Chapter Twelve

Katelyn's point of view

I sat alone in my science class, glancing at the door with a small hope of Jacob walking through with his tight as hell pants and sleeveless button up shirt.

However, he never walked in. The never even opened.

I sighed and looked down at my work sheet, circling and scribbling down answers. I didn't care if I failed it, I was worried about Jacob.

I closed my eyes once I finished and then laid my head on my hand. My hair fell to the side and my bangs covered parts of my face. I bit my bottom lip a bit and then snapped my eyes open as the bell rang.

I gathered my stuff and then headed straight towards my locker. I quickly unlocked it and put everything away. I grabbed my book for my next class and then I sighed as I unbuttoned the cardigan. I wrapped it around my waist since it was itchy and then I made my way to my next class.

On my way, I lost count of the number of people who told me to put my sweater back on and that I was breaking the dress code. Each and every time I just rolled my eyes and nodded, but not making any move to fix the 'mistake'.

Jesus, they act like it's a crime to not have your sweater or something on.

I sat down in my next class and looked at the teacher. "You're cardigan Katelyn, please put it on or its not uniform."

"It's itchy."

"It's uniform."

"I don't care. It is itchy as hell and I'd rather be comfortable and breaking the rules than to have to sit with this thing on and listen to you blab on about a subject I'm not really interested in." I said out of pure irritation and she gasped. "So please, just ignore it. I don't want a rash."

"Katelyn I will not be spoken to like that. It seems Jacob's attitude has rubbed off on you." She said and I grit my teeth. Why does everyone have to bring him up? "Go to the principal's office at once. I will not have you in my class if you'll be disrespectful."

"I didn't want to be in your class in the first place." I said to my algebra teacher and then stood up quickly. I threw my bag over my shoulder and left the class, slamming the door slightly behind me.

I made my way to the principal's office and then sat down on a chair, throwing my bag on the floor. "Katelyn, what happened?"

"Thought the teacher would have given you a rang while I made my way over here." I said and then the phone rang. She held her finger up and then picked the phone up.

I huffed and then crossed my arms. The teacher gave me a hard look and I rolled my eyes as I looked to the side. "Yes, of course. She's in my office. Continue teaching."

She hung the phone up and looked at me. "I expected more from you." She said and I noticed that she had the same last name as Jacob.

"Don't expect things from someone, rule number one in life." I said and she glared at me slightly. "Are you related to Jacob?" I asked and her strict and confident
demeanor crashed.

"He uh no, I am not." She said but she was lying. Her face was flushed and her eyes were looking anywhere but me. Plus, they have the same eyes and the same facial structure with sharp cheekbones and a slightly pointed chin.

"Okay." I said, pretending to believe in her lie. "Where is he?"

"He ran aw-I don't know." She said but quickly corrected herself. I gulped and then I leaned back. "This is about you Katelyn, not my so-oh god."

"You're a liar."

"No I'm not. I just prefer to keep things a secret and hidden." She told me and crossed her arms.

"You're ashamed of him."

"He has blue hair and a lip ring and he will not follow the rules." She countered and then waved her hand around as she shook her head. "Nevermind him, what we need to talk about is the uniform and respect policies in this school."

"It's pointless." I told her and shrugged. "Skip it. I don't want to listen to you blab on about rules that I will end up breaking because they're not for me. Health over school."

"Your health is not affected when regarding school uniform." She said and I took the cardigan off.

"This irritates my skin. I will not wear it today." I said because I had a short sleeved button up on. "I refuse to."

"It's tolerable."

"You're being inconsiderate."

"I will call your parents young lady." She said and I rose my eyebrow at her. "Do not talk back to me."

"Then it's not a conversation, more like you yelling at me." I told her and she grabbed the phone. "Like I care." I scoffed.

"Yes hello, Mr. Hemmings, Mr. Clifford, may you came by for a quick parent/principal/student confrence or is timing bad? Yes. Great! I'll see you soon." She said and I huffed.

Good god save me now.

"Back talking? Out of uniform? What's gotten into you?" Michael asked me as we left the school. Apparently the principal refuses to have me at school if I will continue being a disruption and having this attitude.

"I know you don't have many friends here besides for Jacob, but you need to stop this at once. He's a bad influence and you're not going to be around him. Stop acting up just because you can't see him." Luke told me and I gasped.

"You think I'm doing this because of him?" I asked in disbelief. "Why is everything about him? Why does everyone associate what I do with him?" I asked and they looked at me confused. "Oh, his attitude rubbed off on you. Oh, you're acting like Jacob. Oh, he would do this. Oh, he wouldn't do this." I mocked.

"Well you're the one who talked to him and hung out with him." Michael said sarcastically and I scoffed. "Now, get in the car. We're having a long chat about your behavior lately and what we're going to do about it."

"Great. Feels like some movie." I said as I opened the car door harder than necessary. I slammed it shut and Luke glared at me.

