Chapter Eighteen

Sophia's point of view

I walked into the salon with Calum because it seems as if he wasn't kidding about getting my hair dyed. "We're just going to get high lights and streaks and stuff. That's all."

"Okay." I said and he pulled me close. "Dude, Calum, bro, I'm like smashed under your arm pit." I said and he laughed.

"That dude was staring and I didn't like it." He told me and I frowned. "You're too young to be looked at like a piece of meat." He told me and the lady behind the counter smiled at us.

"It's the shirt darling. Whenever someone walks in with a crop-top he stares until his job is threatened. The boss is debating firing him." She told us and Calum nodded.

He told her what he wanted done and she pointed at two open chairs. "I'll get the g-"

"I'll get the girl." The lady told me and smiled. "You handle this young man. He wants his hair trimmed and the blonde streak down the middle redone."

"Thank you." Calum told her and she nodded. She lead me to a chair and I sat down as she raised it. She threw some poncho looking thing over me and I smiled.

"I love your shirt too much to get dye on it." She said and I laughed with a nod. "My daughter has one that looks just like it but it's this blue color." She told me.

"How old is she?" I asked since she looked so happy while talking about her. You could see her eyes sparkle and the smile on her lips.

"She's sixteen." She said as she brushed my hair out. "Your hair is not naturally straight, is it darling?" She asked me and I shook my head.

"It looks much better straight so I straighten it a lot." I confessed and she nodded. "It's a curly mess when it's natural."

"How about this, after I finish the dye, I show you what I could do with your hair so it doesn't look like a mess? It's free." She told me and I looked and her through the mirror. "Think of it as an apology from that guy who kept eyeing you."

"Okay." I said and she smiled as she told me fixing hair was her life. She told me she'd always been into it, even as and little girl she'd fix her barbie's hair all pretty.

"Is there anything you're into?" She asked me as she grabbed some blonde hair dye. "Everyone is into something."

"Um, I enjoy rapping and sometimes I write." I said as I itched my nose. "Nothing I could make a profession out of however."

"Sure you can." She piped up as she dipped a brush into blonde hair dye. "You can be a rapper like Nicki Minaj and you can be a writer like John Green." She told me with a smile.

"I don't think I'm good enough for that just yet." I said with a laughed. She nodded as she brushed the dye on to my hair and then looked at me quickly.

"Maybe not. However, you'll get there if you try. You're still young darling. You have a long life ahead of you." She told me and I nodded slightly. "There will be good and there will be bad, but keep your chin up."

"The smell of hair dye was never very pleasing to me. How about you Sophia?" Calum asked me and I looked at him through the mirror.

"I don't mind it."

-

I had an hour, a fucking hour, to get dressed for my date and panic a bit over the fact it could go terrible. The traffic back home was bad and it didn't help that about thirty girls stopped us when we exited the salon.

Some were really nice to me but other were a bit rude. It's okay though. They were probably having a bad day or something.

When we got home, I immediately turned my straightener on. Sure, the lady did a nice job dying it, but I have an afro. I don't have anything against it, but it makes me uncomfortable. I'm so used it it being straight that I need it straight.

As the straightener heated up, I closed the bedroom door and then stripped down. I quickly pulled on some grey skinny jeans and a black tank-top. I laced on a pair of red converse after putting on some white socks and then sprung to my feet.

I ran to the bathroom and then began straightening my hair. I was killing it, I know, but I didn't care. I needed to look good and I had less than an hour to straighten this mess out.

When I finished, I literally had ten minutes left. I rolled on some deoderant and then sprayed a little bit of the perfume. I ran to my closet and then yanked a red leather jacket off of the hanger after I put a black snapback on.

I put it on and then shoved my phone in my back pocket. I put on my silver watch and then a simple silver necklace with a moon pendant on it. I ran downstairs, almost missing the bottom one, and then Calum smiled at me. "Your hair looks better."

"I know." I breathed out as I tried evening my breath out. "I feel better too. You could see the blonde more." I said and he nodded.

"Come on, let's go get Makenna." Aka, I'll be in the car while you go get your girl.

"Have fun and be safe!" Ashton yelled and I nodded. I left with Calum and then he went to the car as I went to Makenna's door.

"Oh yeah, the flower." Calum told me and ran over. He handed me the rose and I thanked him. This whole thing would have failed if it wasn't for him.

