chapter seven

Vanessa's point of view

I mumbled lyrics quietly as I played Calum's bass, a pair of headphones on so that I was the only one that could hear it. I didn't want to wake anyone else up because I couldn't sleep.

I took the headphones off of one ear and then glanced at the neck of the bass, moving my fingers quickly to the beat of American Idiot by Green Day. I hummed and then nodded my head to the song.

I heard thumps and I took the headphones off, listening quietly. "Fuck." Someone groaned and I immediately put the headphones back on, not liking what I was hearing.

I blushed and then shook my head, trying not to think about it. It didn't take long until I was playing I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith, who so happened to have been friends with my dad.

Steven and him were like best friends, it's sad I don't see him anymore.

I wonder if I could somehow find a way to talk to him and get the band to meet him. I'm sure that'd be one hell of a plot twist.

'You're the famous ones but here, meet Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, he was like an uncle to me. I don't think you've met him yet so yeah, love you.'

I sighed as I realized I had no way of contacting him, but then I remembered, after like five minutes, that he gave me his phone number. Not his work phones, his actual phone number, that I had only used a couple times.

Please tell me you didn't change your number Mr. Tyler. I know it's been awhile but please.

-

"What's got you all happy?" Luke asked as I put my phone away. "I know you don't got a boyfriend."

"Not really, I just found the next song I'm going to learn on bass." I said and he hummed, asking me what it was. "For Whom The Bell Tolls-"

"-by Metallica?" He asked, nearly spitting his water out. "Don't you think that's a little advanced?" He asked and I shrugged.

"I can do it if I set my mind to it." I told him and he nodded. "I have a question."

"Yes?"

"Do I have to go to school tom-"

"Yes." He answered, cutting me off. I sighed and leaned back, my hair falling in my face. "Have you eaten breakfast yet?" He asked, sitting down at the table with a bowl of cereal.

"Yeah."

"What did you eat?" He asked before spooning some of the cereal into his mouth. I chuckled and sat up a bit.

"I ate granola with yogurt, bananas, strawberries, with honey drizzled on the top." I said and he nodded. "I also had orange juice."

"You washed your dishes?" He asked and I nodded. "No wonder why I didn't see any. Okay then, just making sure."

"I can't stand things that are messy, it's not that I'm a 'neat freak', but when something is messy it just irritates me." I said and he chuckled as he nodded.

It went quiet and then my phone rang, lighting up with the name 'Tyler'. "Who's that?" He asked and I grabbed my phone, holding my index finger up. "Did you just give me the finger?"

"Hello?" I asked and it was silent for awhile, making my chest ache slightly. What if he didn't remember me, or what if this was the wrong number?

"Nessa?"

"Yeah..." I said and smiled, wondering how his voice had stayed the same. "Uncle Steve?" I asked quietly.

"Why haven't you called me? I missed you!" He said and I pulled my knees up to my chest. "How are you dear?"

"I'm good." I said and laughed a bit. "How are you?" I asked, glancing up at Luke. I held my finger up again and then went to a different room since I couldn't let him hear this.

"Great, I'm great! Have you gotten out of that stinkin' place yet?" He asked me and I nodded to myself.

"I did." I said and he asked who it was that adopted me. "The lead singer from 5 Seconds of Summer, Luke Hemmings and his girlfriend." I told him.

"Googling him right now." He said and I laughed. "Oh my god, there's pictures online of you guys. He's looks young?"

"He's like nineteen, twenty," I said and he was silent. "Yeah... anyways um, are you, in any chance, in LA?"

"I will be in a few months," he told me and I smiled. "Why, miss me that much?"

"Yes." I said and bit on my thumb. "I really do actually."

"I'm surprised paps haven't caught you yet. Remember how big it was when they died?" He asked and I sighed.

"Yeah, so many people came in for me, none of which I went home with. It took two years for it all to go down, then another year of rejection, before someone actually looked at me and though hey, she seems cool." I told him and he laughed.

"Where are you in LA? I'll drop a visit when I'm there, if it's okay with... Luke?" He said and I nodded.

"Yeah, Luke. He's a fan so I'm sure it'll be okay." I said and he laughed. I told him the address and he said he had it down. "I gotta go, talk to you later?"

"Definitely. Bye Vanessa." He said and I hung up. I smiled, glad I had my uncle Steven back, and then I put my phone away.

I went back into the living room and Luke looked at me. "So, ready to tell me who that was?" He asked me and I nodded.

