Chapter Twenty

(Can I just say that I seriously love how you guys don't give a fuck that the main character is bisexual. You guys were just like 'I kNEW IT' and 'I ship it omg' and that's pretty fucking awesome. I love you guys so much.)

Sophia's point of view

As I was cooking breakfast, I had found Calum's cigarette pack. I didn't throw them away, despite how much I wanted to. I just ripped a piece of paper up and wrote that he didn't need them in order to stay happy and stress free.

I put them back and then grabbed what I was looking for originally, some coffee grounds and tea bags. I set them on the counter and sighed.

I wiped the sweat off of my forehead and then placed two plates on the table. I looked for something that was missing and then I ran to the kitchen.

I grabbed the kettle and took it off of the stove as it began whistling. I poured the water into four mugs and then began to make them. Three would be tea and one would be coffee.

Ashton likes hot coffee while the rest of them only drink hot tea.

I grabbed two cups and places them besides the correct plate. When I grabbed the two cups, I almost spilt them as I saw Ashton standing in awe.

"I um made you guys breakfast." I mumbled quietly and then placed the final two cups down. "I'm sorry if I woke you, I didn't mean to Ashton." I said and then went up to my room.

I flinched a bit as he grabbed my arm and he looked at me confused. "Aren't you going to eat? There's five of us but only four plates." He told me, not bringing up the fact I flinched when he grabbed me.

"I ate while I was cooking." I told him, hoping he'd buy my lie. He looked at me, and then reached up to touch my face. I flinched again as his fingers ran over my cheek and then he looked at his thumb.

"Why do you have make-up on? I thought-"

"It smells good." I heard someone say but I kept my eyes on the floor. "Woah, what did I walk in on."

"Nothing." Ashton said and pulled away. "Go eat Calum, I need to talk to Sophia." He said and I shook my head.

"You-You need to eat too. Your coffee will get cold if you don't." I told him and he gave me a look.

"You cooked?" Calum asked me and I nodded. "You don't need to cook for us. We are fully capable of cooking ourselves." He told me and I just shrugged.

"Go wake the others up to eat, I'll be down in a bit." Ashton told me and I followed him up to his room. He closed the door and I looked at him afriad.

"Sophia, what's up?" He asked me. "You cooked dinner last night, breakfast this morning, you won't talk, and you're wearing foundation." He told me as he wiped his thumb across my cheek.

"It's nothing."

"Wait," he said and I nodded. He left and then I heard running water. He came back with a towel, a corner of it dampened, and then he began wiping away the make-up.

If I told him to stop he'd get suspicious and mad. If I let him wipe it away, he'd still get suspicious and mad.

Either way, I lose.

I winced as he pressed down to hard and he tilted my head. "Oh my god," he breathed out and I closed my eyes. I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest at this point.

"Who did this?" He asked me as he continued wiping away the make-up. "Is there something going on we don't know about Sophia?" He asked me.

Ask Michael, he'd know damn well what happened.

"No," I said, not lying. "I'm fine."

"Your bruised cheek says otherwise Sophia." He told me as he dropped the towel. "You can trust us, you can trust me." He told me and I gulped.

I couldn't tell on Michael. I just couldn't.

"I-I dropped my IPad on my face while using it. You know how when you drop your phone on your face?" I lied and he nodded. "Yeah, I um dropped it a few times on my face."

He was silent, looking at me as if to say 'do you really expect me to believe that?'. He sighed and then looked down at tthe floor before looking at me.

"Don't tell me then. I won't push for answers if you're not comfortable talking about it." He told me. "Just... don't lie to us please?" He asked me and I sighed.

"Okay." I said and he smiled.

"Come on, come downstairs with me." He told me and I agreed hesitantly. I followed him out and then as soon as Michael saw me, I turned around because fuck I don't have make-up on.

"Sophia?"

"Can I use the restroom?" I asked Ashton and he nodded, telling me that I didn't need to ask. I ran upstairs and I heard the sound of a fork dropping on a plate.

I went up to my bathroom and then closed my door. I ripped my drawer open and then I took my foundation out. I quickly began to put it on my bruise until you couldn't tell I had it on and then I flushed the toilet to play along to my lie.

I turned the faucet on and then put the foundation away. I washed my hands and dried them on a towel after I turned it off. "Sophia, open up, I know you're not really using the bathroom."

I didn't want to anger him, but I didn't want to see him. "Please, I'm not going to hurt you... again." He said and I shook my head even though he couldn't see me.

"Michael, she's just using the-"

"She's not, I know she's not." Michael told who I believe was Calum. "Sophia, please, open this door. I promise I won't hurt you. I promise."

I heard that before. I've heard it too many times before. They always say that. That's what everyone says

I'm not going to hurt you.

I promise.

It always ends up happening again. I always end up yelled at and then hit. Promises are always broken. Everyone breaks the promises made towards me.