I went up to her door and then knocked on it. This is how you do it right? You knock on the door and have something to give them? Or are you supposed to text them? I don't even know. I saw this all in movies so I assume I'm doing the right thing.

Soon, the door opened and I saw Makenna. She was dressed in a pair of ripped grey shorts and a loose white t-shirt (I think it was mine but whatever). She had on a pair of white converse and a silver locket was around her neck.

"Wow." I gasped and she blushed. "This um I got this for you." I said and handed her the rose.

"Thank you." She said. "You looked really nice. I really like when you wear leather." She told me with a smile as she twirled the red rose in her fingers.

"As do you." I said, noticing this is the first time I ever seen her dressed like this. It was so laid back and so casual. "Are you ready?"

"Let me go put this in a vase first." I nodded and stood here as she went into the house. A few minutes later she walked out and closed the door.

"Come on, Calum is driving us." I said and she grabbed my hand. She entertwined our fingers and I smiled to myself as we walked to the car.

We got in and then buckled up. "You both look beautiful." Calum said and Makenna thanked him. He turned the radio on and then for the rest of the car ride, he was silent.

"I can't believe you actually have clothes like this. I thought you'd have just skirts and all those rather cute and formal clothes." She laughed a hit and then nodded.

"Yeah um, I don't have much, but I have some." She told me. "I thought I'd dress a little more... casual I guess. It's weird, but I like it."

"As long as you're comfortable, I don't care what you wear." I told her and smiled. "I'm sure you'd look amazing in anything." I told her and she blushed.

"Stop being cheesy."

"If I get the chance, I'm going to take it." I said and she shook her head. "I never miss a chance to make you blush. You look adorable while blushing."

"I hate you." She joked and I smiled. "Oh um, if my mum asks, we went to the mall okay?" She said and I nodded.

"We're here. Have fun girls but be careful okay?" He asked and we nodded. "Here." He reached behind him and held out some money.

"Thank you Calum." I said and he just nodded. We got out of the car and then Makenna ran to my side. I grabbed her hand and then laced our fingers together.

"I'll be back at... eight. Call me if anything happens okay?" He asked and I nodded. He rolled his window back up and then drove off.

"Come on." I told Makenna and she nodded. We walked side by side, hand in hand, into the entrance and I paid for us two to get in.

"It's so pretty." She told me in awe. "Mum never let me come here before, probably because she didn't have the time to take me." She said and I smiled smally.

"Come on, let's go on a ride and then we can plan whatever else after." She nodded quickly and then I followed her as she ran. When she stopped, we were at the teacups that spin faster than humanely possible.

"Can we go on these? They always look like so much fun in the movies." She told me and I nodded. We stood in line, and I was grateful it wasn't so long. Even if it was long, I'd still be standing here with her though.

"Aren't you that one girl who was adopted by Michael?" I heard from behind me and I froze. Well that'd just fucking great, people recognize me while I'm trying to spend time with Kenna.

"Just say yes." Makenna told me and I nodded. I turned around and saw a girl who looked about sixteen.

"Yeah," I said and she asked for a picture. I nodded and then we took a few pictures. She thanked me and I nodded. "It's okay."

The line began moving and I ran up to Makenna. "It's sorry," I said and she shrugged with a giggle as we both took one of the cups.

"It's okay, don't worry about it." She told me and grabbed my hand. "The sunset is pretty huh?" She asked me and I nodded. The ride began and I smiled at her.

"Put your arms up." I said and we both raised our arms as it went faster. She laughed loudly and I couldn't help but stare.

She was just so beautiful when she was happy. Her eyes sparkled and we're such a bright blue. And her smile, don't even get me started on her smile. It's just so perfect.

When the ride ended, I didn't even notice until she was tugging me off. I was too lost in my thoughts of her to even comprehend the fact the ride has been over for about a minute.

We walked around a bit and then she squealed. "Look at that teddy bear! It's so cute and big." She said like an excited little girl. It was so cute.

"Let's see if I can go get it for you." I said and she told me if didn't have to. "No, come on. You want it right?" She nodded and I tugged her over to it.

Fuck the rides, I'm winning this girl a bear even if I have to waste all my money on it. "Four darts for a dollar and you need ten balloons popped for a big prize." The man told us with a smile.

I gave him three dollars and he gave me four darts for the first round. "I hope all the times I threw things at Calum were worth it." I said and Makenna laughed.

I threw the first dart and then pouted as it bounced off. I threw a second on and pop goes the yellow balloon. I threw the third one and there goes a blue and red one.

