Chapter 3
"You excited for your first day at this new school, Edison?" Ben asked as we drove off to a public elementary school.
"Not really..." I said, looking down at the Superstore shirt I was given because Ben said I couldn't be living in a shirt and tie for the rest of my life.
"We're here, Edison. America's gonna pick you up at 3:30. Here's some lunch money. Have a good day and make some friends!" Ben said as I got out of his car.
I walked around the schoolyard and heard a girl laughing while singing Freeze Your Brain from Heathers. I headed towards her and smiled. She was actually kind of cute. She had black hair, but part of it was purple and half of it was pulled up into space buns. Her friend next to her was a heterochromatic girl with chocolate brown hair dyed green at the tips.
"Hi." I said, and Purple Hair turned around. "Was I right that I heard you two sing Heathers?"
"Yes!" Purple Hair said. "You're the new girl, right? Edison Fraser?" I nodded and she squealed. "I'm Art. Art Fischer. That's Vance Lopez over there." I waved to both of the girls as a whistle blew in my ear.
"Alright! Class, everyone come inside. The day's about to begin!" I smiled and walked into a classroom with Art and Vance, full of a bunch of kids in T-shirts and jeans.
"Class, we have a new student! Edison Fraser, why don't you come up to the front of the room and introduce yourself?" the teacher said. I got out of my seat, stood up at the front of the room, and cleared my throat.
"Hi! Uh, my name is Edison Fraser, and I moved here about six months ago from Dublin, Ireland!" I said cheerfully, then saw kids look at me weirdly. And then I realized where I went wrong. If I lived in America for the past six months, then where would've I gone to school?"
To clear the confusion I said, "I was homeschooled for most of that time." The children nodded and then I was ushered back to my seat.
The day flew by rather quickly, with a bunch of classes and boring lessons on the American Revolution, photosynthesis, dividing fractions, and figurative language. Recess went rather smoothly, I played kickball with a group of kids and my team won by a landslide. Lunch was fun, I was laughing and talking with a group of kids who did theater for the school and they asked me if I wanted to be on stage crew this year.
All in all, it was a pretty good day.
School was just about over and I was getting my backpack out of my locker and my teachers were trying to catch me up on what work I had missed since the beginning of the school year. I texted America and told her I'd be a little late because my French teacher wanted to see me after school so I could catch up.
After twenty minutes of catch ups and stuff, I got into America's car and she waved at me.
"Hey, Edison! How was school? Did anyone give you any homework?" America asked.
"Great, school was fine. I got paired with a group of random girls on a science project, they seem pretty nice so it's fine. The gym teacher asked me if I was interested in doing track this year and I said sure."
"Ooh, track! That sounds fun!" America said. She looked at my leg and said, "Where did that bruise come from?"
I looked down at my leg where a fresh bruise was forming. "Oh. I don't know."
"Oh. Okay. Now, tell me more about your day."
AN: I slipped a bit of foreshadowing in this chapter, and only aster-alpine knows what it is and what it's foreshadowing, and I'm not telling anyone else. Hope you enjoyed and catch ya later! Love ya all!