"Sophia, open this door." Michael was demanding now, his fists banging on my door rather than knocking.

I covered my ears and pulled my knees up to my chest. I couldn't bring myself to open the door. He was reminding me of my old gaurdians, both of them.

"Open this god damn door!"

"Get your ass out of there and clean the house!"

"Hurry the fuck up!"

"Get the fuck out of there are cook some dinner!"

I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head. I thought they were gone. I thought I didn't have to deal with them again. I thought I got away from them when they were put in jail. I thought the voices would stop.

The banging got louder and my breathing came out in gasps as flashbacks played in my head. I tugged on my hair and shook my head, trying to rid the thoughts.

"Sophia! Darling, open this door please. We're begging you!"

I closed my eyes and then the door literally fell. I opened my eyes and I saw him again. "Get-Get aw-way from me!" I yelled and tried moving from him. "Don't to-touch me-e!"

"She doesn't have asthma so what the hell is happening?" Someone asked and I closed my eyes. "Oh my god, someone call an ambulance or something."

"No, keep your eyes open. Sweetheart, keep your eyes open. Um, uh, what do I do? What do I do? Guys, what the fuck do I do? Oh my god help me." Someone panicked and then it all went black.

-

Calum's point of view

I ran a hand through my hair, ripping strands out as I tugged on it a little too harshly. "Fuck fuck fuck," I chanted as Michael kept trying to get her to wake up. Luke was calling the ambulance and Ashton was chewing on his nails.

I looked and then Michael picked her unconscious body up. He carried her to the bed and I looked at him, feeling a flare of anger rise in me. "What the hell did you do?" I accused and he looked at me.

"What do you mean, what did I do?" He asked me as Ashton eyed him. "I didn't do anything."

"She shouted at you to get away from her and not to touch her. She looked deathly afraid." I said and looked at him. "What. Did. You. Do."

"I-I didn't do anything, I swear-"

The next thing I know, Ashton had Michael pinned against the wall. He had a fist full of the neckline of Michael's shirt and you could feel the anger radiating off of him.

"You hit her."

"I-I didn't-"

"She has this fat ass bruise on her cheek and she told you to stay away from her and not to touch her." Ashton growled, tightening his fist.

"She doesn't." I said and looked at her. Ashton told me is under the make-up on her right cheek and I went up to her. I licked my thumb and then began wiping her cheek.

As I wiped it away, I saw a purple-ish mark on her cheek. I wiped some more away and surely, it was a bruise behind all of that make-up.

"Why would you even lay a finger on her like that?" Ashton asked angrily. I clenched my fist and looked at Michael. I must have looked pretty scary because Michael flinched when he looked at me.

"When this is all over, I am going to kick your ass and I swear to god, I swear to fucking god, you better make it up to her. You better apologize and you better fucking fix things or you aren't going anywhere near her." I said lowly. "I can't believe I actually fell for you, you're such a dick."

"Guys, an ambulance is on the way and only one person can ride in the car with them." Luke said as he walked into the room. "What's going on?"

"I need said fucking cigarette." I breathed out as I went to my room. I yanked every drawer out of my dressers and looked everywhere but I couldn't find them. I groaned and thought about where I put them.

The cabinet.

I ran downstairs and ripped the cabinets open. I grabbed my pack and my lighter and then slammed it shut. When I opened the half empty pack, I saw a piece of paper crumbled up inside of it.

I took it out and then read it. "You don't need these Cal, despite how much you think you do. Please stop. You're just destroying yourself. xx Sophia."

I looked at the pack and then the image of Sophia with with a cigarette between her lips came to mind. I told her not to smoke and not to even think about it but here I am, just about ready to smoke the last of these.

Hypocrite much?

I squeezed my eyes shut and then sighed. She needs someone to look up to and to be proud of. How can she be proud of a smoker? How can she look up to a chain-smoker?

I opened my eyes and threw the pack on the counter with the lighter. I can't. I have to stop. I have to stop for her.

"Ashton! Get off of him! We don't need two people going to the hospital rooms!" I heard Luke shout and then I ran upstairs as the door slammed open.

"Break it up!" I yelled and Michael held his eye. "The paramedics are here and I want you all out of this room." I shouted at them and Luke looked at me. I grabbed her phone in case I need to call anyone if it's really bad and then stuffed it in my pocket.

"That was fast."

"I didn't do it." I said, shocking him. They all shuffled out of the room and then paramedics barged into the room. I followed them down after and a guy looked at me. "I'm family." I said simply and he looked between us two. "That's my adopted daughter."

"Get in, quickly." He said and I got in. "Mind explaining how this happened sir?" He asked as he got in too. I grabbed her hand and looked at him.

"Um her other dad was banging on the door to get her out because I think something was wrong. Then, all of a sudden there was gasping coming from the other side. We broke the door down and then she screamed at him to get away from her. Then she just closed her eyes and we don't know what happened and we're scared because this has never happened to her while she was with us." I said.