"Don't take your frustrations out on my baby." He said and got in. "You'll break my car."

"Cares more about a car than someone else's feelings, nice Luke." I said and he rolled his eyes as he started the car. I buckled up and then closed my eyes.

It was silent in the car. They didn't make an effort to turn the radio on or to even start up a conversation. I didn't even hear the kisses they'd try so hard to make me hear, just so I could laugh at it or mimic them.

I sighed and hummed along to the song Jacob loved so much. It was stuck in my head and I didn't like how I could always hear it in my mind. "It's like an avalanche, I feel myself go under."

"Quiet."

"Cause the weight of its like hands around my neck," I sang louder, just to irritate Michael. He turned around and glared at me.

"Where did you even hear that song?"

"It's one of Jacob's favorites. You want to know another one of his favorite songs?" I asked and he shook his head. "Well I'm gonna tell you because I know that you know that song."

"I don't want to kn-"

"It's She's Kinda Hot." I said and he looked at me. "That song is his second favorite and he looked up to you guys actually, especially Ashton. You all went through a tough life before making it big he said, that gave him hope."

"I... I don't care." He said and turned around, causing me to roll my eyes. He's such an asshole.

"Did he say why?" Luke asked me, his voice soft and barely audible over the air conditioner.

"Because he's an outcast and that song, plus many others, help him feel like he's okay. Like he'll be fine and that it's okay to be different." I said and sighed.

"He idolizes Ashton?"

"Yeah, and Alex Gaskarth, and the madden brothers, and Oliver Sykes." I said, not knowing who half of those people are. "Oh, but you don't care so forget I said anything. He's invisible." I told them and then unbuckled my seat belt since we were at rhe house.

I got out of the car and then closed the door, going up to the front door. I waited for Luke to open the door, and once he did, I walked in and then went up to my room.

I threw my bag on the floor and then the two walked in. "I don't suppose you're going to yell at me for being irritated by this khaki sweater are you? Because if you are, I don't want to hear it." I told them as I sat down on my desk chair, turning my back towards them.

"Katelyn," Michael said but I didn't turn around. "Look at us love." He said and set a hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off and he sighed. "Kayelyn, turn around."

"No."

"Just turn around darling, we're not going to yell at you and we're not going to hurt you, I promise." Luke said and I was quiet, which was strange for me. I'm usually really talkative.

"No violence?"

"Cross my heart, hope to die, poke a needle through my eye." Luke said and someone set a hand on my forearm that was resting on the arm rest. They spun my chair around and I looked at them.

"Look," Michael said as he crouched down. "We're new to this parenting thing okay? We're practically teenagers still, so we don't know what the hell we're doing. All we know is that you're our little girl now and we have to keep you safe."

"We may have gone overboard but we were worried okay? You didn't come home that night and we thought something bad happened to you. You're a beautiful young lady and lord know what disgusting people are out there okay? You udnsrstand where I'm coming from?" Michael asked.

"Now that you're not yelling and screaming at me, somewhat." I said and Luke sighed, asking me to drop the attitude. "I don't understand why I can't just hang out with Jacob. He's two years older but it's not like we're doing the stuff. We talk about our favorite songs and what we want to do when we grow up, and he stands up for me as if I was like his younger sibling."

"We don't know him and we don't trust him because we don't know him." Luke told me and tilted my chin up. "Our first impression wasn't too good so we didn't know what to think. We were panicking and afraid and nothing was processing besides for he was with you and you were gone."

"I'm sorry." I said. "I was scared. You hit Ashton and then Calum was yelling at Michael and then Ashton hit you back and I couldn't take it." I mumbled.

"We're sorry Katelyn, we never meant to scare you and to hurt you." Michael said this time and gave me a soft smile. "So, you and him didn't do anything?"

"He sang a song and we talked a bit before falling asleep. We didn't do anything dirty if that'd what you're asking. Even if we wanted to, we were in public." I told him.

"He has a girlfriend though, right?"

"Oh um, uh no he doesn't. He's single, he just said that because you guys wouldn't comprehend the words we're not together and we didn't do anything." I told him.

"Come here." Michael said and opened his arms. I gave him a hug and Luke joined in. I guess it was like a 'family' hug kind of thing.

"If you say he's a good guy, and you want us to trust him and get to know him, maybe he can come over for dinner sometime." Luke said and I smiled. "Michael can apologize and so can I. Maybe Ashton and Calum could come over too."

"Sounds great Luke, thanks." I said and he rubbed my back. "That'd be amazing." I told him as he kissed my head.

"I'm not apologizing to him."

"If you don't, no sex for a whole entire month." Luke said and I scrunched my nose up in disgust as Michael froze.

"Who does what?" I asked out of nowhere. "Who like... I don't know the terms for it, but who's the one who like, takes it?" I asked them and Michael laughed.

"Confidential."
