Chapter 5

(If I had messed up the definitions of the genders/sexualities stated, please be nice about it when you comment it. I got the definitions and examples off of Tumblr and from a friend of mine.)

Collin's point of view

I stood in the mirror, staring at my reflection in confidence. I just felt like I looked good today, even if I did have my glasses on. I don't know what it is.

It's probably just today.

I pulled my tank-top down and then pulled my jeans up some more. I left my room and then closed the door. I walked downstairs and then saw Calum and Luke playing video games.

"Hey Collin, where are you going?" Luke asked as he saw me. He paused the game and I fixed my snapback a bit.

"Um Michael wants my help shopping for some new clothes." I said and he nodded. "I hope that's okay with you..." I trailed off and he chuckled.

"Of course it is." He said and smiled. "Just don't let him get into trouble. He's gotten us kicked out of a store once because he got mad at the cashier for saying that pop-punk is dead."

"I'll keep an eye on him then." I said and he thanked me. He turned to his game again and then unpaused it. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I practically jumped through the roof.

"Woah there," Michael's voice rang. "It's just me. Calm down." He said softly and I nodded. "Are you ready?"

"Yeah." I said and turned around. "Oh." I said as I realized we were dressed exactly the same. "Should I change?"

"Nah, it's cool." He told me and I nodded. "Come on, let's go while it's still school hours. Not many teens and kids will be there now." He said and I nodded and I fixed my bracelets.

"Okay."

-

"Come on buddy." He said and I hesitantly followed him into a practically abandoned clothing store. "No one is here so it's a perfect time."

"Do you think that the-the cashier will think I'm some freak?" I asked, being a bit more open than I normally would be. Most of the time I can't even talk to someone...

"If he does say anything or give you a dirty look, I'll kick his ass Collin." He told me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "If promise. I won't let anyone look at you or treat you as if you're doing something wrong. This isn't wrong."

"Okay." I said quietly and we looked around. "They're so pretty." I said and then sighed as I realized that I couldn't never fill these dresses out enough to look good in them.

"How about we try something basic first Collin? You're still not sure of this, are you?" I shook my head and he looked through a rack of black skirts. "Try this on first before we do a dress."

I took it from him and then nodded. "If it is too big or too small, tell me and I'll grab a different size." He told me as we went to the dressing room.

"Okay." I said softly and then opened the stall door. I looked at myself in the mirror and then began to take my jeans and shoes off.

I pulled the skirt on and then blushed. "Uh, Michael, this is too big." I said because when I moved, it fell.

"How big?"

"A size or two." I answered and he told me he'll grab me a few more. I put the skirt back on the hanger and stood awkwardly in my boxers and tank-top.

I fixed my glasses and then looked at myself. I was never too comfortable showing my legs because you see guys with hairy legs all the time but then there's me. I shave them because the hairs irritate me. It makes them itchy and rough.

"Here." A skirt was hung over the top of the door and I grabbed it. I thanked him and he just hummed.

I pulled it on and it fit just as well as my jeans did. I looked in the mirror and eyed how the skirt looked on me.

I didn't feel weird. I didn't feel strange. I liked having it on. Is that weird? I liked wearing a skirt. It's so... different, but it's a good different. It's definitely a good different.

"Do you like wearing it?" Michael asked and I bit my bottom lip. I unlocked the stall and then opened it just enough to peek my head out.

"Promise you won't laugh or judge if I walk out?"

"I promise Collin."

I slowly walked out and he looked at me. "It's different," I answered and he chuckled. "But-But it's a good different and I kind of like it." I said and walked around.

"Should we buy you some like that then?" He asked me. "I just want you to feel comfortable Collin. If this makes you comfortable and if you like this, then I'll buy a few more and maybe even a dress if you're willing." He answered and I looked down.

"Yeah." I answered and looked at him. "Please?" I asked and he nodded. "Do I change out of it now?" I asked again.

"Yes Collin." He chuckled. "We have to buy it when it's on the hanger buddy, not your body." I nodded and then walked back into the stall.

I took it off and then got dressed again. I put the skirt on its hook and then opened the stall. I handed it to him and we left the dressing rooms.

"Come on, pick a few more colors and then we can try a dress if you want." I nodded and then we looked around the store a bit.

"Red?" He asked me as he held one up. I nodded and he put it over his asked with the red one. "Blue?" He questioned again and I nodded.

"You know," Michael spoke up and I looked at him. "You have legs like Luke. They're so long and skinny." He told me and I chuckled. "You're like, leg twins."

"Our leg already has a twin Michael. That can't be." I told him and looked at a maroon one. I grabbed one and then handed it to Michael. "That's it."

"Just four?" I nodded and he nodded aswell. "Now dress wise, sometime simple and black correct?"

"Yeah." I said and we looked around. "I don't know what this is called, cross-dressing or whatever, but I kind of like it." I said quietly as we passed the front desk. "I always knew I liked them, but I never thought it was this much."