"You're gay?"

"My adopted daughter is unconscious and you're more concerned about my sexuality?" I asked him angered and shocked. He apologized and then nodded.

Soon, we got to the hospital and then I jumped out of the car. "Sorry sir, you can't go in yet. We will tell you when you can go in." He told me as they wheeled Sophia to a room.

I didn't scream at them to let me in. I didn't break down and beg for them to let me in. I didn't have it in me. I was itching to have a cigarette and I was still furious that Michael laid a hand on her in order to harm her.

I sat down on the chair and then ran a hand through my hair as I rested my elbows on my knees. I needed to know she was okay and I needed to know what's wrong with her. I need answers and I need her to be okay.

Her phone vibrated and I pulled it out. It was a text from that Kevin guy asking about the ambulances that went towards her house. I looked at the pin and then entered Makenna's birthday. It didn't work.

I entered her birthday, but it still didn't work. I entered a bunch of other birthdays and none of them worked. Finally, I put mine in and it brought me to the home screen.

Aww.

I sent him back and text that she was in the hospital and than this was Calum. I sent him the name of the hospital and he told me he'd be here soon.

I turned her phone off and then put it on my pocket again. My knee bounced up and down in anticipation and I closed my eyes.

I really needed her to be okay. It may not seem like it, but he had a really big impact on us. She helped me try to stop smoking and I swear, I've been happier than ever since she came. For awhile, she helped Michael stop drinking and Ashton had also been extremely happy lately. As for Luke, he hasn't had a fling ever since she came here as that's great.

"Calum!"

I looked up and suddenly a small blonde had her arms around me. "Oh my god, is Sophia okay? Is she awake? What happened?" Makenna shot questions at me and I shook my head.

"She's not awake and the story is just too long." I said and she nodded. "But she'll be okay, she has to be. She's a strong girl, she can pull through."

"I hope so." She said and took a seat beside me. The guys soon sat down in the chairs aswell and not to long after, Kevin ran over.

"What happened to her? And why did you text me off of her phone?" He asked and looked at me. "You look like a wreck."

"I feel like a wreck." I told him and he chuckled. "She had this attack, I'm not sure what it was though. And I took her phone because if something really bad happened, I could call you guys." I said and he nodded.

"Smart boy." He said and sat beside Makenna. "I hope she's okay. If she can take almost being eaten by a slide, she should be able to wake up." He said and I chuckled.

I can see why she's friends with him.

"Um... Calum Hood and Michael Clifford?" A guy asked and I literally bounced out of my seat. I went to him and he looked and us. "You're her parents? You're both kids."

"I just want to know how my baby is doctor." I said and he nodded. "Is she okay? Will she be okay?"

"It seems she had an anxiety attack that had been triggered from something that may have been a replay of something apart of a very truamatic past. Her records recall of a very... abusive and stressful past." He told us. "From what you've told us, someone was banging on doors and yelling at her to get out?"

"Correct."

"Maybe that, along with something else that had previously occurred, triggered her into the remembrance of her past because, like I previously stated, we have records of her coming in before with broken bones and much more but under a different surname." He said and I nodded.

"Will she be okay?"

"We are not sure." My eyes widened and I looked at him. "After awhile of so many attacks and so many experiences, her heart has had a lot of stress on it. I'm not sure if it can make it through this one."

I looked at Michael and then balled my fists up. Tears filled my eyes and I hit his chest like a child. "This is your fault. My baby is going to die and it's your fault Michael." I cried and he just wrapped his arms around me.

"Mr. Hood, we are not sure. It is a possibility, a really high possibility, but maybe she can pull through." The doctor said and I just cried.

I didn't care.

"Can we see her?" Michael asked an the doctor said we could indeed. I pulled away and then he lead us two to a room.

When we got in, it physically hurt me to see her in that bed with wires connected to her. I rushed over to her side and grabbed her hand. "Oh my god," I said.

"Please be okay Sophia. Please. We need you. Me and Makenna need you. I need you. You need to make it through this princess. You're You're a strong girl and-and I need you to make it through this." I rambled and looked at her body.

Please god, please let her be okay. She's too young to be taken away. Please. She had so much ahead of her. She has so much potential. Please.

"Calum-"

"No, you-you can't talk to me." I told Michael, my words almost choked. "You-You did this. You just had to go and bang on her door and slap her." I said, tears in my eyes.

"That's not nice." I looked up and saw Kevin in the doorway. "Don't blame people." He said and walked in. "Maybe he did, or maybe she just couldn't control something and she snapped."

"I need her to be okay." I practically whimpered. I made a cross and then pushed my hands together. "Please god, please let her be okay. I'm sorry for my sins, I really, really am but please, she-she needs to be okay. Please. Please let her be okay." I choked out and then a horrible sound filled my ears a few seconds after.

Her heart moniter went flat lined.