"An Internet friend of mine, we've been FaceTiming and messaging on kik forever. I didn't want her to hear you because she'd fangirl and tell everyone and then it'd be out for sure." I said and he nodded.

"What's her name?"

"Stephanie." I answered and he nodded again. "Is Arzaylea awake?" I asked and he nodded.

"She's at work, took some extra hours so she could get more vacation time when the band goes back on tour." He told me and I nodded.

"Want to listen to some Aerosmith?" I asked with a smile and he nodded. I turned my phone back on and then went to my music, the song Cryin' playing loudly.

"There was a time, when I was so broken hearted, love wasn't much of a friend of mine," we sang and Luke drummed on the table. "The tables have turned-"

"Urgh, who is it?" Luke asked and I stood up, going to the door. I looked through the peephole and as soon as I saw curly hair under a fedora, I opened the door.

"Hi guys." I said, seeing the three at the door. I opened the door wider for them and Michael closed it behind him, locking it.

"You were listening to Aerosmith without us?" Ashton cried and I ran as Calum tackled me, embracing me in a hug and tickling my sides.

"How dare you listen to them without us?" He asked and I laughed loudly.

"She also played tour bass." Luke said and I squealed as he picked me up.

"Put me down, I'm heavy!" I said and he laughed. "I'm like, a hundred and sixty pounds." I told him honestly.

"Good thing we bench press two." Ashton said and Calum laughed. "Did you learn a new song?" He asked me and I shook my head.

"Just practiced." I said and he nodded as Calum set me down. "I want to learn a Metallica song... Maybe another Aerosmith song."

"Yes!" Ashton cheered. "Calum refuses to learn Aerosmith songs, even if I beg him."

"I don't do it because you beg me." Calum said and Ashton rolled his eyes as Michael and Luke laughed.

"Can I have a hug? You haven't even talked to me all day." Michael pouted and I gave him a hug.

"I'm right here, don't forget that. I'll throw my bowl at you if something happens." Luke warned and I laughed. "That's enough now."

"Stop being such a dad Luke, chill out. You can trust us." Ashton said and he rolled his eyes. "Arz is at work?"

"Yeah." Luke said and nodded. "Boss wants to meet with me later, do you mind guys?" Luke asked and they shook their heads.

"Nah." Calum said and I smiled. "You do your thing Mr. Lead Singer, we'll be fine."

-

"God dammit Michael, how did you get your finger stuck in there anyways?" Ashton asked as he tried to help Michael pull his finger out of a hole in the wall behind a door.

"Where is your shirt Calum?" I asked as he ran around shirtless, a pair of jeans on only with some briefs. "This is a wreck." I said and they agreed with me.

"Turn the music down." Ashton said and I turned the stereo down.

"These wings are made to fly," Michael sang, wiggling his hips on Ashton. "And we don't let nobody bring us down-"

"Can you stop Michael?" Ashton asked and Luke sent me a text, asking how everything was going.

I looked around, examining the place. Calum was dancing around shirtless with a beer bottle on his hands, Michael's finger was stuck in a hole, Ashton couldn't get the idiot's finger out, and Little Mix was on the stereo.

Other than that, nothing was broken or messed up so it's fine.

I told him everything was going great and he sent me a smiling emoji, telling me he's glad that the guys were actually being useful. I chuckled and then put my phone in my hoodie's pocket.

"Fuck, there you go." Ashton said and Michael wiggled his finger. "You're good. Calum, go put a shirt on, Jesus Christ. Give me this bottle, how many have you had?"

"Two." I answered as I played some video games on my phone. "He had two bottles, that's his third."

"You are out of control Calum, sit down." Ashton said and Calum sat down. Ashton grabbed Calum's shirt from the floor and then threw it at him. "Put it on, now Calum."

"No."

"Put the damn shirt on Cal!"

"No!"

"Calum," I asked as I tapped his shoulder and he looked at me. I popped my bottom lip out and then widened my eyes. "Put the shirt on?" I asked and he huffed.

"Only because puppy," he said and tapped my cheek a few times before putting the blue MAINE shirt on. I thanked him and he nodded before yawning. "I'm tired."

"You're always tired." Michael said and I agreed. "You're always tired too."

"That is actually true." I said and laughed. He nodded and I leaned back, my head on Calum's shoulder. "I'm going to nap."

"Same." Calum said and I laughed as he leaned his head on mine. "Night guys."

"It's three pm though?"

"I said good night!"
