chapter thirty-nine
Vanessa's point of view
"I'm tired." I told Alejandra as I pulled my phone out of my cardigan's pocket. "It starts in ten minutes, where's Keath and Riley?" I asked and she said they were on their way.
I nodded and then spotted a familiar face not too far away. She messed with a guitar on her lap and she was talking to one of the adults that ran the show.
"Isn't that Miranda?" Alejandra asked and I nodded. "I don't see you guys hanging out anymore, what's up?" She asked and I shook my head.
"Nothing." I said and then pulled my phone out again. I went on Twitter and saw Calum tweet something about hard times getting better.
I smiled at the positive comments on my timeline and retweeted a few I thought were great and made me laugh. I favourited some of Bryana and Arzaylea's recent tweets and then read a memo that someone wrote about me and only me.
I mean, if someone write a memo/message all about you, wouldn't you read it?
I read through it and smiled smally at it. I favorited it when I finished since it was so cute and then I tweeted her a couple heart emojis.
It's always great to appreciate people who like you and decide not to call you a skank.
"Sorry we're late, we got caught up in traffic." Riley spoke and Alejandra nodded. "I had to pick up his younger brother from soccer practice."
"Francisco? Is he here?" Alejandra asked and my eyes widened as a familiar boy walked over, wiping his hands on his black jeans.
"Hey guys, Vanessa, nice to see you again." He said and I gave him a nod. He sat beside me and I looked down at my crossed legs at the curtain was drawn, revealing the creative writing teacher.
"Hello students, teachers, parents, welcome to our annual open mic night, where our very own students come up to perform originals. Please help encourage them to further in their talents." She said and I put my phone away.
I watched the first few people, a rapper, two poets. They weren't bad, actually, they were kind of good.
"Hey look, it's Miranda." Francisco said as he pointed to the girl. She set a stool down on the stage and then took a seat as she adjusted the microphone.
"I um, hello. My name is Miranda and this is an original song that I've written for someone very important to me." She said and I smiled smally as she cleared her throat.
"When I see your smile, tears run down my face," she sang softly into the microphone, playing her guitar as she did so. "I can't replace..."
"She a great singer isn't she?" Francisco asked after a bit and I nodded as he looked at me. "Are you crying?"
"It's kind of sad, don't you think?" I asked quietly and he nodded, agreeing with me.
"I will never let you fall, I'll stand up with you forever, I'll be there for you through it all, even if saving you sends me to heaven... it's okay." Her eyes were closed as she sang, only opening to look at her guitar.
"Seasons are changing and waves are crashing and stars are falling all for us, days grow longer and nights grow shorter, I can show you I'll be the one." Her voice was still soft, like the time she called me and sang A Day To Remember to me.
Her eyes locked with mine and her's were glossy, and when she turned away, looking down as she continued her song, I couldn't help but feel guilty.
I didn't have a reason to be guilty... right?
"Please don't throw that away cause I'm here for you, please don't walk away, and please tell me you'll stay," her voice grew louder and so did her guitar as she pulled away from the mic a bit.
"Use me as you will, pull my strings just for a thrill, and I know I'll be okay, though my skies are turning grey," she sang loudly and I looked down, sniffling quietly because I was just too emotional and I honestly missed talking to her.
"I will never let you go, I'll stand up with you forever, I'll be there for you through it all, even if saving you sends me to heaven." She finished, her guitar ringing out as people clapped for her.
"Thank you." She said, her voice cracking. She widened her eyes and then got off stage quickly, taking the stool with her.
"I'll be right back." I said and Francisco was the only one who said that he'd see me later. The rest were too engrossed in their phones.
I ran backstage, sneaking past teacher talking to one another about Miranda's song, and I looked around, hoping to find the black and blue haired girl.
I looked around and found her sitting on a chair, holding the guitar by the neck as she cried quietly. "Are you okay-"
She looked up immediately and I nearly winced because of her tear filled and red eyes. "What do you want?" She asked and I pulled a random chair out, sitting down in front of her.
"That was a great performance." I told her and she thanked me quietly. "Are you okay?" I repeated and she shrugged, giving me the cold shoulder.
"Why does it matter to you?"
"I'm sorry I'm trying to be nice to a friend-"
"A friend? I texted you, I called you, I tried to talk to you, but each time you ignored me." She said and I looked down. "You ignored me Vanessa and that hurt okay. I'm sorry for whatever I did, but the least you could have done is talk to me about it."
"For whatever you did? You posted that picture of me and Calum kissing at your quinceañera, don't pretend like you didn't know." I said loudly and she grabbed my arm, telling me to shut the fuck up as she dragged me outside so we didn't interrupt the performers.
"Someone hacked into my phone okay? I didn't get it back until that one time I tried texting you but you deleted my number." She told me.