"Would you like and small prize? Or are you going to try for the big one?" He asked as he picked up the four darts.

"I paid for like twelve darts so let's do it." I said and laughed. He nodded and handed me four darts. I threw the four, hitting a balloon each time. "How many is that?"

"Seven." Makenna told me with a smile as she held on told my arm. She rested her head on my arm and I chuckled. Four more darts were placed in front of me and I took a deep breath.

"Fingers crossed." The man told me and I smiled. I threw the first two and missed each time. "You got a two in one before, can you do it again?" He asked and I looked around the board.

There was two pink and green ones pressed against each other. I threw the dart right between the two and then they both popped. I smiled and the man clapped, telling me I had one more dart.

I threw it carefully at one and then ding ding ding, I popped ten balloons. He clapped and I smiled and he showed us the big prizes, or the huge teddy bears. "Pick one." I told Kenna and she pointed to the pink one.

He handed it to me with a smile and I handed it to Makenna. "Have a great day girls." He told us and I returned it before we walked away.

"Thank you Sophia." Makenna said and it looked at her. She held the bear in one hand and then wrapped her arms around me. "You're the best."

"You're welcome." I said and she have me a kiss. I kissed her back and then set a hand on her cheek. "Come on, we still have a few hours." I told her after I pulled away and she nodded.

"Look, a photobooth." She told me and dragged me towards it. I chuckled and she pulled out her own money to use it.

"No, let me." I said but she already put some money on it. "Kenna, I'm supposed to be the one paying. I asked you out, not the other way around.." I told her.

"No you aren't." She told me and then kissed my cheek. "Come on, it's was like five dollars for two strips, it's nothing." She told me and then I smiled smally.

"Fine." I said and then she started the camera. We did multiple poses but the last one was probably my favorite.

The first pose was us just smiling. The next was her wearing my snapback and me kissing her cheek. After that, it was her kissing my cheek. Next it was us kissing each of the cheeks on the pink bear. Finally, we ended it by a picture of us kissing and Makenna lazily trying to cover it as to say 'no pictures please'.

I laughed and then we exited the booth. We too the strip of pictures and the looked at it. "I'm putting this in my wallet." I told her and pulled it out. I put my strip in my wallet and she put hers in there as to well because she did the same.

"Are you hungry?" I asked and she nodded. I took her to a vendor and then she asked for funnel cake. I chuckled and just got some cotton candy because I was not very hungry.

He handed it to us and I paid him while she thanked him. He nodded and we walked away. "After this, we can go to the arcade and stuff because I don't want you getting sick on a ride." I told her and she laughed while nodding.

She leaned her head on my shoulder as we sat at a bench and I checked my watch. "Want to go down to the boardwalk while we eat?" She asked and I nodded.

We stood up again and I followed her. We left the little carnival that's happening and then stepped out to the darkness of the night. The only light was the moon and the carnival that was behind us.

Makenna took a seat by the edge and I just stayed standing up. "It's so pretty." She told me and I agreed, even though we were talking about different things.

"It's cold though." She said and I chuckled. "I would have brought a jacket, but I didn't have one that matched this outfit. You can't really wear a three hundred dollar blazer with this."

"You had my flannel." I said as I shrugged my jacket off. "Here, take my jacket. I'm not cold." I said and she turned to look at me.

"I forgot about your flannel." She said and I chuckled. She stood up and handed me her food before taking the jacket. "It's so warm." She told me and I nodded as I handed her back the cake.

"You know, I think you look really good in leather." I told her and I knew she was blushing. "You look good in general but there's something about you in leather." I said.

"Maybe I'll get my own leather jacket and stuff then." She told me and I chuckled. "And some actual skinny jeans and stuff."

"You don't have to." I told her and grabbed her free hand. "You look great in your dresses and skirts. You don't have to change."

"I know." She told me. "I just want to own more jeans now." She said and I rose an eyebrow at her. "They're comfortable and make me feel less exposed." She told me and I nodded.

"Come on, lets go back to the carnival." I said and she just looked at me for awhile.

"Can we-Can we stay here a little bit longer? It's just you and me and I like that." She told me and I smiled.

"Yeah, yeah we can." I told her and she leaned her head on my shoulder as she wrapped a free arm around my waist.

I chuckled softly and thew an arm over her shoulders. "We sure can." I mumbled again, almost inaudible.
