Chapter Thirty
Sophia's point of view
After awhile, I kind of gave up on looking for Gabe and started actually looking for pretty seashells. I found a few, a pretty light purple one and a coral colored one.
I bent down to pick something up and then washed it off in the ocean. I lifted it and saw that it was a sand dollar. I smiled and held it as I continued looking.
"What are you doing here all alone?" Someone asked and I jumped. "Oops, did I scare you?"
"Yeah," I breathed out and turned to look at the brunette boy. "What are you doing here all alone?" I asked him and he chuckled.
"I was actually looking for you so we could properly talk and get to know each other." He said and I smiled. "What were you doing?"
"Picking up seashells." I said and he nodded as we began to walk along the shore. "Anways um, what do you want to know?"
"Anything you're willing to share."
"I don't know where to start, I'm pretty boring." I said as I played with my sand dollar. "I don't know." I said as I laughed.
"What do you like to do?" He asked me. "Besides picking up seashells and hanging out with your brothers."
"Brothers?"
"Those two weren't your brothers?" He asked and I was quiet. "Who are they?" He asked me.
"Um... yeah, one of them is," I lied and he nodded. "But um, I like basketball and listening to music." I said with a shrug. "Uh, hanging out with my friends, playing guitar, and hanging out with my
brother."
"See? You're not as boring as you think if you can list what you like to do." He said and I nodded, asking him about his hobbies. "I like basketball too, and video games are a must in my life. I also enjoy music and American football."
"Only American football?"
"Yes." He said and I nodded with a chuckle. "I feel like I've seen you before." He said and I looked at him confused.
"Where?"
"In my dreams." He said and gave me a charming smile. I laughed and he gave a chuckle.
"Stop being cheesy, I'm lactose intolerant." I said and he laughed. He asked if I really was and I shook my head.
"I wasn't being cheesy, I was trying to be smooth to get you to like me more." He said and I rolled my eyes. "Did it work?" He asked and I shook my head.
"No, cheesy pickup lines don't work on me." I said and he nodded. "Only because I'm the one who gets to say them, not the other way around."
"Well miss Sophia, do your best. Impress me." He said and stopped. He turned to me and I laughed.
"No."
"Come on." He said and I shook my head. "Are you scared they won't be as good mine?" He teased and I rolled my eyes.
"Mine are the stupid ones. They don't pick people up. They make them laugh and walk away." I said and he looked at me. "Just one," I said and he nodded.
"I seem to have lost my number," I said, sounding bummed out. "Can I have yours?" I asked hopeful and he chuckled.
"Yes you can." He said and I laughed. "That wasn't that bad. Mine was better, but it wasn't bad."
"You're an idiot." I said and we turned around to walk back. "Why am I talking to you?" I asked him.
"Because I'm cute and cool."
"And cocky." I said and looked at him. "Cute, cool, and cocky, you know what that equals?" I asked him and he shook his head. "The type of boys you stay away from."
"And why is that?" He asked me and I just hunmed. "Maybe I'm only acting confident so you'd like me more." He told me.
"Maybe you should tone down the charm a bit." I said. "I'm not into people who are cocky and try too hard to catch my eye." I said.
"Glad to know." He said and I chuckled. We continued walking and he looked at me. "Do you have your phone or a pen on you?"
"No, why?"
"Because I really want you to have my number. You're cool and not like other girls." He told me and I chuckled.
"How about I give you my number and you call me?" I asked and he told me that'd be perfect. He pulled his phone out and I rolled my eyes. I told him my number after he unlocked it and then he smiled.
"Got it." He said and put his phone away. "Are you free this Friday?" He asked me and I shook my head. I was planning on being with Makenna on Friday.
"Um, Sunday I am."
"Well, would you like to hang out on Sunday? Not like a date, unless you want it to be." He said and I nodded.
"Sure, but it's not a date." I said. "Just text me when and where." I told him and he nodded. I heard Michael and Calum calling my name and I sighed.
"See you Sunday?" He asked me and I nodded. "Bye." I waved at him and then went back to where they were.
"Find any pretty ones?"
"I found a few and then a sand dollar." I said to Michael and said down in front of them. "They're really pretty." I said as I looked at them.
"Prettier than Makenna?"
"Nothing and no one could be more beautiful than that girl." I told Calum and he just chuckled. "Even pictures can't capture how perfect she always looks." I said with a smile.
