Chapter 10
Dan didn't particularly understand why he was standing in Starbucks, a steaming coffee in his hands as the clock ticked closer and closer to one. He was subconsciously lifting his foot up and down to a random beat, the nerves making him quite uneasy. His heart was beating so fast that he wasn't entirely sure how the whole shop couldn't hear it. Dan took a long sip of his coffee before glancing down at his watch. It was almost one so Phil should be arriving any second. Dan heard the door open and the small ring of the bell, looked up expectedly and, sure enough, Phil Lester was standing in front of him. His usual smirk wasn't in sight and instead there was a sad, sympathetic smile. "I'm sorry." He whispered before reaching out to take Dan's hand. Dan couldn't help but flinch his hand back in response, earning a sad look on Phil's behalf. "Let me explain." Dan took one last sip of his coffee before throwing it in the bin beside him.
"Go on then." He muttered, folding his arms.
"Well.."
-
"You did what?" Chris practically screamed, staring at PJ in complete awe.
"I gave Phil Dan's locker combination." PJ mumbled, scratching the back of his neck slightly.
"Why would you do that? You know how much he hurt Dan! He might try and hurt him even more."
"I know.. it's just.. he has got a good heart."
"How would you know that?"
"He told me something I swore not to tell anyone."
"You're going to tell me, right?"
"Just swear you won't tell Dan."
"I swear." PJ then glanced down at Chris' hands to make sure his fingers weren't crossed.
"Phil likes Dan." Chris couldn't help but gasp.
-
"I like you. I have done since the day I laid eyes on you," Phil started, looking down at the ground and refusing to look up at Dan in case Dan was angry. "I told you before. You were different and I was mesmerised by you, I still am. I have never felt so drawn to someone before and it was scary. I was petrified because I had never liked a boy before and I always thought I was straight but then you came along and sent me flying off the tracks. The reason I told you I didn't like you was because I didn't want to feel something for a boy, I was afraid. I thought it would go away as soon as I let you go.. but it didn't.. if anything, it only got worse." Phil finally dared to look up and he let his tear-filled eyes meet Dan's. "I'm so sorry but I like you, I really do." Phil really hated himself for doing it but he then let out a loud sob. "I'm sorry." Dan didn't say anything before leaning in and wrapping his arms around Phil.
"Can we go back to being friends?" Dan asked, not daring to let go of Phil.
"Yes, of course we can, Dan."
-
"Is he planning on telling him that he likes him?" Chris asked after the shock had finally settled in.
"I'm not sure." PJ truthfully responded, shrugging his shoulders.
"Is it bad that I hope that he does?"
"I kind of do too. I may have hated Phil but now that I've talked to him I think that his bad-boy persona is just an act." PJ smiled at Chris who immediately smiled back as if to say that he agreed.
-
"So.. do you want to get a coffee or something?" Phil asked once his sobs had subsided and he was just sniffing.
"I've just had one but sure." Dan responded, reaching into his pocket to pull out his wallet. Phil stopped him just before he could pull it out by taking out his own.
"It's the least I can do for you." Dan didn't argue.
-
After they had ordered and collected their coffees, they sat down by the door. "Thank you. You know.. I'm sorry too." Dan mumbled before setting his drink down on the table.
"Why would you be sorry?" Phil questioned, not exactly understanding why Dan was apologising when he had done absolutely nothing wrong.
"I probably shouldn't have shouted at you in front of your friends.. They probably think you're a loser like me now."
"I don't care about them anymore. I don't think I am going to hang out with them anymore."
"Do you want to hang out with me, PJ and Chris then?"
"Only if you want me to.. I'd hate to intrude.. Plus, I'm not sure if they like me much."
"I'll speak to them if you want?"
"Tell them that I wouldn't hurt a fly." Phil chuckled and Dan did too as he realised he was quoting one of their first meetings.
"Unless it was a really annoying one." Dan finished for him, making them both laugh even harder. It was as if everything was back to normal. "Are you free tomorrow?" Dan blurted out without really thinking about it.
"Probably, why?"
"Do you want to come round mine for dinner? My mum wants to meet you."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I told her about you a while ago and she wants to meet you."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"I don't know if she'll like me," Phil chuckled. "PJ and Chris don't so why would she?"
"I'm sure she'll love you as much as I do."
"You love me?" Dan's eyes widened as he realised what he had just said and how it could have been interrupted. "Don't look so scared, I love you too."
"You do?"
"I do."