"Bullshit it came off of your twitter!" I said and she nearly threw her guitar. "Everyone found out because of that picture! We're all the fandom talks about right now!"
"I didn't post shit Vanessa. The last thing I posted was a picture on Instagram, I haven't been on Twitter in forever." She told me. "I don't even have the picture anymore. You can go through my gallery, I deleted it awhile ago."
"You were the only one that took the picture Miranda, who the hell else could have posted it?" I asked her and she shrugged.
"I don't fucking know Vanessa, maybe the person who hacked my damn phone? Did you hear a word I said?" She asked and I groaned. "You know what, I'm done. Go hang out with your other 'best friend', even though she's only using you to meet the band."
"Of course she is." I said and she looked at me. "I know she is, you think I don't know that? Miranda, I'm not fucking stupid okay, I now she's using me."
"Then why the hell are you still friends with her?" She asked me. "You make no fucking sense Vanessa."
"Because if I wasn't, I would have done some fucked up shit again okay? I missed you and needed a distraction to not go back and talk to you." I told her and no she rolled her eyes.
"Yeah well your plane failed because here we are you dipshit." She said and chuckled. "What do to mean by 'fucked up shit again'? What did you do?"
"I rolled a blunt at midnight, smoked it down, Calum found me, smoked what was left, and shit went down from what I remember waking up to." I said and her eyes widened.
"You guys had sex while you were high? You fucking dumbass, he can go to jail!"
"Then keep your voice down you asshat." I said and she nodded. "I don't know what happened okay-How did we even get on the topic of me and Calum?" I asked and she blinked a few times.
"I-I don't know, but I'm glad we are because he could get in serious trouble. You can't tell anyone about this." She told me and I nodded.
"I haven't told anyone... besides you right now. We don't even know what happened, I just woke up with like five hickey and he had one. It was oddly satisfying to see it on him." I said and she rolled her eyes.
"At this rate, you'll be seventeen and pregnant." She said and I rolled my eyes. "Are we um, Are we cool man? We just let out all our anger... right?" She asked and I sighed.
"You didn't post it? Promise?"
"Dead ass." She said and I nodded. We did the 'bro hug' and she smiled. "Glad to have you back dude."
"You too."
"Now, on to important matters... Francisco was sitting beside you. How good did he look up close?" She said and a throat cleared. "Oh no." She squeaked.
"Hi Cisco." I said and smiled as he walked out. "What are you doing out here?" I asked and he shrugged as he stuffed his hands in the pockets of his purple Jack Skellington hoodie.
"Came to see where you two were because my brother and the couple are no fun." He said and I nodded. "You did good MiMi." He said and I rose an eyebrow at her.
"Thank you." She said and I looked between them too. My phone rang, Hit Me Baby One Me Time by Britney Spears played and I blushed. "Really?"
"Michael man, this is his song." I said and they laughed as I answered. "Hello?"
"So, long story short, Calum may or may not have accidentally sent you a picture of his ass." He told me.
"It's not like I haven't seen it Michael, you know that right? He's quite known for his nudity." I said and he laughed.
"He's drunk right now, don't text him anything stupid or scold him." He told me and I walked away from the two a bit.
"Why is he drunk?" I asked, wondering why I was suddenly so worried. "Why is he always drunk-Why are you guys in general always drunk?"
"We write best when we're drunk because then we never hold anything back, masculinity, fame, and fortune isn't on our minds. Plus, it's fun." He said and I rolled my eyes as he laughed.
"Take care of him Mikey, would you?" I asked and he agreed. "Also, I know it's a lot, but could you pick me up soon too?"
"Yeah, I'll put Cal to sleep an-God dammit Calum, get my boxers off of your head and take the towel off from around your shoulders. You can't fly!" He yelled and there was an loud thump. "God fucking help me."
"Can I talk to Calum?" I asked and he said I could. I waited a bit and then I heard Calum's slurred voice. "Cal?"
"Yeah?"
"You can't fucking fly, don't hurt yourself. Those boxers on your head have herpes and go put on some damn pants." I told him.
"Why do I need pants?" He whined and I rubbed my forehead a bit. "I don't want pants."
"I'll cook you breakfast if you put pants on and go to sleep." I said and it was quiet for a second.
"Hello?" Michael asked. "Goodnight Calum?" He said and a door closed. "What did you do?"
"Nothing important." I said and he chuckled. "Andy is making out with a boy, can you pick me up now Mikey?"
"Yeah, be there in a second. Bye Nessa." He said and I returned it. He hung up and I put my camera on.
I took a picture of them, my flash going off, and they jumped apart, much like Cal and I did when she did this to us. "Deja vu." She laughed and I agreed. "Send it to us." She told me and I told her I would because it was a very cute picture.