"When are you deciding date number two?" Calum asked me and I thought about it. "Have you asked her on a date number two?"
"Yeah," I said. "Um, something simple. Netflix, pizza, cuddles, and music." I told him and he chuckled.
"All my loves combined into one date, Michael, why don't you take me on a date like that?" Calum whined to the boy.
"Because we live together and do that even if we aren't together." He told him. "Also um, can you not talk about dating around me? I still feel as if Sophia is way too young to go on dates."
"We'll talk about this later, just me and you." Calum told me and I nodded. "Now, there is wet sand over there and I haven't built a sand castle in... I don't know how long, who's up for it?"
"Me!" I said and set my seashells on the blanket. "I'll go with you Calum." I said and stood up. I took my tank-top off so I don't get it dirty and he chuckled.
"You two go out and do that, I think I'm going to chill here awhile longer." Michael said and I nodded. Me and Calum walked out to the shore line and then sat down.
"How do you make a sand castle?"
"I don't know." I said and scooped up some sand in my hands. "Let's wing it." I said and he nodded.
After about four failed attempts at a sand castle, we decided to give up and make a snowman out of sand.
"Take a picture of me with it." I said and he asked me why. "So I can say I met sandman, duh Calum." I said and he laughed.
He nodded and told me to wait here. I hummed as I began drawing in the sand. When Calum came back, I stopped and looked at the messed up dinosaur.
"What is that?"
"It was supposed to be at dinosaur." I said. "It's looks like a graiffe." I said as I looked at it. "Or a dog with a very long neck..."
"Let's just take the pictures so we can post it on twitter and then bury Michael before he wakes up. He fell asleep." He told me and I nodded. "Pull your top up a bit."
I did as he said and then posed for the picture as he took a few. "There," he said and I chuckled. "Now leave sandman so we can bury Michael."
I nodded and then got up, wiping the sand off of my bottom. I followed him up to Michael and then sat in front of him.
Calum began throwing sand on top of him and I did the same. "He's going to get so mad." I said and he laughed. "What if he bakes under all this hot sand?"
"He's not." Calum said and I nodded. "He may have sand in places there shouldn't be sand in but that's what showers are for." He said and I nodded.
"I have sand in places sand should not be."
"Don't worry, I do too." Calum said and I laughed. "We can go swimming in a bit and it'll like come out a bit I guess." He said and I laughed.
"Sounds good." I told him and then grabbed the sunscreen. "Hold on, I need some of this." I said and then began putting it on. He told me he'd get my back again and I thanked him.
When he finished, he put some on himself, well, I did his back but it was mostly him. "Pull your shorts up Calum, please." I said and he laughed while nodding.
"Fuck, I had basketball practice today." I said and Calum looked at me. "I'll just tell them something came up with my family and I couldn't make it."
"I'm going to call the school and say that a family member had to go to the emergency room so make sure you say that." He said and I nodded.
"Should I feel bad for lying?"
"Nope." He said and I nodded as I laughed. "Everyone lies to the school about why they were absent or late, it's nothing."
"True." I said and chuckled. "Michael's seriously going to get so pissed." I said as we continued throwing sand on him.
"Eh, it's cool. He'll get over it."
"Angry Michael kind of scares me to be honest." I said and then stopped. "I um, you can finish burying him."
"No, what? Come on." Calum whined. "If you're scared he'll hit you again darling, it won't happen. I promise you." He said. "I'll kick his ass and we all know I would."
I looked at Michael and then at Calum. "I'll take full blame for this. Just help me, please." He said and I nodded.
"Remember earlier when we were listening to old school rap?" He asked after awhile and I nodded. "Remember when Michael told me he'd spank me too if I didn't turn that one song off?"
"I wish I didn't."
"What does he mean by 'me too'?" He asked me, looking at me knowingly. "Had he spanked you?"
"I um no?"
"Don't lie for him." He told me and I just looked down. "Has he? I know he laid a hand on you but has he actually spanked you?"
Don't lie for him...
Don't lie to us...
But I can't just tell on Michael when he had every right to... can I?
"Well?"
Sorry Michael.
"Um yeah," I said quietly. "The first time was for talking back and swearing at him because he led you on. The second time was for running off, talking back, and swearing at him."
"So... it was my fault the first time?" He asked. "Oh my god. I'm sorry." He said and I shook my head.
