It had been a long day and Adrien was exhausted. It seemed like his students had been even more rowdy today than usual. He couldn't blame them if that was the case, however, everyone was simmering in anticipation for tonight's celebration. Today was an important day for any Parisian.
Especially for him and his wife.
"Hey! You're home early." Marinette grinned, walking over to him and giving him a peck on the lips.
"Yeah, the school let everyone go because of tonight."
"Are you still feeling up to going? I wouldn't mind a quiet night in."
"Yeah, I know how much the kids have been looking forward to tonight, plus I'm sure Paris is expecting to see their favorite heroes." Adrien winked.
"Okay, just let me know if you change your mind."
"I will. And speaking of them, where are the kids?"
"Emma's up in her room getting ready and Hugo and Louis are outside."
"She's already getting ready? The party doesn't start until 18:00."
"Shaun and Setsuko are picking her up a bit early. They want to go to dinner."
"And I'm assuming we'll meet up with her at the celebration?" Adrien said as they stepped outside where Hugo and Louis were battling with foam swords.
"Yeah. We have tickets to that Jagged Stone concert, remember?"
"And will Shaun and Setsuko join us?"
"I think everyone has tickets." Marinette smiled before raising her voice. "Hey boys, look who's home!" She called.
"Daddy!" The twins cheered in tandem, dropping the foam swords and rushing towards him.
"You're home!" Hugo said, hugging him.
"Hey buddy, how was school?"
The eight year old grinned up at his father, his green eyes sparkling.
"We learned all about the planets today!"
"And we learned about multiplication." Louis boasted.
"Well, it sounds like the two of you both had very productive days."
"What does productive mean?" Hugo asked as Adrien lifted him up on his shoulders.
"It means you got a lot done." Marinette informed him, leaning down and wiping a bit of dirt off of Louis' cheek.
"Now, since your father is home and we have a few hours to spare, what would everyone like to do this afternoon? Remember, your sister is leaving soon and we want to be at the celebration by 18:00 sharp. Hugo and Louis, you two should both get into a bath before we leave, I don't think you want to meet Jagged Stone with dirt on your faces." Marinette chuckled as the four of them walked inside.
"I bet I can take a faster bath than you, Hu!" Louis hopped down from his mother's shoulders and took off into the hallway.
"No you can't! Maman, can you time him?" Hugo asked as they heard the bath start to run.
"Sure thing, Hu. In the meantime, you should finish up the rest of your homework. We won't be able to get it done for the rest of the night."
Hugo sighed in defeat and trudged to his bedroom.
"Okay." He pouted.
"And if you can get it all done, maybe we'll just have to get you something extra special at the concert." Adrien's proposition made Hugo perk right up.
"Okay papa!" He smiled his famous toothy grin and took off down the hall.
"Phew. I'm going to go and get changed, okay?"
"Okay."
When Adrien returned, he saw that Emma had joined Marinette.
"Hey Dad!" She said, looking up from her computer.
"Hey, sweetheart, how was your day?"
"Pretty good. We had a test in history that I think I did pretty well on and there's a new group project in English, but I got paired with Shaun and Eliza, so it shouldn't be so bad." She shrugged.
"And when are Shaun and Setsuko getting here?"
"I don't know, Shaun said that Aunt Alya wanted to help him with homework before he came over and Setsuko had her guitar lesson. But it's anytime between four and five."
"Okay and we'll meet up with you at the concert?"
"If that's okay?"
"Of course sweetie, just keep your phone on you so we can contact you."
"Thanks papa!"
"We both want you to enjoy these celebrations. This is the first time you're going to one as a teenager." Marinette stepped in.
"And the first one where you truly understand what this day is to our family." Adrien said. "We want you to have a good time and not focus on the fact that..."
"My grandfather is the reason why we have to celebrate in the first place?"
"Yeah, that."
"Don't worry, papa. I'm sure tonight will be a blast."
"Just keep us updated, okay honey?" Marinette said.
"I will!" She promised. "How was your day, papa?"
Even though she was nearly fifteen, Adrien still couldn't believe that he was a father. The day that Emma had been brought into this world had been one of the best days of his life. Although he was nervous that he would only reinstate habits Gabriel gave him, Marinette was there with him every step of the way to make sure it didn't happen.
"It was good, but my students were a bit more rowdy than usual. They were all excited over tonight's celebration."
"Makes sense. Everyone was chattering about tonight."
"Nobody said anything about you, did they?" Marinette inquired somewhat innocently.
"If they did I didn't hear it. No offense, but Hawkmoth was more of a your generation thing. Besides, I don't think my father is the same Adrien as Adrien Agreste."
"I'm glad nobody said anything to you. I had to suffer through a lot of awful looks at school once the news got out, so if it ever does happen, just know you can always talk to me about it, okay?"
"Thanks dad, I'll keep that in mind."
"What are you looking forward to most?" Marinette asked, changing the topic to something lighter.
"Well, of course meeting Jagged Stone is going to be amazing, but I'm really looking forward to the food. I remember last time, there was this delicious fast food station in the park." Emma sighed. "But must be a stand meant only for the festival because I was never able to track it down after."
