More to the Point, Why Do You Let Bad Things Happen To Me?

Andrew took me to the hospital and told me not to go to sleep. But I was really super tired, and I was finally OK. Right?

When we got there, one of the nurses said I needed something called an MRI?

I didn't know what it was, but Andrew didn't like it.

"Is there any other way? Delia's too young for that."

The nurse said it was the only way, and he told me to follow him. But I didn't move.

"Andrew, what's an MRI? Why do I need it?"

Andrew knelt down and sighed. "Sorry, Dee. You need a body scan to see if there's anything wrong in your inside. I can't be there for you, the doctors won't let me."

I started crying. I thought I was safe.

"But I don't wanna go! I can't if you're not with me!"

Andrew gave me a hug. "I know, Dee. I'm here. It's gonna be OK."

I sniffled. "B-But do I still have to go? I d-d on't want you to leave m-me."

Andrew ruffled my hair. "Of course not, Dee. I'll be there in any way I can. OK?"

I nodded and took a breath. "I'm scared, Andrew. Really scared."

Andrew hugged me tightly. "I know, Dee, but you are so much stronger than you think you are, I promise."

I sniffled again. "Daddy... I'll miss you."

Andrew ruffled my hair, like he always does. "I'll be right there, Delia. Just close your eyes and I'll be there, okay?"

I nodded, and I left with the doctors.

Andrew's POV;

Delia left, just like that, and I was smiling, because she was doing it.

Then my mind replayed the conversation we had and I grinned.

Delia thinks of me as her dad.

A doctor walked over to me. "Andrew Rannells? You were with Delia Watson?"

I nodded. She smiled.

"You can come into the MRI scan, you just have to wear this."

She handed me a thick black coat and I stared at it.

"Why?"

The doctor checked her clipboard. "The scan is intended for Delia, so any other persons in the room would affect the performance of the scan, but if you wear this, you'll be able to console her if she gets too scared."

I nodded. I'd be able to see her.

With the doctor's help, I pulled the jacket over my clothes and felt extreme discomfort.

But I had to do this for Dee. She needs me.

The doctor lead me to the MRI scan and I had to get checked in before getting allowed in.

I saw Delia, her eyes shut tight, and her hands clenched in fists.

I smiled. She was doing it.

But then her eyes opened and landed in me. I smiled, but she must not have seen it, because she started screaming.

"It's a monster! A black monster that's gonna take me away!"

Her crying interrupted the scan, and I knew I had to calm her down.

"Hey, Dee, it's Andrew. It's me."

"Now it's pretending to be Andrew to take me away," Delia sobbed. I wanted to take off this stupid coat, but I'd ruin the operation if I did.

"Hey, Dee, calm down. I'm here, don't worry. I'm wearing this so you have me here, OK?"

I saw her frighten blue eyes, her scared expression. I held out a hand.

"Would a monster hold your hand for you?"

Delia hesitated, then took my hand and squeezed it tightly.

"Andy," she said quietly, and started crying happy tears, "You didn't leave me."

I ruffled her hair, her favorite affection method. "I won't ever leave you, Delia, I promise."

She nodded and tried to smile. "I'm still scared, Daddy. What do I do?"

I thought about it. "Just close your eyes and pretend you're not in the hospital. That you're with me and we're out getting ice cream! What's your favorite ice cream flavor?"

Delia scrunched up here nose and thought about it. "Caramel!"

"Alright, then! When you finish your MRI, we'll get you caramel ice cream, but first just lay down. It's gonna be OK, Dee."

She nodded again and laid down. She let my hand go as they took the scan, and I smiled as she followed what needed to be done.

After the scan, I had to leave for a while for the doctors to get Delia out. Once she was discharged, she ran over to me and hugged me.

"Andrew! I did it! I really did it!"

I kissed her cheek and picked her up. "You did it, Dee! Now it's ice cream time!"

"Yay!"

She hugged me tightly and I laughed. The doctors said her results would come in a few days, so I took her out for ice cream like I promised and she was as happy as ever.

When she got home, she hugged me tightly and smiled. "Thanks, Daddy."

"For what," I asked with a smile.

"For... everything!"