"It's fine." I said and looked at him. "Seriously, I'm over it. It happened a lot before I met you guys so I'm used to it, kind of." I said.
"Can we get off of the topic?" I asked him. "Please." I said and he nodded, telling me we'll talk about this when we get home.
"We're almost finished." Calum said and I looked at Michael. I laughed quietly and then I stopped. "And done." He said, putting a few more handfuls on him.
"Want to go swimming?" I asked Calum an d he nodded. We both stood up and then made our way to the water. "Oh my gosh wait, we need to take a picture of him first." I said and Calum nodded.
We ran back to our spot and Calum grabbed his phone. He turned it on and then I laughed as he took a few pictures of him. "There, now I really need that cold ocean water on me."
I agreed and then we raced each other to the water. We both jumped in and then he laughed as he wiped his face. "Try not getting hit with a ball this time." He told me.
"Try not getting eaten by a shark." I said and he swam closer to the shoreline in panic. "You know, we should come out on a boat sometime and do what they're doing."
"Tubing?"
"Yeah, it looks like fun." I said and Calum agreed. "If one of you know how to drive a boat of course." I said.
"Michael does, he used to go out fishing with his dad." Calum told me and I nodded. "I do too but I'm not all that great at it." He said and I nodded.
"Michael actually used to do stuff outside? What?" I said surprised and he just laughed.
"Shocking." Calum said as he laughed. "Uh oh, Michael's waking up. Um, hide." He said and I looked at Michael, who was moving.
"Swim away!" I shrieked and swam to behind a cliff with Calum. We laughed a bit and then we heard Michael.
"Sophia! Calum!"
"Shh," Calum told me since I as laughing. He covered my mouth and I covered his hand with my own. "You laugh so much."
I flipped him off and he chuckled. "Where are you two?" Michael yelled and Calum snickered.
I used one of my hands to cover his mouth and I looked at him. He rolled his eyes abd we kept our hands on each other's mouths so we were quiet.
I heard a splash and I looked at Calum. "We gotta move." I tried to say but he couldn't hear me. I took his hand off my mouth and then repeated myself quietly.
"Yeah, come on, let's go." He said after he took my hand off his mouth. We swam around that cliff and then went on to land.
We laughed and giggled to ourselves as we ranway from Michael. We went to the top of the cliff, but stayed down as we looked at the water.
Michael was looking for us.
"To our spot, come on." I said and he nodded. We got up carefully and then made our way to the spot.
I pulled a towel around me and then sat down on the towel. "Seriously guys, where are you?" Michael yelled out.
"Behind you!"
"Oh my god, Jesus, was that you?" I heard Michael yell and I laughed. Calum rolled his eyes and I leaned my head on his shoulder.
"He's a fucking idiot." Calum commented and I agreed. "You know that one Eminem song where it's like 'you can suck my dick if you don't my shit'?"
"Yeah, it's called 'Suck My Dick'." I said and he nodded. "Why?" I asked me and he chuckled.
"Michael was singing it last night and it's been stuck in my head." He told me and I nodded with a laugh.
"I'm trying not to laugh because you just asked a fourteen year old if she knew a song with the lyrics 'Suck My Dick'." I said and he rolled his eyes.
"Cause I don't give a fuck if you don't like my shit." I sang loudly and he laughed, telling me to lower my voice if I was going to sing that song.
"Have you ever heard part two of 'Love The Way You Lie'?" He asked me and I nodded quickly.
"I love that song almost as much as I love the first one." I said and he chuckled. "Damn, Michael still hasn't found us?" I asked.
"Nope." He said and I rolled my eyes because Michael sucks. "Wait, there's this one Eminem song where he's like writing a letter to Slim, what's that one called?"
"'Stan'?" I asked and he shrugged. "It's goes like, um," I said as I thought about the lyrics. "Dear Slim, I wrote you but you still ain't callin, I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom, I sent two letters back in Autumn, you must not have got 'em."
"Yeah, that one." He told me and I nodded. "I heard it but never took the time to find the same of the song." He said and I chuckled. "Thanks."
"You're welcome. It's one of my favorite songs from him." I said and chuckled. "Oh look, here comes Michael." I said as he walked up.
"I hate you two." He said as he sat down and grabbed a towel. He wrapped it around himself and I chuckled.
"I love you to dad."
"I love you too Mikey."