"I'm sure we can find it again at the concert."
"I just hope grandpa won't kill me for liking fried pastries." Emma chuckled.
"We won't snitch if you won't." Marinette winked.
'Ding dong!'
"Oh, that's probably Shaun and Setsuko." Emma said, standing up. "Bye Maman, bye papa." She gave them both kisses on their cheeks and headed to the door where she greeted her friends.
Her and Shaun had grown up together, which was a given since his parents were Alya and Nino. Setsuko was Luka and Kagami's daughter and ever since the four of them had reconnected, their daughters had become close friends.
"Bye sweetie! Have a great time!"
"Thanks Maman, thanks papa!"
"Thanks for letting us steal her away Aunt Marinette and Uncle Adrien!" Shaun called.
"Of course Shaun. We'll see you later." Marinette waved to the boy.
"Tell your parents we said hi, Setsuko, if we don't see them tonight."
"Will do!" The girl gave them a salute before the three of them heading out buzzing about this and that.
"You know, they remind me of someone." Adrien chuckled.
"Oh really? I wonder who you're talking about." Marinette drawled.
"We were about her age when everything started, huh?"
"Yep. You turned fourteen a few weeks after we got our miraculous."
"I still can't believe you were crushing on me way back then." He snickered.
"Hey! You were in love with me too." He fake pouted.
"Maman! Maman! How long was that?" Louis suddenly raced back down the hall.
"It was," Marinette checked her watch. "Ten minutes!"
"It's my turn now! Time me, Maman!" Hugo smiled.
"Okay, ready, set, go!"
"Imma beat you Lou!" Hugo laughed, rushing into the bathroom.
"Hey maman?"
"Yeah Lou?"
"Can I watch a show?"
"Adrien? What do you think?"
"Did you get all your homework done?" Adrien asked.
"Yep!"
"Okay, go ahead then."
"Thank you, papa!" Louis turned the T.V. on to some random cartoon.
"You're welcome."
"I'm glad that the two of them are at least having no complaints about getting ready." Marinette sighed. "Small blessings."
"Small blessings indeed."
"Adrien, I know I asked already, but are you sure that you're doing alright?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I know how much you want to stay strong for the kids, and I also know how much this day means to you in the past...." Marinette wrung her hands together. "I just want to make sure that my prince is doing okay,"
Adrien let the smile slip if only for a moment. His eyes flickered to where his eight year old son remained oblivious to the world. For Hugo and Louis, this would just be a day filled with parties and celebrations. For Emma, this was the day her grandfather went to jail a few years before she was born. But for Adrien?
This had to be the worst day of his life.
"Come on kitty." Marinette said quietly. "Let's get somewhere private so we can talk, okay?"
He nodded.
"Alright," Marinette said as they sat down side by side on their bed. "Do you want to tell me how you're feeling?"
Adrien sighed, and pulled her closer.
"I guess, it's just hard. I know I should be used to this by now. It's been years for Heaven's sake! And most days, I am, I really am. I don't give Hawkmoth or Mayura or any of that any thought. But I guess that with today being the 20th anniversary it's hitting harder."
"Oh Adrien. It's okay." She pulled him closer, so he was practically buried in her shoulder.
"I just," He took a deep breath in. "I can't help but wonder if it was my fault. If maybe I had been a better son maybe my mother wouldn't have felt pressured to use the peacock miraculous and then she wouldn't have gotten sick and my father wouldn't have been Hawkmoth and-."
"Hey, hey, look at me." Marinette turned his chin up. "This. Was. Not. Your. Fault. You are not to blame for your mother doing something risky and you're certainly not to blame for Gabriel not being able to cope."
"I know that, Marinette. The rational side of me," He gulped back a sob. "I-it knows. B-but I can't help but t-think on days like this i-if I had done s-something more," He cut himself off there, afraid if he spoke any more that he would start crying.
"Hey, it's okay. You can cry, my love. It's not healthy to keep your emotions in."
The dam broke, and suddenly Adirne was sobbing into his wife's shoulder as she stroked his hair.
"It's okay, kitty. I promise you. It's going to be okay."
"W-why aren't I-I over it?" He sobbed.
"Because it was a really harsh time for you. It's okay. You're going to be alright."
"D-do you think t-that it's s-stupid to not be over it?"
"Adrien, no. Of course not my love. Healing from something like that takes time and you've made so much progress."
"Really?" He whispered.
"Yeah." She leaned down to kitten kiss his nose. "I mean, you're an amazing father and an amazing husband. Like you said, most days you are over it. You're allowed to have a few days of remorse. Okay?"
"Okay." Adrien whispered, wiping his eyes. "Thank you, m'lady, I feel a lot better now."
"Anytime." She murmured as he leaned in to kiss her.
"So, what's the plan for when we get to the celebration?" Adrien asked, standing up to wipe his nose and eyes.
