Part 5
Crystal walked downstairs and went to find Orl- her father. She had started calling him dad, even when the adoption wasn't official.
She saw Kathleen at the bar counter, nibbling on some toast and Crystal suddenly realized how hungry she was. She went and sat beside Kathleen, who handed her a lightly buttered piece of toast.
She bit into it and swallowed, but as soon as she did, she felt like she was going to be sick. She set her toast down and blinked tears away.
Kathleen looked at her sister sympathetically and rubbed her back.
"I'm sorry sis, I know it hurts. Dad went out to get you some medicine for the pain." Kathleen said.
Crystal nodded and ran to the bathroom. She leaned over toilet and threw up what little food she had in her.
Kathleen picked her up and lay her on the couch, laying a cool rag on her head.
"Kathleen, why does it hurt so much?" Crystal asked, tears pricking her eyes.
Kathleen lay a fluffy blanket on her sister and rubbed her shoulder.
"I'm sorry Crystal, it'll be better soon I promise." Kathleen said, readjusting the cloth on Crystal's forehead.
The door opened and Orlando walked in carrying a brown paper bag. He opened the bag and took out a small bottle of pills. He poured a glass of water and took out one of pills. He walked over and handed Crystal the pill and the water.
"Take your medicine and then you can rest." Orlando said.
Crystal nodded and popped the tablet into her mouth and got it down with some water. She handed the water back to Orlando and closed her eyes.
"Try to rest Crystal, I'll be in my office if you need me." Orlando said, kissing her forehead.
Crystal closed her eyes and nuzzled deeper into the blanket.
When Crystal woke up, she noticed that the t.v. was on and Kathleen was sitting at the end of the couch with worried look on her face.
Keeping the blanket over her shoulders, she sat up beside her sister. Her heart stopped when she heard the t.v. There was a picture of her father and a female news anchor was talking.
"Ryan Collier has escaped from prison. Citizens are warned to lock there doors. This man has been convicted of child abuse." The anchor said.
Crystal felt her heart stop. Wasn't her father in prison? She began to cry. Kathleen wrapped her arms around Crystal and rubbed her back.
"It's alright, we won't let him get to you." Kathleen said.
At that moment, Orlando ran downstairs and locked their doors. He looked over to see Crystal crying in Kathleen's arms. He sat down beside them and rubbed Crystal's scalp.
"I take it you heard?" Orlando asked. Kathleen nodded.
"If her father even looks at her I swear he's dead." Kathleen muttered, holding her adoptive sister close.
Orlando lay a hand on his daughters shoulder.
"He won't hurt her I promise." Orlando said gently.
They had no idea what was coming.