"It all depends on how it makes you feel Collin. If you just like the clothes and wear it because you like too, then yes, that's what it is. If you want to be a girl, no, if that's how you feel you should have been born, as a woman, it's Trans-Woman. Then, there is one called Genderfluid or Genderless. There's so many." He told me as we looked through some black and white dresses.

"What are those? I-I never heard of them."

"Genderfluid is when you're both. When you want to be both a man and woman. So, for example, if one day I want to be a man; to dress, talk, act like one, I'm Michael. If I want to be a woman; to dress, talk, and act like one, I'd want to be called Michelle, if I'm okay with the name and feminine pronouns." He explained and I nodded.

"What's the other one?"

"Genderless is when you don't identify with a gender. When you don't feel like you're any gender or identify with a third gender." He said and I nodded again.

"I don't know. I just know I like wearing girl clothes and sometimes the thought of being a girl passes by. It used too a lot but not as much anymore because I thought it's wrong." I mumbled and he chuckled.

"That's fine, don't worry about it yet. You have your whole life to figure yourself out Collin. Don't try to rush or push yourself. In due time, you'll be sure." He told me and I nodded. "Also, it is not wrong. Not one bit."

"How do you know so much about this?" I asked him as he held up a black dress. "How are you so understanding towards all of this?"

"I may look like a punk, and I may have dropped out of school, but I am well educated on some things." He told me. "This is one of them because I have a friend who needed help figuring himself out too. Turns out, he was trans-woman."

I nodded and he set a hand on my back. "What to go try this on before we leave? I feel like it's more you than those strappy ones." He told me and I nodded.

"Yeah." I answered and then we went to the dressing room once again. "Give me minute or two, those jeans are tighter than my skin."

"I know the struggle. Take as long as you need. We have a lot of time, it's only noon." He told me and I nodded.

I locked the stall and then stripped down. I pulled the dress on but I couldn't reach behind me to zip it. "Michael, can you zip it?"

"Yeag, come out here." He said and I unlocked it. I opened the door and turned around. He zipped the dress up and then looked at me.

"Does it look good?" I asked and looked down. "I feel like it looks good but I don't know." I said as I pulled the sleeves down a bit.

"You look great." He said and turned me. "Hold on." I nodded and he began to mess with my hair. "There, go look in a mirror."

I nodded and then walked back into the cubicle. I looked into the mirror and then blushed because I actually looked okay. I didn't look like a disaster. I looked good, and I felt like I looked good.

"Wow." I gasped and Michael chuckled. "I didn't think I'd be this into dresses. I look-I look good." I said and he laughed.

I opened the door and then did that cupcake pose. "That's so punk rock Collin." He joked and I laughed. "If you parted your hair like right here and combed it over, then out some make up on, you could probably pass as a girl with no tits." He said and I laughed again.

"Thanks." I said and tugged the dress down a bit. "Should I get it?" I asked, the joking feeling in the room dying down. "Do you think the guys will be weirded out if I wear these?"

"I'll kick their ass if they say something bad about it, me and Luke will." I nodded and he looked at me. "If you want it, and you like it, I'll buy it for you. Maybe a white and red one too. For some reason, you pull off those colors really nicely."

"Of course I do," I joked and he laughed. "But yeah, can we get them? Please?" I asked and he nodded.

"You wish is my command Collin." He said and patted my back, undoing the zipper for me. "Change out of it while I pick up the last two dresses, then we can pay for them."

I nodded and then went back into that dressing room for the millionth time today. I changed back into my original outfit and then put the dress back on to the hanger.

I left the cubicle and then went up to Michael, ignoring the stare the cashier was giving me. "Here, are you ready?" He asked me as he set two dresses on his arms.

"Yeah." I said and he nodded. We went to the counter and then Michael set the items on the counter.

"Are these for... the young man?" He asked questionably as he scanned the items. "I'm sorry, I didn't know what you'd prefer to be called."

"It's fine." I said and he nodded. I looked at Michael and he pulled his wallet out. "But um, no?" I said and he chuckled as he typed into the keypad cash register.

"It's fine if it is sweetie." He said and Michael chuckled. "Dress however your heart desires. Life is only so long you know? Why waste it?" He said and I nodded as he bagged the items.

Michael handed the man his credit card and then I thanked him. "It's fine. If you ever want to come back, feel free. There is no shaming in this store." He told us and handed Michael a receipt. "Have a nice day."

"You too." Michael said and we walked out of the store. "Well, now I know where to take you shopping you ever want some more dresses and skirts." He said and I nodded.

I took a deep breath and then hugged Michael, shocking the both of us. I didn't touch them if I didn't need to. I never shook their hand and laid a finger on them and when they did to me, I always jumped and flinched.

This-This was new.

"Thank you Michael." I said and he rubbed my back. "You have no idea how much this means to me." I said and he laughed a bit.

"It's totally fine Collin, you're welcome." He said and I pulled away. "Now, care to help me find some more clothes?"

"Let's do this."