"Well, I was thinking we could do a bit of shopping with the boys, then have a linner before going to Jagged's concert, then after we meet up with Emma have dessert. By that time it should be time to take the kids to my parents and then we can return as Ladybug and Chat Noir for the late night festivities. Sounds good?"
"Sounds purrfect." He grinned.
"Ugh, you know you're absolutely infuriating sometimes right?" Marinette teased.
"Yeah, but you fell in love with me twice over, so I don't think you mind it that much." He said with his classic cheeky grin.
"Unfortunately, you are correct. But I wouldn't change it for anything."
"Neither would I, bugaboo."
"I just hope no new supervillian decides to take over the party." Marinette groaned. "We still haven't met the Hawkmoth of Bunnix's time yet, and I'm a bit nervous about when it's going to start. I mean we have children now, Adrien! And jobs! It was hard enough sneaking off during school, how am I supposed to explain disappearing at work?" She fell back on the bed.
"Well, it's a good thing you don't have to worry about that." Adrien leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her brow. "Because as far as I know, the butterfly miraculous is still safely in the miracle box."
"Yeah, you're right."
"Maman! I'm done with my bath!" Hugo called. "How many minutes was it? Was it shorter than ten?"
Marinette glanced down at her watch.
"It looks like you managed to be faster than Louis by a few seconds." She reported.
"Yay! Hear that Lou? I won!"
"Boo!" Their other son said, and Adrien and Marinette bursted into giggles.
"Come on, you should start getting ready, princess. I'll take care of our two rascals."
"Thanks Adrien, you're the best. Have I told you that recently?" Marinette asked.
"You may have mentioned it once or twice, but I don't mind hearing it again."
Marinette hummed, placed a peck on his lips, and then disappeared into their en suite to take a shower.
Adrien, already feeling a lot better, heading over to his son's room.
"Hey Hugo, do you need any help?" He asked, knocking on the door.
"No thanks, Papa! I'm okay!" Hugo stepped out looking every bit like his mother's child.
"Well, you certainly inherited Marinette's fashion sense."
"Is that a good thing?" Hugo questioned.
"It's a very good thing young man. It means that you are the best dressed out of anyone in the family."
"Even Emma?" Hugo brightened.
"Even her. But keep it in between us, okay? Man to man."
"Okay Papa! Let's pinky promise. You can never break a pinky promise." Hugo proudly reported.
"Alright." Grinning, Adrien interlocked his pinky with his son's.
"I promise I won't tell anyone."
"And neither will I." Adrien ruffled his hair.
"Are you excited for tonight, Papa?" Louis asked as they joined him.
"Oh, I'm very excited for tonight. You two are going to have a blast at Jagged's concert. Has your maman mentioned that she's designered multiple covers and clothing designs for him?"
"Really?" Both boys asked, their eyes widening.
"Yep! And that's not all, but the second part of the story comes when you're a bit older."
"Aw, why can't we hear it now?" Louis pouted.
"Yeah! We're old enough!"
Adrien chuckled.
"Well in that case, I'm going to have to ask an old friend for permission before I tell you anything further. But let's just say that Marinette being his old designer isn't our only connection to the man."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Louis asked Hugo.
"I don't know." He responded.
"You'll learn someday." Adrien promised them. They would learn a lot of things someday.
And speaking of learning things, Adrien supposed it was time to propose to Marinette about telling Emma the truth behind the black and red flying creatures she sometimes dreamed about. In fact, she used to swear that they really existed, but Marinette had managed to change her mind about it. However, that could wait for another time.
All Adrien wanted to do right now was enjoy the night with his family.
A real one.
Not one that had locked doors and chained secrets. Not one that did more harm than good. Not a family that had only made Adrien feel more and more isolated as he grew up. Not a family that put such little trust in each other they looked at each other with more suspicion than love.
Especially when Gabriel Agreste had started to become his and Ladybug's #1 suspect to be Hawkmoth.
No, what he had was real and wonderful. It was a family that trusted each other. A family that welcomed each other with open arms. A family where everyone could share secrets and laughter over the dinner table. A family filled with so much joy, Adrien wasn't sure how much more his heart could take most days.
His kids were absolutely wonderful, his marriage was an incredibly happy one, and whenever he came back to the house it never felt like a burden. Instead it felt right.
It felt like home.
Something that teenage Adrien had always dreamed of having. A place where he was comfortable and safe. A place where he could crack a joke or geek out about an anime without worrying if anyone was judging him. A place where he could be passionate, silly, even rebellious, without having to overthink about the consequences.
That was exactly the type of place he had right now.
A place warm and comforting. A place that was a stark contrast from his upbringing.
Even if the road had been long and hard, Adrien was so glad he was here. He was doing something he actually enjoyed and was able to come home to a loving family. Filled with affection and love instead of hostility.
Gabriel had never been there for him. The Agreste Mansion felt like a hotel most of the time. He never felt quite at peace there, especially as he got older. Growing up as Adrien Agreste had never given him the opportunity to experience what home felt like.
But now, laughing with his sons as his wife came out of their room, it was exactly the thing he had always wanted.
Finally, after years and years, Adrien was at home.
