Lead the way, mademoiselle."
Marinette happily listened, tugging him along as her eyes glimmered. She ran around the tent going from one fabric to another. Adrien was happy to sit back and watch her. The smile that she wore, the joy in her voice, the way her eyes shimmered in the sun as she explained different fabrics to him, how could he not love her?
It was hard to believe that she had agreed to go out with him. He had been so sure he was setting himself up for rejection, yet here he was. He was on a date with the girl who he had liked since day one of knowing her, even if he hadn't realized it.
"And look at how good the quality is!" Marinette continued, showing him a pink and gold fabric.
"Do you want it?" Adrien asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I can get it for you."
"Adrien, you already got me something. I'll pay for this myself."
"You don't have to-."
"I saved up money just so I could splurge a little, you're not gonna let my efforts go to waste, right?" Marinette asked, fluttering her eyelashes innocently.
"Don't guilt trip me into not spoiling you. That's just unfair." Adrien pouted.
"I'm sorry, whatever can I do to make it up to you?" Marinette tapped her chin. "Oh, I know!" She leaned up and pecked his nose. "And there's more where that came from."
Using Adrien's fuzzled brain to an advantage, Marinette quickly paid for her fabric.
"That's playing dirty." Adrien shook his head once his thought process sorted itself out.
"You left me no choice, Agreste."
"I guess I'm just going to make it up to you by grabbing you something to eat, then."
"Sly, very sly." Marinette said.
"So, what are you hungry for?"
"I mean I don't need anything too filling. I'm not that hungry."
"I saw an ice cream stand the last time I was here."
"Ooo, ice cream sounds great!"
"Alright, let's head there then."
"What type of ice cream are you going to get?"
"Either mint or coffee."
"Coffee ice cream?"
"Yeah, I may have been up a bit too late last night, thinking up scenarios about today would go." Adrien explained sheepishly.
"Oh thank the Lord I wasn't the only one." Marinette breathed a sigh of relief.
"Of course you weren't. Do you have any idea how long I've been wanting to do this?"
"I bet I've been wanting to do it longer."
Adrien raised an eyebrow. She had liked Luka since she met him, and was crushing on Chat Noir probably before that. Whatever her feelings were for him, they were probably developed after her and Luka broke up. Since he fell for her before that, then he had this in the bag.
"Alright, bet. When did you first um..." He trailed off, not knowing how to phrase the question.
"Get a crush on you?"
How was it that those simple words still made his heart pound in his chest? They were on a date for Heaven's sake! Yet the thought of her liking him made him feel giddy from his head to his toes.
"Y-yeah."
"You might want to sit down for this."
"I'll take my chances. How groundbreaking could-?"
"I fell for you when you gave me your umbrella."
Adrien stumbled over his own feet. Well, he certainly hadn't been expecting that!
"I told you to sit down." Marinette shook her head, looking as if she hadn't completely turned his world around.
"Marinette, that was the day we met!"
"I know, I was there."
"S-so you've had feelings for me since day one?" Was his face on fire? It felt like his face was on fire. His face was definitely on fire! There was no other explanation for the sudden heat.
"Yep."
"Why didn't you tell me?" He croaked.
"I tried, Adrien. I really did. I sent letters, but forgot to sign them. Or they would get mixed up. Or I would just chicken out at the last minute."
"Oh." He whispered, his mind running through every memory he had of her.
'She liked you and you didn't see it. How could you have not seen it? You even-.'
"I asked you to help me out with Kagami!"
"Yeah."
"But you liked me?"
"Yep."
"So, why'd you help me?" He asked, flabbergasted.
"Because you're my friend. I just wanted to see you happy and if that wasn't with me, then, okay. I would deal with that when the time came."
"You're amazing, Marinette. I hope you know that."
"Thanks, Adrien. So what about you? When did your feelings develop?"
"Well, I guess I lost our bet." He muttered. "But it was New York when I realized they were there. As far as how long they've been there, probably since the gaming competition. That was the first time I really got to know you and I've been falling ever since."
Marinette didn't say anything for a few moments and Adrien worried that he had overstepped. Then, she did something unexpected.
She kissed him.
'Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh'
"Thank you. That's really sweet." She giggled.
"Y-you just! You just kissed me!"
"Is that okay?" She asked, suddenly looking unsure.
"O-of course it's okay! Just...really unexpected." He brought a hand up to his face, trying to hide the goofy smile.
"Well, you were being so sweet!"
"Marinette." He whined.
"What?"
"You know what this means, I'm going to have to kiss you unexpectedly now as payback." He grinned as Marinette's face turned red.
"I guess so, huh?"
"So just um, watch out! Or maybe don't, since that would ruin it being a surprise."
"Whenever it happens, I'll be looking forward to it."
"Oh?"
"I mean, didn't I say I've been crushing on you since forever?"
"Yes, you did. A fact that will be running around in my head until the early dawn."
"I'm sorry that I never told you."
"It's alright, I know how nerve-wracking it can be. Especially when you think you're going to get rejected, but hey, we're here now! That's what matters, right?"
"Yeah, you're right."
"So... ice cream?"
"Ice cream." Marinette agreed.
Finally recovered from the impromptu kiss, Adrien grinned as his date and led her off to where the ice cream was.
And if he surprised her with a kiss as he dropped her off, well that was a story for another time.

Ironic that I spent way too much time writing this. I blame the news we've gotten recently about the series and the fact that a Lukanette trailer came out the day I started writing this. Poor timing a little bit, but now it's done. Vote and comment if you've enjoyed! -Colorado
